[OSM-talk] Keep Mapnik relevant
I notice that abandoned railways are now being rendered on Mapnik. I'm not sure that this is a good idea. Fairly near to me there are a few abandoned railway that have been made into footpaths or cycle paths and they are tagged as such and render as such. There are also a few abandoned railways that have gently melted into the landscape, with no feature left visible on the ground, yet these are displaying on the Mapnik render. I think these would be better preserved on a dedicated railway map and leave Mapnik for things that can be seen on the ground today. Mapnik is one of the principal views of our work to the public - I'd like to keep it relevant to that. If these are only rendered on a railway map (not Mapnik) then any conflict can be resolved on that map to its maintainers' satisfaction. The abandoned lines that are now reused in my area are currently not tagged as railway=abandoned just as the wiki suggests. [OSM-talk] Trunk and primary routes in the UK
Hi I seem to have stirred up a bit of a hornet's nest by raising this issue - for which I apologise. The key issue - I have now learnt from this mailing list - seems to be the difference in the UK between the primary route network (green signs, conventionally tagged in OSM as highway=trunk) and primary routes (all A roads - green or white signs; green ones tagged highway=trunk, white ones tagged highway=primary). I respect the established convention and will not make any further changes (I assume all A roads in the UK have been done by now?). AFAIK I have corrected back to the established convention the very few changes that I have made. On the assumption (:) that I am not entirely unintelligent, I do still find the instruction on the main map features page of the osm wiki very confusing - that is what started this thread for me. Perhaps you, or someone else long-established in the world of OSM, could consider editing the wiki to make it clearer? Re: [OSM-talk] Trunk and primary routes in the UK
Tom I thought that I had backed off and cleared things up - sorry! Unfortunately your message - for me at least - adds further to the confusion. Surely in the UK primary roads (and trunk roads of course) are A roads and A roads are primary roads - whether or not they are part of the primary route network (as indicated by street sign colour). OSM has chosen to define its tagging and rendering according to the primary route network (and street sign colour) and I am no longer questioning this and have already apologised and corrected back the few changes I had made. BUT ... A roads with white signs are surely still primary roads (and should be tagged as such)? To call an A road a secondary road adds enormously to the potential confusion as the term secondary is surely reserved in legal, common and OSM parlance for B roads? Please understand that having raised the issue as a question, having received a firm response from the old hands and having willingly accepted this advice as to how best to tag, my only concern is that I do still find the entry on the wiki main page extremely confusing. It certainly wouldn't help - IMHO - to start using a term secondary A roads - a real contradiction in terms. I can live with OSM using trunk to mean an A road with green signs that is part of the primary road network and using primary to mean any other A road (i.e. those with white signs and not forming part of the primary road network) and have willingly accepted this as part of my learning. I do think, however, that to start talking about secondary A roads is a real recipe for disaster and endless confusion. Can we not simply live with the terms primary and trunk as presently defined in OSM and reserve the expression secondary for B roads - AFAIK this is what is actually happening on OSM and is consistent with all of the mapping and rendering done so far? I'm never one to be satisfied with the way things are, and hence hold back. The sooner everything that's in Yahoo imagery is mapped, the sooner we can put that behind us and move to the next step (focusing on rural data perhaps? - not that is has to be done separately:P). there is a guy in Germany who has been tracing a lot of Indian cities - although I am a bit ambivalent about the results. Sure, the roads *are* being traced, but without names and also with guesses as to the road type. I sometimes wonder whether it is easier to delete and remap this than to correct what is done. I feel it is better to stick to mapping rivers, lakes and other features than to map roads without being familiar with the area. I am a guy in Germany who mapped some cities in *Iran* (Mashhad [1], some major streets of Bandar Abbas + complete island of Hormuz [2], major streets in Shiraz [3]). I had the help of some locals who supplied some names for places and streets. I guessed the initial street categories from the satellite imagery which worked quite well. Mapping the road network layout even without categories and names takes about 70% of the work of capturing the streets in my opinion as adding names, categories and restrictions is lot less time-intensive once you have the ways already. Re: [OSM-talk] Where have all the contributors gone?
Anyway, I find mapping footpaths in forests much more interesting than plain old residential streets and roads This really depends on where you live. If you live in a major city then you don't have much option but to map residential streets. Otherwise it's a special trip out to the countryside. Not something you can easily do in a lunch hour or after work. No no, in cities you can still map all the public 'footpath' alleyways between houses. One place took me quite a while to do, just because I needed several trips to avoid confusion of my GPS traces (knowing what was road, cyclepath, footpath, bad signal). http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=51.42659lon=-0.3824zoom=16layers=B000FTF -- Gregory nomoregra...@gmail.com http://www.livingwithdragons.com ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk
[OSM-talk] JOSM Audio Mapping - Technical Issues
I got a new olympus digital voice recorder for Christmas, which means I have to use http://code.google.com/p/odvr/ to download the recordings to my linux/ubuntu computer. Unfortunatly when downloading the wav files the recorded date gets lost, but a table of the times can be displayed on the command prompt. How does JOSM Audio get the date/time of the wav files? I tried changing the linux files atime and mtime (last accessed/modified time), but the location marker for the audio does not change. Is it using the ctime (created time)? I can not change the ctime and it gets set to the time the files were downloaded off the voice recorder. I have filled an issue with the odvr downloader, but I want to confirm that it is the ctime that needs to be right for JOSM. I was recording ~2sec comments as I passed a location, so I have a trip with 60 recordings waiting to be mapped. My final idea is maybe I could make a JOSM plugin (now I've learnt some Java) that takes a fixed-width txt table of time stamps and names, and match the times to an open gpx file to create waypoints. This would mean I have to open audio files outside of josm, but at least I would know where they were recorded. Such a plugin may help people with other media problems, ao I wonder has something along those lines already been done? I've been told audio mapping is more amazing than photo mapping, and it would be ideal cycling in these cold winter months. Sadly it's not going to well yet, so I hope to get this sorted. No you must have misunderstood me - ... Glad we agree that secondary is a term best kept to refer to B roads, not A roads. For the rest I have conceded that my original proposal is outwith the consensus and withdrawn it. The confusion that has arisen over what I thought was an innocent suggestion does, however, still suggest to me that the map features wiki page could be clearer. I suspect it is a case that the long-established team knows what they mean by the words chosen but a relative newcomer to the wording finds it less clear, not knowing the history. As I am - hopefully - not the only newcomer to OSM perhaps a change to the wiki could still be considered - without attempting to change the working practice. -Original Message- From: Tom Hughes [mailto:t...@compton.nu] Sent: 01 January 2009 16:03 To: Mike Harris Cc: talk@openstreetmap.org Subject: Re: [OSM-talk] Trunk and primary routes in the UK Mike Harris wrote: I thought that I had backed off and cleared things up - sorry! The prettiest, first-impression, public-facing view should only contain active services and amenities, ditto rail lines, roads, canals etc. because the average user will only care about what's relevant and useful right now. [OSM-talk] Syntactic conventions for tags
People often ask what the various colons, underscores, semicolons and whatnot mean within a tag. The answer is that there are no guidelines, silly; just do what you want! Before I request to change this link, I like to here from native English speakers what's the most common word for a map legend in English. We should all know what 'map legend' means, however I have the feeling 'map key' is becoming me common and causing people to be less familiar with what a legend is. If it is helpful to some viewers of OpenStreetMap then I would go with legend, it shouldn't hurt that much. I had forgotten the link was there. The links next to it make you think it would take you to another page than open something up in front of the map. Though I don't have a suggestion for where the legend link could go.
Hallo, Würdest du also statt einfach footway=left lieber immer explizit footway=left:track schreiben wollen? Allerdings könnte man dann auch so Scherze machen wie: both:cycleway=track left:cycleway=lane right:cycleway=track right:footway=track Was bedeutet das dann?
