[OSM-talk] The real face of MAPS.ME edits and notes - a short analysis

2017-06-10 Thread Michał Brzozowski
Much has been said about MAPS.ME note and edit functionality on this
list and elsewhere. I tried to get a real picture of how good/bad they
are. I went to mmwatch.osmz.ru and assessed 73 edits/notes made
between June 6th and 10th in Poland. Then I made a spreadsheet
(percentages at the bottom):

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1LsSEOUnt0Yekv9aHPMW54M3BpPUpAwvZ1bVp9kaXTKw/edit?usp=sharing

Redundant name:xx: 18%
Address problem: 10%
Mistagging / name problem: 22%
Duplicate: 22%
Garbage: 8%
Personal bookmarks / data disclosure: 8%

No issues: 26% (only!)

It should be noted that many of these issues (at least the first two)
could be easily prevented in software. It's high time they get fixed.

I have a feeling that the only force preventing a catastrophe are
power users monitoring edits. Many address problems were fixed by
Zbigniew_Czernik ("daily address fixes after newbies"). He is a
prolific mapper since 2009. He recently told me that he's not keen on
devoting even more time to OSM, specifically because of noobs breaking
data (including addresses).

Given this, I'm actually interested in how things look in places
without any established local community. After all, MAPS.ME is popular
all around the world.

2017-06-10 Thread Andres Gomez Casanova

https://www.meetup.com/Maptime-Colombia-OSM/

Todos están cordialmente invitados.

I agree that removing the non standard tags is almost always OK.

What is the advantage of removing them all with an automated edit?
Their presence doesn't damage anything, and editors can add those tags
to their passive removal list.

The TIGER name expansion resulted in a large benefit by removing a
manual task. Changing unused tags would only add to the history file
for a small benefit.

[Talk-us] USA's TIGER data include rail, too

2017-06-10 Thread OSM Volunteer stevea
I know this might seem disconnected from threads regarding TIGER from a week
ago, but I do wish to remind my fellow dear readers of talk-us that the 2008
TIGER import also include(d) rail data, including tens of thousands of
railway=rail ways.

While these have slowly-and-surely improved, especially since the late-2014
"Rail Westerly" and "Rail USA" threads here, with the introduction of
WikiProjects https://wiki.osm.org/wiki/WikiProject_United_States_railways,
https://wiki.osm.org/wiki/Amtrak, and the various state projects, (e.g.
https://wiki.osm.org/wiki/California/Railroads), it is true that OSM has
substantially improved these. However, we still have quite a ways to go.
Should either TIGER cleanup or rail data cleanup in the USA interest or beckon
you, I (once again) invite you to "fall down the rabbit hole" of the first wiki
noted above and perhaps even start a statewide effort in YOUR state: the USA
has five (Alaska, California, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico) statewide rail
WikiProjects underway now, so only 45 to go!

[Talk-it] belluno urban marathon

2017-06-10 Thread Giuseppe
Li ho
contattati, invitati a chiedere eventuali dubbi in lista e vediamo se
rispondono.
Io
non mi sono mai occupato di percorsi e itinerari all'interno di una way. Visto

currently on hold due to concern from other mappers. I'm aware that mass

Re: [talk-ph] Geo mystery: What is this weird northeast line running from San Juan to Montalban?

2017-06-10 Thread Eugene Alvin Villar
Hi all,

I'm resurrecting this old thread[0] because we've been discussing Metro
Manila's water system as part of the fire hydrant mapping exercise during
the mapathon earlier.[1] It turns out that before we have the current San
Juan Reservoir,[2] there was an older Spanish-era reservoir named El
Deposito located in what is now the Pinaglabanan Shrine in San Juan. This
is apparently where the long straight pipeline from Montalban terminated.
You can read a bit of the history of El Deposito on Wikipedia[3] and on the
historical marker installed by the National Historical Commission of the
Philippines.[4] The El Deposito is also roughly in the middle of the
straight line connecting the Santolan Waterworks in Pasig and Intramuros.

You can now see these two lines, one Spanish-era, and the other
American-era, on a map created by Erwin.[5] As you can see, these two lines
converge at El Deposito!

This is really fascinating!

zoeken.

2017-06-10 Thread Rafael Avila Coya

Hola a todos/as:

Rafael.
