Hey Severin - thanks for getting in touch. We're at the demo alley as well.
Just saw this post on the thackday list:

You're only in town on the 19th?

Rio+20 will occur at Barra da Tijuca. Is it not too far from Copacabana (but

I'm going to be staying in Copacabana. It looks fairly well mapped [0] ... I
may be missing some pockets.

Ruben [1] has done some great satellite tracing in Barra da Tijuca [2] -
there'd be some decent car work there. But what about mapping some more
marginal areas like Cidade de Deus [3]? Open for more suggestions.

What about doing Saturday, June 16th afternoon?

 Ye gods.

Looking at that patch of Lima it appears that name capitalisation is the
least of your worries. Perhaps a starting point might be a few NE-SW and
SE-NW GPS traces (to help align the imagery), and a quick on-the-ground
survey of some of the obviously problematical areas (e.g. way 111912131,
which is unconnected to anything, and on the Bing imagery is a football
 field).

That should give you an idea of the positional validity of what's there -
there's no point in wasting time manually correcting ROAD A to Road A if
Road A doesn't actually exist any more.

Obviously the quick survey to get GPS traces available could pinpoint some
 key POIs too.

 Cheers,
 Andy

What editor (plugin?) do you suggest for this procedure? Or would you just edit

How difficult is it to download an area to an OSM file, check for name=ALL

[OSM-talk] Disconnected streets in Lima

2012-05-02 Per discussione Alex Barth

I'm working with Rub21 right now on improving Lima. We're finding a lot of
disconnected streets there. What's the story behind these? I'm seeing that at
least some of the remaining streets are by user Telecom IP - I'll be sending
him a message. Not sure whether this is license change related, I remember seen
these disconnected roads in Lima well before the bots kicked in.

Right now our plan of action is to repair the streets that match nicely with
Bing satellite imagery and not touch those that don't. I'd like to eventually
repair or remove the ones that appear to be garbage, too.

I'm going to be in Brasilia arriving in the morning on 15, leaving on the night
of 18th. There's going to be two of us (Eric Gundersen will join me).

Would love to do some mapping there. Right now we're identifying priority areas
in Brasilia and looking at knocking out as much as possible with satellite
tracing before we get there. Especially in Brasilia's outskirts but more than
anything in the surrounding cities (Itapoã, Sobradinho, Planaltina, Gama, Águas
Lindas, São Sebastião) there is tons to map.

We're managing our tickets here, expect this list to get longer this week:

https://github.com/mapbox/mapping/issues?labels=brasiliasort=createddirection=descstate=openpage=1

I'd be interested in doing some walking papers action on ideally Sunday (maybe
later in the week as I'm seeing that some pple may not be there that early).

Let me know who's interested, would love to join forces :)

BTW, all of us on the thread so far have been in touch before over the thackday
list, thanks for your help there for finding data sets. Vitor and I've been
also emailing directly. We're incredibly close to get permission to use this
dataset from centrodametropole.br for street names in Sao Paulo.. just
waiting here for a final permission by Daniel Waldvogel Thomé da Silva from the
Universidade de São Paulo - if anyone has a line on Daniel, I would love to
talk. If we manage to open this dataset for community contribution to
OpenStreetMap, this would be a HUGE win during the OGP talks.

Re: [OSM-talk] Database Rebuild scheduled to start on the 27th of March 2012

2012-03-23 Per discussione Alex Barth

A series of people have expressed doubts on this thread that the proposed
rebuild plan is realistic and I haven't seen a response to this here.

If the current schedule is not realistic - is there an update to it in the
works?

Do we need to expect an extended time period of OpenStreetMap being reduced to
read-only mode?

Even if a revised, realistic schedule would reveal a significant delay I would
prefer it much rather than an overly ambitious one that will have us push dates
from week to week - accurate dates would be really helpful for planning mapping
activities, map renders and communications.

Claudomiro:

I saw http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Importa%C3%A7%C3%A3o_SEADE and did
some digging on the SEADE web site, but I couldn't find the shapefile - do you
have a link for it or some key words on it that I could use for a Google search?

I'm working with a mapping team of 7 people here in Washington DC
doing satellite tracing in a series of Brazilian cities:

I'd love to connect with OSM'ers in Brazil - especially if you're
working in one of these cities - to coordinate work and see where we
can help each other out. While we're pretty good in tracing imagery,
we're in dire need for street names :)

Any indicators where we could source street name data from would be highly
 appreciated.

Muito obrigado, Johan -

Is there a specific PDF on the araraquara site you saw that has street names in
it? I looked through all of them and there weren't any.

No need to dig yourself, I just want to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Awesome - want to come up with zones you're seeing as priority and post them as
screenshots here? If there is cloud coverage in the way of these priority
zones, I can try to get satellite imagery.

Aproveitando: o Bing atualizou as imagens de satélite e grande parte da
cidade está coberta por nuvens. Você sabe se tem algum jeito simples de usar
 o set de imagens antigo?

[OSM-talk] Anyone going to this month's GIS conference in Campo Grande, BR?

2012-03-13 Per discussione Alex Barth

If anyone's going to Confêrencia Aplicação do SIG na Gestão Pública Municipal
March 22nd to 23rd [1] in Campo Grande Brazil, I'd love to talk.

Campo Grande has recently seen some good progress on OSM [2] and it would be
great to show that off. At the same time the event's maps look like they could
use some love :) [3].

Here is the program [4], no word of OpenStreetMap.

[OSM-talk] License change: database rebuild schedule

2012-03-12 Per discussione Alex Barth
The message titled The Vandalism has begun on talk-us [1] suggests
that purging the OSM database of non-ODBL data has already begun
leading to data effectively being removed from OSM at least as of
today.

While the license change Wiki page [2] is not explicit about the date
when non-ODBL data will drop from OSM, it does not suggest any earlier
date than April 1st.

- Is there an official database rebuild schedule and where can I find it?
- Until when exactly will the pre-license change OSM database be available?

Alex
