Re: [OSM-talk] GeoChat

2018-01-07 Thread Oleksiy Muzalyev

Good morning Ilya,

At the page:
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/JOSM/Plugins/GeoChat

there is a sentence with a mistyped word "ot":

"Right mouse button click opens a popup menu, from which you can enable
a map layer with all nearby users on it, copy selected text to a
clipboard, ot open a tab for talking with a nearby user privately."

I want to correct it, but I am not sure if it should be "to" or "or", as
I just installed the plugin.

Best regards,
Oleksiy

Sorry Paul, that was caused by forcing https on all OSM servers. Java,
turns out, does not auto-redirect from http to https. I've just
updated the URL in the plugin and tested that it works.

Nice to hear somebody uses it :)

I don't tend to use voice chats when I'm editing mostly because I've
usually got my roommate or the TV going at the same time, so I'd miss
things that were said on voice but not in text.

Yeah, I didn't know it now defaults to "Off". Making this a configurable
option would be nice.

Thanks Ilya, I am planning to include GeoChat in an upcoming teaching
session.

Although I don't think I've ever had someone else in the same area mapping
at the same time. But the concept is great. I keep hoping that someone will
be mapping nearby so I can say Hi.

Keep up the great work,
Clifford

Re: [OSM-talk] GeoChat

2018-01-07 Thread Andrew Buck
It is a great little tool.  Simple, but surprisingly effective. It
actually works amazingly well when coupled with a voice chat program.
In HOT we use mumble for voice and the geochat plugin combined with that
allows mappers to "point" to objects in imagery by centering on them and
then letting other user look at the same area to discuss what is being
seen in the imagery.  Things like how a road should be classified, how
to tag a specific thing, etc.  Of course you can use the text chat right
in the plugin as well, but I always prefer voice chat for discussion as
it is just so much faster.

In any case, it is not a plugin I use super often, but when I do need
it, it is just the right tool for the job.  My only suggestion would be
that you consider making "show users on map" default to "on" instead of
"off" like it is now.  I always forget to turn it on unless I
specifically want to collaborate with someone, but I think if it
defaulted to on then it would get a lot more use.  It would be really
fun to be mapping and see other people showing up in the area to see
what you are working on.  I think it would really add to the sense of
community in OSM.

I love GeoChat, not so much the chat part, but the seeing other users
in the JOSM viewport "on the ground" part. I love that, it is like
exploring together.

I used it about a week ago and it was working fine then, but haven't
tried it more recently than that.  So the project is not dead, but that
doesn't mean there aren't issues at the moment.

2013-05-12 Thread Peter Barth
Hi Ilya,

I had time to test and experiment with your plugin today. And I'm
impressed, it's really nice and quite useful.

However, I found some small bugs and have a feature request. And as I
don't know where to put those, I'm doing it here :)

Bugs:
1. If the chat gets focus during e.g. the area tool you can't re-focus
the map by clicking on it, you have to click on the select tool.

2. If I switch the mapping area to some quite different place
(downloading new data) the last message(s) get printed out alot of
times.

And finaly a feature request :) Would it be possible to attach to the
upload system and alert me, whenever one of the other users uploaded
something? And best to somehow display his changeset's bounding box?

Thank you, and hope more people start to use your plugin :)

Peda

That sounds great. I always wanted to have something like that!

I have some thoughts about it - not meant to criticize, I'm really
looking forward to seeing this used more widely!

* Are private messages really private in the senses that only the
user logged in as the recipient will receive them? If not, maybe rename
to directed messages or so.

* If this catches on, there will soon be demand for some kind of
authentication - that keeps me from joining the chat under the name
Zverik or so ;) maybe it could be implemented with OAuth, where the
server would check with the OSM server whether the logged-in user has
the same user name in OSM, and then notifies clients whether a certain
user name is authenticated or not. People could still use any name but
clients could make them show up in grey or so if they're not authenticated.

* I don't yet understand how messages are located. You seem to be using
point coordinates only, so if i write something is that always mapped to
the centre of my curren viewpoint? If I zoom out and have a 50x50km area
on my screen, will I only see the messages pertaining to a 20km circle
in the middle of my screen? - I have a feeling that maybe the plugin and
protocol might benefit from extending this to use rectangles in sending
as well as polling for messages.

* Auto-login for the plugin would be great.

* Maybe announce on JOSM's message of the day to get more people to
try it out?

Great work!

Bye
Frederik

Hi! Sorry to bother you, but I've written something again, and I'd like
for everyone to use it :)

 http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/**wiki/JOSM/Plugins/GeoChathttp://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/JOSM/Plugins/GeoChat

It is a plugin for JOSM that allows users mapping in a same area to talk
to each other. At the least it should render a chat window in MapCraft
obsolete: users at online mapping parties would be able to interact inside
the map editor. Also it could lessen a chance of mapping conflicts, because
users' location can be shown in a map window.

Hey, this sounds very interesting! I'm going to check it out instantly.

cheers,
Martin
