[OSM-talk] camouflaged cell towers & the mimics key

2019-12-20 Thread Eric Theise
Hi everyone,

A colleague'd been informally mapping disguised cellphone masts and towers.
I suggested that OSM should be able to accommodate her data plus cough up
information about said structures that had already been mapped but, in
fact, it wasn't so. I proposed a new key, mimics, and it's been voted upon
and approved (21 zip, 3 abstentions).

  https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:mimics

I'd appreciate your help in making the use of this key more widespread.

Two things to do existing masts or towers :
  - tag them with mimics=*. Initial values are: eucalyptus, oak, palm,
pine, or tree; saguaro or cactus
  - remove tower:construction=concealed. After discussion this use of
tower:construction has been deprecated as these towers & masts are most
definitely not concealed even if the telecom equipment they contain is.

If you are willing to contribute a photo of a cellphone mast or tower
camouflaged as a eucalyptus, oak, saguaro, or cactus, it would be most
welcome as a companion illustration for that Value on the wiki page.

Early solstice greetings to you all.

Eric

[Talk-us] seeking named highway nostalgists for aag chicago session

2014-10-21 Thread Eric Theise
A group of us are exploring the possibility of proposing a session for
the upcoming Association of American Geographers annual meeting (21-25
April 2005 in Chicago, IL). Talks need to have some relationship to
named highways (such as Route 66 or the Lincoln Highway) and what
could be called the nostalgia industry.

Write me off list if you'd like to discuss further, thanks!

I'm not sure, how would someone know what it is about without having done it?

I'm not going to go quite as far as Darrell in saying that it's a
meaningless measure, but we're talking about the Board here. I'll
argue that a well-functioning Board should have representatives
skilled in such things as publicity, outreach, fundraising,
accounting, activism, perhaps some amount of legal. It's great if
Board members are actively editing, but people can get an effective
understanding of what OSM is about without being an active editor.

Other measures that I mentioned over IRC yesterday would be things
like GitHub activity, which includes both code to OSM projects (e.g.,
openstreetmap-carto or the rails port) and OSM-US-related process.
State of the Map US is planned via GitHub issues, and the valuable
work of gathering sponsors, scheduling, organizing sessions, selecting
scholarship winners, etc. is buried there, and lost in google
hangouts.

And with all these measures, assessing quantity is a lot easier than
assessing quality.

Re: [Talk-us] US Chapter board elections - time is running out!

2014-09-30 Thread Eric Theise
Thanks, Martijn, for your detailed paragraph.

As someone who's served on the boards of cultural non-profits, I'd add
to Luis' list of common questions: are board members expected to
fundraise and do board members take on fiduciary responsibilities?

I think I know the answers in this case, but others might be
wondering. And I don't know if that'll be impacted by the 501(c)(3)
status.

Longer (a two year commitment?) and staggered terms are a great idea
for the reasons mentioned.

I do agree that that is a challenge, and we have lost valuable time with the
loss of institutional knowledge. We do have systems in place that should
make the transition to a new board easier, but I agree that staggered terms
make sense. We did actually discuss this with the current board, but I
believe it would require a change to the bylaws which we just haven't gotten
around to yet. Something for the next board to pick up!

Again, outsider/lurker, take with grain of salt, IANYL, etc., etc., but in
my past experience this sort of turnover is hard for an org to handle - you
lose a lot of institutional knowledge. The next board might consider either
growing (which reduces the odds of everyone burning out at once) or moving
to longer, staggered terms so only some seats are up for election in any
 given year. Or both. :)

No question DC could host SotM US in style, but I'd be thrilled to see
it move to the heartland. Too big of a stretch for it to be in
Chicago?

 Hi Jeff,

We didn't receive any location proposals, so we're working on locations
and will announce when we have something set up.

Since the global SotM event is usually held in the second half of the
year we've moved the time frame for SotM US up to Spring so that it's not
too close to the global event. This puts us in March-May and FOSS4G is in
September. Also, we've already had a SotM in Portland and while it was
pretty darn great, we're trying to spread the love to other cities, too.

State of the Map US is a great opportunity to bring US and
international mappers together with folks from government, business,
nonprofit, education, and more. It's about coming together and discussing
the future of OpenStreetMap, and about bringing OpenStreetMap to a wider
audience to grow it in numbers and diversity. This coming year we're
 aiming
for a Spring date in March through May.

We look forward to your submissions!
