As there were as usual no replies on this list to my remarks about missing bus line numbers and accent-less uppercased place names, I wrote to the TEC myself. They recognized my remarks as valid points and they said that they will fix these problems, but no sooner than September. I'll cc: you. I wonder if it wouldn't be wiser to let's start ! in September with that data rather than do it twice. Why would we be doing it twice? What they will provide sometime after September should have exactly the same contents as what my scripts are calculating from the data they provide. Anyway, I don't see why it was needed to bother TEC with this. They provide the data as is and it's our responsability to convert it to something we can work with. I'm actually rather surprised you got a positive answer from them. I don't understand you. Don't you find interesting if they used our lowercase names and we would just have to copy theirs in the future rather that have to compare their new uppercase names with the previous uppercase names to detect changes and make the corresponding changes in our lowercase names? More generally, don't you think that cooperation to synchronize with them is fruitful? If they know us, they might use our map and even, why not, update it themselves. Don't you like that hope? Whatever I try, I see accent-less uppercased place names in your file. What did you try? 2 files found their way into the zip file. I hope you were looking at the most recent one. I'm recreating them now. Like a ⅔ sized *.bz2 an *.osm.zip file is supposed to contain a single *.osm to be loaded as such in JOSM. Rather than explaining what I did I wrote in the frame below a skeleton of a procedure for the wiki. Failing other instructions, I acted logically with what you announced as The OSM file In the mean time it's possible to determine whether a stop is new or not. i.e. if a stop with that ref is already present in the Openstreetmap data I'm downloading with Overpass. Basing your comparison on the data will get you into trouble. How will you do in the future when both OSM and TEC data will contain the same tags with possible different values because either TEC corrected an error or OSM corrected an error that remains in TEC? How will you know that the data has been updated? It's easy by using the source tags which are made for that and that I recommend below. Now if you firmly intend not to use the source tag, PLEASE say it because I'm in the process of proposing a wiki update to make this easier with ISO dates and well explained and I would save me the hassle. I thought that you had found the line numbers, but I don't see them. They are in the route_ref key. Where did you expect to find them? In the route_ref key that I did not see. Plus, since beginning of May, I am asking if anyone saw line numbers. Especially with the SPW viewer that does not work. The data is supposed to come in shape and corollary files in a zip to be loaded right into JOSM. I did that. No line numbers I could see. I suppose TEC consider that the data must be simple to use (simply by loading the shapefiles) and not by difficult trickery. I wrote that I found this: I made the following TEC = OSM tag conversion. POT_NOM_HA = name POT_ID = ref POT_ZONE_T = zone There are two files containing TEC data. TEC__mm.osm.bz2 containing the converted latest TEC data. TEC_todo.osm.bz2 containing the data remaining to be moved to OSM. Start JOSM and FileDownload from OSM the area containing the data you want to update. Be careful, especially when loading new OSM data, to always have the correct layer selected. If it exists: Check if source=survey -mm equals TEC -mm yes: you can Copy all Keys/Values from TEC and EditPaste tags them to OSM no: check for a Note explaining that a TEC value was incorrect and CopyPaste only the rest Be sure that survey -mm and TEC -mm are updated to the new values: this is what is going to tell to remove the bus stop from TEC_todo.osm.bz2 Move the bus stop to the correct location, using Bing or other map layer. Re: [OSM-talk-be] TEC Open Data: let's start !
It's a lot of data and it's coming from an outside source, so yes it's an import. No way to get around that by calling it anything different. It's best to go through the proper channels. That way nobody can say we didn't at least try to do things the right way. If we fall flat on our noses, so be it. I had always thought data like this is (and addresses) is something we want to have in OSM. And visiting each bus stop (or house) is simply not practical. By the time you did all of them, you'd have to start over again. I do agree sometimes imports hurt the community, which is why I'd like to get the community involved as much as possible. I also think we're going about this the right way. This is not a data dump. We are integrating the new data with what's already present in OSM. I often find myself improving the topology of the roads while adding stops and shelters and benches and platforms. For Flanders we have now the street names in a WMS layer, so during validation I'm also adding those for the roads I touched (adding nodes or splitting). Unfortunately it's extremely time consuming to do it this way, but it's still more efficient than visiting 7 bus stops all across the country and jotting down their details. Re: [OSM-talk] [Talk-GB] Fwd: Adding links to Wikidata (and Wikipedia?)
Archer wrote: I understood your further post in this manner: you want to take the Wikipedia link and add with a script or bot the associated Wikidata-ID. This would add the Wikidata ID Q3038 to both OSM objects place=island and boundary=administrative of Heligoland because both objects in OSM could link to the same Wikipedia article. Hi Archer, I don't think that is what Andy is proposing. My understanding is that the script would look for objects in wikidata that have a location (lat/longitude) and some wikidata tags that help us to identify the object (e.g. that it's a church and it's name is St Nicolas's). The script would then look for a similar object in OSM assessed according to the lat/longitude in OSM and other OSM tags (name=St Nicolas's, and amenity=place_of_worship). It would then flag the match for a human to check, or if accepted, automatically add the wikidata tag if the level of certainty matches some threshold. This way we are adding wikidata to objects that may not have any wikipedia tag in OSM. The wikidata may include links to an appropriate wikipedia page (in multiple languages). The questions we are trying to answer are: - Is this worth the effort? - What are the risks of introducing bad data and how can we reduce/eliminate this? - Do we have anyone in the OSM or WikiData/Wikimedia Commons community that would be willing to help write the script? My answers are: - Yes, we benefit from the linked data and all the great resources on Wikimedia Commons. We stand to gain a lot from being open to the ideas of the Wikidata/Wikimedia Commons community. - I'm open to hear what people have to say. - In OSM, possibly, but there's more work than devs. We may have more luck looking on the Wikimedia Commons community. Re: [OSM-talk] Organizational mapping policy
Hi, On 05/14/2014 01:44 AM, Paul Norman wrote: Some possible guideline requirements could involve - Disclosing those who are directing them (e.g. employers or who they are contracting for) on the users page Effective yesterday, Wikimedia have added the following to their terms of use: ... you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. Full text on https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Board_letter_on_paid_contributions_without_disclosure They essentially draw two lines that determine when disclosure is required: 1. you have to (expect to) receive compensation 2. for a specific contribution. People who require money for general contribution - e.g. a university employee who, as part of their contract, edits Wikipedia in his or her field of knowledge, does not need to disclose that; only if they are specifically asked to do something. It is a bit unclear to me how such a distinction would work in OSM (or even how it is supposed to work in Wikipedia) but we can just sit back and watch how that policy plays out. CartoDB is offering many different basemaps including OSM based ones which is great... except that in such case, their attribution does not comply with http://osm.org/copyright On the map itself, CartoDB logo appears on the bottom/left and a single CartoDB text link goes to their attribution page ( http://cartodb.com/attributions) which does not clearly say which kind of base map is used on the map where the link appears. I don't think this should ever be done without a human check, because there are often several related objects with similar names near each other. To continue your example, there could be St Nicolas's, St Nicolas's Church Gardens, and St Nicolas's Gift Shop all near each other. Which one should the wikipedia page St Nicolas's Church match? Now what if only the gardens exist in OSM because someone imported gardens in the area but no one has mapped the church yet? In my opinion, the risks of doing this automatically are just too high. Re: [OSM-talk] [Talk-GB] Fwd: Adding links to Wikidata (and Wikipedia?)
To continue your example, there could be St Nicolas's, St Nicolas's Church Gardens, and St Nicolas's Gift Shop all near each other. Which one should the wikipedia page St Nicolas's Church match? Great to see support for the idea. I think it's been a bit of a complex one that hasn't been grasped that well. In terms of your reply above, hopefully none of these would be tagged as amenity=place_of_worship and therefore would not be picked up by my example. If they *are* tagged as amenity=place_of_worship then we have a bigger problem!! A script that flags these up for human interaction would be a great start (one for maproulette?) but I'm hoping under tight controls we will find that the level of accuracy is high enough to consider automation. I'm not here to force automation on anyone so lets just focus on a script that flags potential matches for now. Nice idea. I guess overpass is another great tool tgat could be used to retreive data. Wikipedia tags left as is? Absolutely. This is a data creation thing only. We wouldn't remove or change any existing tags. I speak theoretically of course. At the moment this is just an idea, hoping to spark some interest amongst osm developers. And just to check: Such a script wouldn't remove the wikipedia tags from those objects, correct?
--- On *Mon, 2014/6/9, Kenya TAMURA erdkunde.1...@gmail.com erdkunde.1...@gmail.com* wrote: I'll send mail to Imports ML after this local discussion. ___ Talk-ja mailing list Talk-ja@openstreetmap.org http://mc/compose?to=Talk-ja@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ja -- Satoshi IIDA mail: nyamp...@gmail.com http://mc/compose?to=nyamp...@gmail.com twitter: @nyampire ___ Talk-ja mailing list Talk-ja@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ja ___ Talk-ja mailing list Talk-ja@openstreetmap.org
Re: [Talk-GB] Adding links to Wikidata (and Wikipedia?)
It's also, for simialr reasons, easier for a human editor to add a Wikipedia link, but a script (or even the editing tool itself) could then do a lookup and subistite, or add, the Wikidata ID. It isn't that easy to add Wikidata ID's with a script. Wikipedia articles often describe more than one object. For example the article of Heligoland: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heligoland The article describes the island and the municipality. To model this in Wikidata you need two different objects. For the island: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17043877 and municipality: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3038 I've tried to describe the issue here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:wikidata Sorry for my bad english. ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb

I understood your further post in this manner: you want to take the Wikipedia link and add with a script or bot the associated Wikidata-ID. This would add the Wikidata ID Q3038 to both OSM objects place=island and boundary=administrative of Heligoland because both objects in OSM could link to the same Wikipedia article. That would be wrong because the ID of the island is Q17043877. Wikidata needs much consolidation. For example there existed only one object for Heligoland in Wikidata before i fixed it. The object in WD before described the island AND the municipality which is nonsense because the objects have a different area and so on. That's why I wrote it as one example on the Wiki-Page thus the mappers don't type in wrong Wikidata ID's. In Wikidata at the moment there is a big consolidation ongoing because there are also many duplicate objects. (Wikidata-objects were generated from Wikipedia-articles. When the Wikipedia articles of different language versions were not linked with Interwikilinks then there were created duplicate objects in Wikidata). In Germany we added the Wikidata-ID's to all administrative boundaries from AL 4-8: http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=24168p=1 Here is a map with an overview where the wikidata-Tag is used: http://www.netzwolf.info/kartografie/karten/wikidata ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb

Re: [Talk-GB] [OSM-talk] Fwd: Adding links to Wikidata (and Wikipedia?)
Re: [Talk-GB] [OSM-talk] Fwd: Adding links to Wikidata (and Wikipedia?)
Rob On 17 Jun 2014 23:24, John Packer john.pack...@gmail.com wrote: To make this process smoother, it could be good to do things such as retrieve the target object location according to Nominatim and show the wikidata page or preferably the wikipedia page on X language to confirm that's the correct object, and perhaps even show the tags on that object in Level0L or some other format. And just to check: Such a script wouldn't remove the wikipedia tags from those objects, correct? It wouldn't be good to remove it, because the wikipedia tag is well-established and supported by many applications, and support some cases that aren't supported by the wikidata tag. 2014-06-17 19:06 GMT-03:00 Rob Nickerson rob.j.nicker...@gmail.com: To continue your example, there could be St Nicolas's, St Nicolas's Church Gardens, and... ___ talk mailing list t...@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb
