Re: [OSM-talk-be] New project
First of all: Thanks for all the quick answers! I can probably have the street names (even segments of the street) available in the correct order along with the traces. Maybe we can setup some way of working with all the data in a more organised way in the future. I will start doing some tests myself and will come back to this issue. Another question: What kind of GPS device is best? It has to be accurate, has to be able to hold quite a lot of data and it has te be easy to use (less buttons = better). I ask this question because the review page on the wiki is not really user friendly. I have done some mapping and testing with a mio device but it doesn't seem very accurate. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/GPS_Reviews Maybe one of these? http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/GPS_Devices_OSM_Netherlands Regards, Ben On Thu, Mar 11, 2010 at 7:15 PM, Ben Laenen benlae...@gmail.com wrote: Ben Abelshausen wrote: - How is the map evolving (specifically in the area of flanders). Some cities like Antwerp are almost complete, but if you look to neighbouring municipalities it's not difficult to find missing streets. And then there are areas where coverage is very basic. It all depends on where the mappers are of course, and since cities have more inhabitants, chances of finding them there are bigger... Putting a number on the mappers is very difficult. - Is it usefull to upload just the gps traces and can we then count on the OSM-community to name the streets etc...? Do you have the street names yourself when you make the traces available? If not, it'll probably sit in the database until a mapper visits the place himself, and if those places are remote, it can take a long time. If you do have the street names something may have to be set up which would just allow mappers to go through the database and add the data to OSM in a more systematic way. - Is it ok to just start using the data? Almost all software will be custom developed. Yes sure, that's why this project is there: make map data available that anyone can use without (almost) any strings attached. I can imagine that people dont want to force a global model on everyone, and I agree. the current situation of tags being informally defined, partially checked by various tools and partially supported by many is also not very good. I'm going to have to wade though the mire here and add my opinion. Why do you argue that the situation of tags being informally defined, partially checked by various tools and partially supported by many is also not very good. Since the project began I've seen lots of people argue that it just won't work because there is no formal structure, especially for tags, those of us on the other side of the fence argue that's exactly why its been successful. We have built one of the richest geographical data resources available to man and we have done it in a very short time and without any real training whatsoever. So I disagree that the method of freeform tagging is not very good and on the contrary it's actually more than surprisingly good. if we had at least a set of standardized rules that we could easily apply to any section of the map, that would be usable from all programs, in libs and other tools, they we would move in the right direction. But the dilemma of this is that by standardising the tags we increase the complexity of contribution and its contribution of data that matters wholly and singularly to us. Once we have a complete data set then those with a need for a standardised tag system can add those tags that fit strict rules and in fact there is nothing to stop anyone adding this now, they are just additional tags and another way to view the world. I can imagine that It would not be difficult to get started with this, there are efforts already to create rdf representations of the OSM data : Indeed it's actually very easy to come up with standards and many already exist. Just look at GML as one example. But how are you going to train the world of citizen cartographers to use a standard like that, it just can't work. We already have a degree of standardised use via the Map Features type presets used in the various editors, this enables those wanting to add the basics to the dataset to do so without having to think about it. In future tools can be set up to do more of this to remove the need for contributors to think about tags at all, but that in my view is dangerous for two reasons, firstly it reduces the potential of individuals adding data that is of use just because no preset exists and secondly it stops contributors thinking about the meta data at all, its because the contributors have had to think logically about the tags and apply something useful and meaningful that has got us to where we are today, which is, I would argue, the best map in the world. Cheers Andy http://linkedgeodata.org/About The current ontology is very simple, and contains nothing more than subclass rules. http://linkedgeodata.org/vocabulary/ Lets look at what rules are important : 1. Subclassing, a B they say: a bar is an amenity. http://linkedgeodata.org/vocabulary#bar http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf- schema#subClassOf http://linkedgeodata.org/vocabulary#amenity . 2. SubProperties, a name is a label http://linkedgeodata.org/vocabulary#name http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf- schema#subPropertyOf http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf-schema#label . 3. They have introduced some other things like usagecounts and value counts, that is what the the tagwatch should provide. So, interesting things that are missing are domain and range. Domain : You can say for example that this node is a gas stations and it has a toilet for wheelchairs. The property of wheelchair_access for example, would be an attribute of bathroom which is part of a public place, and a gas station is a public place. Or you can use ranges : Forest is the range of natural and a forest has lots of tree object. Other things would be more advanced, like this disaster area uses these tags for tagging this and that. Or this sat image is a subset of that image. We at least could define for example that a certain ontology file is used to validate this region of the map, you could define them individually. Also there is no one forcing validity of the documents, I am talking about a simple plugin system that would allow you to start, coupled with a way to formalize the wiki. The task of validating, modelling and using this data is still up to your user decision. I don't see anything more than a better, more customizable josm-validator plugin. In fact, it would be great to see this validator plugin be usable

Exactly - I'm just at the point where I need a high quality hiking / biking map in a relatively small region in the US. Maybe http://hikebikemap.de works for you? I like it as a start; the colors of the main roads are muted which is good. And I like the map legend which is necessary for visitors to understand the map. There are some other items on my wishlist: A regional view should highlight regional hike/bike routes.I like the dashed footway renderings within a park or between buildings, but the dashes are lost in the surrounding features for a regional 'greenways trail' for example. One way to do this is for any route relation=bicycle/foot/hiking , render in an 'important color'. Optionally, use the colour= tag of the route relation. Route planning - choose start / end or manually set waypoints to create a GPX track that can be downloaded to a navigator. This would include auto or public transport routing. A complete Garmin map download - I could probable rig this up myself with the Mkgmap toolchain. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

And use the gnash runtime. I think it is a good idea to generate gnash-compatible Flash apps, for example to support whatever embedded system/ smartphone with a powerful OS. Agreed. I use gnash on all my machines nowadays, and while I can't say that it works for everything, it does work well enough that even my wife didn't ask me to (re)install Adobe's version. Note that there are also non-embeeded systems and non-smartphones on which Adobe's Flash is not available (non-x86 systems running GNU/Linux, like PowerPC macs, some netbooks and nettops, ...) The rumor said that when gnash-0.8.4 came out (or was it 0.8.6?), someone had Potlatch working with it. But I never managed to make it work. Currently, when I click the edit tab, Potlatch comes ou with some icons at the bottom, a pen cursor thingy, and the middle of screen gives me a macosx-style hourclock saying Please wait - loading presets and the hourclock keeps spinning eternally. Gnash seems not to be very active, but it is quite feature-complete. I'm pretty sure that Potlatch can be made to work on Gnash, if only the Gnash and Potlatch people got together and took it as an important goal. As it stands, Potlatch developpers do not seem very motivated and prefer to tie their hands a bit tighter with more proprietary technology, sadly. Jawel.
Hallo Dimitri, Mein Favorit wäre scuba_diving:name=Blue hole. Warum also scuba_diving:name=*? [Talk-de] Tiles in 3D-Perspektive angucken

[Talk-ca] Vancouver adds shoreline and building footprints to Open Data Catalogue
First, something I just saw today: http://data.vancouver.ca/index.htm#v5 The City has just added three new layers to the Open Data catalogue in response to requests. They are Shorelines, Building Footprints, and Web Cams. The shoreline data is from 2002 while the building footprints are from 1999. They have been requested for comparative purposes; clearly there have been many changes in downtown building footprints since 1999 so these do not reflect the current reality. And secondly, a big thanks to Sam Vekemans for helping a newbie (me) get up and running. After I had surfed a lot of wiki pages, Sam answered all my remaining questions and also hooked me up with that Toporama WMS layer for JOSM, which came in very handy when I wanted to add a missing lake south of Penticton.

Does waze have open-source elements? Yes. Map data is already available (on the client) and can be used for non-commercial purposes. Developers can contact us to receive access to our real-time APIs.[...] Why doesn't waze work with OpenStreetMaps? Waze has the technology to create dynamic maps from consumer driving relatively quickly. This is how we created the map in Israel, but when we planned on making our app available on the US market, we decided to use an existing map as a base, rather than start the map building from scratch, and considered various map providers including OSM and TIGER. We are committed to keeping waze free for our end users who help build the system, yet we're a commercial company who's looking to generate revenue down the line. When looking at the OSM licensing terms, we felt that they might limit us from certain business models in the future, and, therefore, we decided to use TIGER maps. This may change in the future, however, and we are open to potential cooperation with OSM, and other, similar, services.
