Re: [OSM-talk] Innovative uses of OSM data in cities?
Hi Jo I'm not sure about what your audience are sceptic and if they have GIS background One could categorize examples into open topographic data (ev. optimized for thematic overlays; not only prerendered styling) and open data for spatial analyses, management, planning, and decision support. To me these are the most common uses of spatial data - besides spatial analyses, management, planning, and decision support: A. Individually styled topographic base map. B. Map as entry page to apps (e.g. where are our customers?) as an alternative to the usual text and list app entries. C. Geoname search and geocoding. D. Point-of-Interests. E. Routing/Navigation Here are some examples I know of out of my head: * OpenEcoMap - a map portraying socio-ecological infrastructure for Swiss landscape planners: http://openecomap.hsr.ch/ * POI Tour - a personalized round tour planner for pedestrians (aka online tourist guide): http://poitour.ch/ Related use cases, less specific: * Many commercial traffic management systems are using OSM data as part of their product today. * OSM data is being used in Swiss polices for crime analysis and prediction. Possible future use cases: * OSM could deliver an ID for objects which could serve for the internet of things (IoT). * "OSM Hotspots": Visualizing popular local (urban) areas and "OSM Place Trends": Showing trending places by ranking "activities" (as of yesterday). See https://twitter.com/sfkeller/status/619954847031410688 I'm looking forward for your talk. --S. 2015-08-31 12:18 GMT+02:00 Paul Johnson: > On Sat, Aug 29, 2015 at 10:39 AM, Jo Walsh wrote: >> >> But I am interested in other examples of novel uses of OSM data, any >> suggestions from the list would be welcome. > > > Not sure if they're still doing it, but I vaguely recall both Trimet and > Portland Streetcar used OpenStreetMap for station vicinity maps. > > ___ > talk mailing list > talk@openstreetmap.org > https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk > ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk
[OSM-talk] Innovative uses of OSM data in cities?
dear all, Next week I'm giving a talk about OSM and the work of the DWG to a group of mostly academics who are interested in Smart Cities and being fairly critical about Urban Big Data. I wanted to show a few examples of innovative uses of the data, or things that can only have come about because so much of the base map is there. OSMBuildings.org and the related 3D work would be one example. Another is some of Alasdair Rae's work visualising urban footprints: http://www.undertheraedar.com/2015/07/urban-footprints-some-building-outline.html And for something different, the OSM based clothing from http://monochome.com/ But I am interested in other examples of novel uses of OSM data, any suggestions from the list would be welcome. Re: [OSM-talk] Innovative uses of OSM data in cities?
Hi Jo, Inasafe for an example? http://inasafe.org/en/ Disaster modelling based on OSM data, particularly buildings. I wrote up a blog post about data collection in Padang, Indonesia: http://hotosm.org/updates/2012-09-24_from_remote_tracing_to_field_mapping_in_padang I just realised that was almost 3 years ago. Tempus fugit and all that, but hopefully still relevant. OpenFireMap and Sochi for example, Sochi Fire Department has used OpenFireMap as their reference for a number of years, even before Sochi.
