Re: [OSM-talk-be] city names - bug in OFM?
Some of them are digitised, some aren't. You can go to http://www.kbr.be/collections/cart_plan/collections/collections_nl.html then under Kadastrale plannen, click on one of the provinces (For Luik, click on a different, random province, for Luxembourg, there are no maps sadly). This opens the search website which gives you no results (but at least brings you to the right page). On that page, go to Cartes et plans = Kaarten en plannen, and this time, click on the correct province. Then you see a list of municipalities (from the 19th century, with old spelling), sorted by arrondissement. Then you can open the scan reader by clicking on the image (not the title). You'll see that the map gets a copyright mark, this means that the map as image is protected. However, the data you can deduce from the map isn't altered since the creation of it (it isn't rectified nor georeferenced), so it's usable for OSM. As there's no export option, the easiest way to use it is to zoom in to certain parts, and make screenshots. I normally made 4 screenshots for a normal village, with a bit of overlap. However, the maps may be so skewed that you need to adapt the reference points depending on the part of boundary you're drawing. Note that not all villages are present. Sometimes you're lucky that all surrounding villages of a certain village are present, then you also have the boundaries. Other times, it might take guesswork, or using even worse (older) maps. Re: [OSM-talk-ie] upload problem
Caroline did you resolve your issue? The conflict is is due to someone modifying and uploading an object while you were still editing. In the case of say a county or province relation, the other mapper may not be editing in your immediate vicinity. So you need to sync your dataset and then reconcile the differences ie do you keep your modifications, their modifications or both. In the case of a county relation normally you would keep both - ie you both split a different way on different parts of the county. Have a look at https://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/Help/Concepts/Conflict Without knowing the details of the conflict normally I would say accept both your and their changes into the relation and see what you end up with. The longer you leave it the harder it can be to resolve. If stuck, save your work-in-progress daatset as a osm file and pop into https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.oftc.net/osm-ie Someone might be able to give your realtime help or even get your osm file and try to resolve it for you. Uploading often, especially if you are editing along a county boundary helps avoid or minimize any conflict issues. If you're talking about fixmes that don't carry usefull info, then it doesn't matter wether they were created by imports or not. For all the other manually entered fixme, a lot of care and discussion should be performed before attempting anything automatically. Even the rather useless fixme=yes should be handeled with care. The mapper might have added information that he knows to be perfectible and wanted to enlight that. My guess is that manually-entered fixmes will not lend themselves to automated fixing at all.
C'est donc bien un place dans ce cas de type voisinage *housing estate* - a residential area where the houses were all planned and built at the same time J'ai pas regardé si place=housing_estate était défini mais on sort du sujet. [OSM-legal-talk] Confusion about Pins, Trivial Matching, and Collective Databases
I could use more clarification, I keep reading what seem to be conflicting or nuanced positions. What We Want to Do I want to generate a map for a company intranet site showing a client where his vehicles are currently based on lat/long coordinates (given to us by our proprietary mobile app which they run) and existing customer locations (to which those trucks are driving today) (based on the business addresses the customers have previously given to us). We'd set up an OSM tile server for this and use a library for layering/interaction. We don't need to make available our database of truck locations/client addresses. Legal Confusion My reading of the OSM terms lead me to believe that the matching between independent data and OSM data is trivial and thus it is a Collective Database and thus I base this on OSM Legal FAQ which says in 3d, However, if the two datasets are matched 'trivially' by, for example, automated matching using a simple criterion such as name/locality, this is not 'substantial' and remains a Collective Database. ( http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Legal_FAQ#3c._If_I_make_something_with_OSM_data.2C_do_I_now_have_to_apply_your_license_to_my_whole_work.3F ) I also base this on the license ( http://osmfoundation.org/wiki/License#Are_there_any_special_conditions_or_restrictions_for_commercial_or_academic_use.3F) which says, You can however, put separate and distinct data layers on top of your map, such as icons showing specialists points of interest, routes, track logs, shaded areas, contours and the like, then Share-Alike does not apply to these elements as long as they do not interact with the map underneath. But I see what seem to be conflicting responses to such questions, such as on: https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/1073/commercial-use-in-an-application-licenceable?page=1focusedAnswerId=41359#41359 Any clarity would be most appreciated. Re: [OSM-talk] Mechanically Cleaning Up FIXME Tags
fixme=yes is an interesting one socially. It's a bit like tiger:reviewed=no If there's an obvious problem, I might feel confident to fix the issue and clear the tag out. But for most nodes I might be unsure what's wrong, or not be confident I know 100% about the object. Thus the fixme=yes sits there forever, for future generations of mappers to look at, make the same conclusion, and leave the tag for the next next generation of mapper. --- Tools such as Keepright could sidestep some of the fixme clutter by aging out older notes. As a given fixme ages, the percentage chance of it getting fixed goes down. With JOSM at least reading the last edit date is a separate and somewhat slow operation for the mapper. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Problem solved. *Make a specific proposal showing why the fixme tag is needed in order to clean the data.* *Step Two ) *Remaining fixme values with a count above 1 are reviewed.
Re: [OSM-talk] Mechanically Cleaning Up FIXME Tags
To me, fixme tags always come with the implied 'I don't know, it needs surveying from a more knowledgeable local mapper' so I don't think a widespread mechanical edit will help. As others have said: What's the problem with these tags? As they're not harming the database. How will deleting them improve the quality of the database? Keep Right has the option to ignore fixmes that are irrelevant to a user. From what I've seen information added to 'Notes' is worse than fixmes. Re: [OSM-talk] Mechanically Cleaning Up FIXME Tags
I agree with Tordanik that automated addition of fixme=* tags to previously existing objects (just like set better denotation on natural=tree) is counter productive, and not only displays warning on JOSM, but make my days on the ground worst as my osmand is showing non human asked corrections. (Better build an external reporting tool for that) I do also agree with Frederic, imports of external data not conflated added with some fixme=please fix my bad import by surveying it on the ground should be remove alltogether. Good integration should be done at import time and should'nt rely on others by spamming the fixmes. For all the other manually entered fixme, a lot of care and discussion should be performed before attempting anything automatically. Even the rather useless fixme=yes should be handeled with care. The mapper might have added information that he knows to be perfectible and wanted to enlight that. Tordanik wrote On 25.02.2015 02:58, Bryce Nesbitt wrote: It is apparent that a number of imports have left tens of thousands of fixme notes that have a low chance of ever getting addressed. The edit was basically done in order to establish the denotation tag for trees, which was almost nonexistent before. The denotation values were not pulled from an external source, but based on guesses of the kind another tree within x meters = must be a cluster of trees. In my opinion, it could make sense to also remove the denotation keys on trees with set␣better␣denotation. After all, the continuing existence of that fixme shows that no human ever verified these.
None of the values in your get rid list are obviously useless to me, please explain. The fact that something has a low chance to get fixed is irrelevant. There's an infinite amount of OSM data that needs fixing but have a low chance to be. Somebody made the effort to point out particular things with fixme tags, please respect that. The problem is more likely to get fixed with the tag than without. I'm also not a fan of converting fixmes to notes. I use both fixmes and notes, to me they fit different workflows and audiences. And unleashing 0.5M notes will make browsers unhappy. Again, if you think that a particular fixme value needs to be mass-converted to a note, please explain individual cases. Now here's my shortlist of fixme tags that can be simply deleted, with explanation : * fixme=yes Provides no information * fixme=name and variants of add_full_address when QA tools agree that a name or address is missing The QA tools do a better job of pointing those out.
