Yes. We do have hosting. Geolytix is sponsoring a 1GB cloud server with
DigitalOcean. I have setup the one-click wordpress site for now but we
can of course setup any combination of apps on that server.

I'm interested in helping out with an OSM UK website. I have a few ideas.

Actually the thing I'm most interested in is what you're touching on here. I'm
keen to avoid a situation where we have a website festering unmaintained, or
even just having niggling things wrong with it, and no way for me to
pro-actively fix them.

Being easy to use, as an admin, is good... however that doesn't help somebody
who's not an admin. Given our large group of (quite a lot of tech savvy) UK
OSmers, the contribution model of wordpress might feel a bit restrictive. In
fact I've felt this frustration with some of the past SOTM websites. It's not
so good for allowing the wider community to pro-actively fix a niggle.

I guess what I'm saying is... I'm happy with wordpress as long as I am one of
the admins :-)

A git repo approach is quite a neat contribution model for this kind of thing.
But yeah it's not as easy as editing wordpress. If Rob is going to be the most
pro-active maintainer, and he's not comfortable with github, then that's
certainly a problem with that idea.

I'm imagining an OSM UK website could be quite heavy on syndicated content. It
could copy in and present these mailing list posts, the forum, and even have a
chatroom (web->IRC). That would help keep it fresh, and relevant to our
community with less onus on a restricted set of admin users (I think this idea is
a thing we should do regardless of what the rest of the site is built with)

The key messages of the website will of course depend on the other discussion
we're having here: What are the main goals and key messages of the OSM UK
organisation/community?

Hi Dennis,

Don't worry about hosting issues when comparing the options. The group should
probably get its own hosting anyway. The Mappa Mercia one is super easy to use
and that's coming from somebody who is not techy at all.

To set up the wordpress account all that was needed was to sign in to Webfaction
dashboard, select "add new application" and then click wordpress. Ta-da a fully
functional wordpress installation! Since then we added an application for simple (static)
pages. This is how we drive the maps on mappa-mercia.org.

Key things is that whatever we do it is easy to use. The old mappa-mercia site
wasn't and we were dependent on one person. When he left the site died.
Similarly the current state of the map website is github pages system and is
too techie for me. This is frustrating as I now rely on one or two people to do
the updates. You need the barrier to be low so that as many people as possible
can be involved with keeping it maintained.

So here is my 100 day plan (the first general meeting is a given so not
included here):

1. Create a portal for discussion and decision making.

I hate to tell you but talk-gb sucks. In fact mailing lists in general
suck. They work well for techy people but don't appeal to Aunty Jane. If
we want to expand our community beyond our current group we need to
appeal to a less techy audience. Several months ago I looked at all
sorts of platforms many of which are great for discussions and sharing
info (e.g. slack, fleep, gitter, facebook) but very few are good for
group decision making. If we want this project to be a group one (and we
should) rather than a director project then a decision making tool will
help.

I recommend Loomio and it is therefore my first 100 day task. We can
host on their site (like the OSMF do) or self host.

Any volunteers for self hosting? See:
https://github.com/loomio/loomio-deploy

I will set a group up in a few days unless somebody offers to deploy to
their server.

2. Run a competition for ideas (with money to pay for their implementation)

Once a discussion and decision making tool has been set up lets share
ideas. Give a certain amount of time and then pick a winner! The
following are essentially my suggestions to such a competition.

3. Website
We need to start thinking about our website. Whatever we develop has to
cover off our objectives. A big front page map (like openstreetmap.org
) will not in my opinion do that. I prefer a
website such as http://switch2osm.org , http://openstreetmap.de/ , or
http://mappa-mercia.org

Do others agree?

4. Promote the quarterly projects
We've seen that these can be successful but we need a crack team of
people to help promote these. Let's set up such a team.

5. Regional champions
We need to spread the work. If we could have a Chairperson committed to
OSM UK as their day job then great. If not, then let's split the work
and build a community of regional champions.

6. Get a newsletter going
We've set one of these up for State of the Map (via mailchimp) and now
have over 500 people subscribed. Communication requires ongoing work but
I'd put it in the list of top few tasks.

7. Buy some equipment and loan it out.
OSM previously loaned out GPS devices. We could do the same but expand
it to GoPro cameras (for mapillary style mapping), laser distance
measuring devices (useful for building heights), etc..

*Rob*

I agree with Rob. Maillists are terrible. For all the good which OSGB
does, outreach is certainly not a mailchimp strength.

I still believe that a community blog is the way forward at this stage.
There are poll and mail widgets on blogger or wordpress. I personally
prefer blogger as it is already hosted but we can also host a free
wordpress blog on OpenShift. We can also host a wiki but do we have
enough content to justify a wiki. This is probably something for further
down the line. Static websites are good for companies but not really for
a community organisation.

There are poll and mail list widgets on blogger. Other javascript
widgets are also available.

I actually just created a poll for the most suitable web platform for OSMUK.

- Community Blog (blogger)
- Static Webpage
- Wiki
- Loomio
- Slack (i don't really get it)
- Maillist (talk-gb)

Have a look and vote on

https://osmuk.blogspot.co.uk/

Please drop me a mail if you want to be a moderator and post stuff. It
would be nice if people give it a try and post some information. Rob,
can you post your roadmap please?

Being tied up with work myself right now but plan to do a post about the
OSM projects my company is currently doing.

I can also sort out a maillist widget for OSMUK next week.

Best,
Dennis

2016-04-29 Thread Dennis Bauszus

Hi guys...

I have setup a blogger blog.

https://osmuk.blogspot.co.uk/

I believe that a blog will improve the way we can distribute information
and encourage an active discussion via comments.

I have made comment sections open to everyone but we can lock this down
to registered users.

I invited osmuk at nomoregrapes.com to become a blog author. I am not
sure whether a google account is required to be a blog author.

Can you please send me your email addresses if you are interested in
becoming a blog author and I will send you invites.

I think a post about where we are and what we plan to do in the next few
months will be helpful.

A post to invite interested person to become founding members is also a
good idea. We can thereafter send a link to some organisations who might
be interested (e.g. Universities, GIS companies).

Cheers,
Dennis

I also missed the previous conference call due to a deadline. Will sit
in again tomorrow evening.

I have reminded a few people to sign up as founding members. I would
also recommend to contact GIS teachers at UK universities. I recently
participated in a careers talk for first year GIS students and the
knowledge on OSM is poor. It is imperative to gather interest at the
grass root to really support the project.

I will contact colleagues at King's College, University London, Kingston
University. Perhaps everyone should contact academic peers if you have
some here in the UK.

I am web developer and would be happy to setup a website for OSM UK in
future. My company Geolytix can host this site on one of our shared
DigitalOcean cloud server or we can host the site on an Openshift gear.

To start with it would be great to have a wordspace blog in which we can
post weekly, meeting updates and notes and also improve access to an
open discussion via the comments section.

Cheers,
Dennis

I investigated the shops keys recently and found among others:

toolhire, gereral, keycutting, manacure, bppkmaker, car stufff,

Hi everyone,

We would like to be part of the UK Chapter of OSM and are happy to
discuss sponsoring.

I am working for Geolytix http://geolytix.co.uk/ and we are looking into
means of making OSM the base for our datasets moving gradually away from
Ordnance Survey Vector Maps.

I am looking forward to participate in the conference call on Thursday.
