[OSM-talk-ie] Summits imported from mountainviews.ie

2019-12-31 Per discussione Donal Diamond
Just re-subscribed.

The MV import was done in Jan 2009 (eek!) after myself and Dermot met with
Simon.

Before import there was a total of 40 Irish summits in OSM. Back then, the
whole Irish map was a whole lot of nothing - we didn't even have county
boundaries - just shows how much progress we made the last 10 years!

At the time wiki guidance was ele was in wgs84,

' For OpenStreetMap, please use the elevation above sea level defined by
the World Geodetic System
, revision WGS 84.'

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Key:ele=209140

To answer some questions:
tm75 is basically Irish Grid https://epsg.io/29903
The tm75 elevations should be really close to egm96

iemv tags worth keeping? I'd probably just keep iemv:mtnindex to help with
future updates from MV data. There may still be an export page at
https://mountainviews.ie/mv/place_dump.php

The MV data has improved massively since 2009 as they have access to highly
accurate DGPS survey equipment - so worth a hackaton to refresh

overpass.ie is getting lots of requests from 2 ips in Karlsruhe and
diskspace filled up due to logging.

I know one OSMIE member currently living in Karlsruhe ;-)

Looks like planet.openstreetmap.ie is updating.
   timestamp=2017-09-13T09:30:02Z

But tileserver is not updating in a long time
 - http://maps.openstreetmap.ie/state.txt
 - timestamp=2017-06-08T10\:15\:26Z

If you look at the Data tab for an overpass request it will show
- "timestamp_osm_base": "2017-09-11T07:15:02Z",

I've have a look when I get time but tbh I dont have much time anymore to
feed the hamsters.

Any unix sysadmins want to volunteer to help maintaining the OSM IE
infrastructure?

[OSM-talk-ie] New DigitalGlobe satellite imagery layers available!

Just notced 2 new satellite imagery areas are available in iD/Josm.

In Josm you may have to refresh your imagery list to see them.

From a quick look, Dublin imagery looks between 1-2 years old.

Who are your users? - the public or gis-professionals?

Most non-professional people and outdoor enthusiasts would use Irish Grid
EPSG:29903

(29903 replaces OSNI 1952 / Irish National Grid (code 29901) and TM65 /
Irish Grid (code 29902).)

Re: [OSM-talk-ie] North Dock area of Dublin

2016-12-07 Per discussione Donal Diamond
North Dock A ED etc are modern Electoral Districts (ED) which have
formally defined boundaries.

While historically there was a DED (old name for EDs) called 'North Dock',
what would you consider the modern 'North Dock' to be?

If it's another of those vague areas in Dublin like Dublin suburbs with no
defined boundaries, the area you're in depends on whether you ask a snob or
an estate agent.

If its a vague area I wouldn't use an admin area but rather a polygon with
place=suburb and using the external ways of the North Dock A/B/C EDS.

place=suburb "A part of a town or city with a well-known name and often a
distinct identity"

Overpass api is back up.

I'll enable replication updates later today.

It will take about an 20 minutes before areas queries work again.

GOOD NEWS: TSSG [1) in WIT upgraded our hardware so we now have double our
memory and double our cpu. They also increased our diskspace a few weeks
ago as well.

I took the opportunity to upgrade the OS while I was at it. As I find time

[OSM-talk-ie] Irish overpass api is live again

2016-09-03 Per discussione Donal Diamond
The Irish overpass api was down for a few months due to lack to diskspace.

dev3 ran taginfo/nominatim/planet/maps/tileserver/ircbot and all with only
about 10GB of storage space to play with so things were very tight so I had
to drop overpass.

Thanks to John Ronan and the TSGG in Waterford IT, we now have increased
diskspace on dev3.

It is now back up and the UI is available at:
http://overpass-turbo.openstreetmap.ie/

(The API it self is at http://overpass.openstreetmap.ie/)

The API DB is updated every 15 minutes from the diffs at
http://planet.openstreetmap.ie

I find it works well when used in combination with taginfo - ie use taginfo
to find some common tagging typos then click on the 'Josm' or 'Level0'
links to downlaod the data into an editor to fix

eg
http://taginfo.openstreetmap.ie/tags/locality=subtowland

Enjoy (again)

[OSM-talk-ie] Uploaded all the remaining GSGS3906 sheets to mapwarper for rectification

2015-12-23 Per discussione Donal Diamond
I've uploaded any remaining sheets to mapwarper. Let me know if I missed
any as I wont be able to upload any until the new year,

Our layer is now showing 675 maps with 636 maps rectified (94%).

While some of the sheets may only have 3-4 placeholder control points, it
would be great if we could end 2015 with 100% map sheet coverage of
Ireland. Think we can do it?

Looks like those nodes were deleted by DaCor in the following changeset

http://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/31268963

You need to use the conflict dialog to resolve the conflict.

See https://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/Help/Dialog/Conflict
and https://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/Help/Concepts/Conflict

Best to syncronise your entire dataset and then attempt to resolve the
conflicts.

If you have issues pop into https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.oftc.net/osm-ie
and we can see if we can help.

Uploading more frequently helps reduce the likely-hood of conflicts.

Re: [OSM-talk-ie] Query on tracing townlands and dealing with changed lake levels and new boundaries

You can check the online 1901 townland index (there is also a 1911

Inishfale/Inisfale is probably a townland as ARP and boundary is listed on
the map sheets - it must be an omission from the townland indexes?

The map layers showing Irish boundaries is now updated every 15
 minutes.

This includes county/barony/civil parish/ed and townlands.

The map server starts updates at 05/20/35/50 minutes past the hour and
should have all Irish edits up to 00/15/30/45 minutes past
 respectively.
Updates should take about 2 minutes.

I also updated the townland layer to show area in fractional acres from
zoom 14 onwards. This may help you compare the acreage value shown on
 the
GSGS3906 maps to help spot obvious errors.

For example, I picked a spot at random below and you can see that there
  are
a few areas that have the wrong acreage due to some townlands being
  missed:

 http://maps.openstreetmap.ie/oocmaps.html?zoom=15lat=53.71215lon=-6.91047layers=000B0TTFFF

eg Barfordstown is reported as 482 acres as we actually included two
townlands Barfordstown 283 acres and Boolies 198 acres. There's a
 similar
   issue with Calliaghstown nearby.

When comparing fractional acres and ARP (acres, roods, perches) on the
  map,
   bear in mind that:
   1 acre = 4 roods
   1 rood = 40 perches

You'll also notice a small difference in the acreage size reported by
townlands.ie and the map layer. That is due to the map layer
  transforming
to Irish Grid when calculating the area to get a slightly more accurate
calculation. Townlands.ie has to do a lot more analysis so uses a
  different
   spatial reference system.

   Anyway hope it helps.

As part of brianh's and myself's initial work on out townlands project, I
did ~ 50 sheets in SE Carlow and Wexford about 18 months ago.

As mapwarper wasn't available for us then, I rectified them using desktop
software and they were them installed on an OSM ran server called faffy.

faffy died during some maintence and sheets are now no longer available.

Probably best to do them all again on mapwarper as sheets can be constantly
revisited and improved.

I don't have the time or stomach to do them all again to be honest ;-)

Townlands in Carlow and Wexford are complete anyway.

Re: [OSM-talk-ie] upload problem

2015-02-25 Per discussione Donal Diamond
Caroline did you resolve your issue?

The conflict is is due to someone modifying and uploading an object while
you were still editing.

In the case of say a county or province relation, the other mapper may not
be editing in your immediate vicinity.

So you need to sync your dataset and then reconcile the differences ie do
you keep your modifications, their modifications or both.

In the case of a county relation normally you would keep both - ie you
both split a different way on different parts of the county.

Have a look at https://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/Help/Concepts/Conflict

Without knowing the details of the conflict normally I would say accept
both your and their changes into the relation and see what you end up with.

The longer you leave it the harder it can be to resolve.

If stuck, save your work-in-progress daatset as a osm file and pop into
https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.oftc.net/osm-ie

Someone might be able to give your realtime help or even get your osm file
and try to resolve it for you.

Uploading often, especially if you are editing along a county boundary
helps avoid or minimize any conflict issues.

Once you choose for each conflict, click upload again to resolve all

I've also added them to the map viewer webpage at:

  Good news!

I went hunting for map sheets that show Civil Parish boundaries and
 found a
  new source at NUIG.

Brian Hollinshead (brianh) kindly liased with the James Hardiman
 Library,
National University of Ireland, Galway and got permission for use of map
  sheets for OSM use.

  http://archives.library.nuigalway.ie/memorial/memorial-atlas.html

I've uploaded some of the sheets to mapwarper here:

  http://mapwarper.net/maps/tag/Memorial%20Atlas%20of%20Ireland

And I've started a map viewer where u can overlay townlands, civil
 parishes
  and baronies at:

 http://maps.openstreetmap.ie/civilparish_barony.html?zoom=9lat=52.61135lon=-7.97937layers=BFTT

Carlow is also available in Josm imagery list.

The Civil parish boundaries on the map sheets correspond to our townland
boundaries quite well but I have found the odd error. So use the
 sheets as
a starting point to identify what townlands are in what civil parish.

If in doubt, refer to the 1901 townland index and 1911 supplements on
  histpop:
   1901: http://url.ie/y5tl (don't forget to check errata
 as
  well)
   1911: http://url.ie/y5tm

You can also look at townland lists for each civil parish at:
http://www.irishancestors.ie/search/townlands/parish_index.php

This database has lists from 1901 which would be preferable than using
 the
db at seanrua which is based off 1830s index.

Even if you have already finished mapping baronies and civil parishes in
your county, please consider warping the sheet for us. Please able to
return a fully rectified set of sheets to NUIG is a fair exchange for
 them
  making them available to us.

  Enjoy!

to be split:

Looking at townland index - both are in Ballykine Civil parish, so their
names actual are name=Sheeanabeg (Whaley)and name=Sheeanabeg
(Robeck) . That's an odd one all right.

It is better not to put the brackets in name as it messes up a search for
the name in nominatim. Carlow and Wexford were the first places where
 we
started adding townlands so may not have best practice.

eg Ballynagran (ED Glenealy) a seach for Ballynagran finds the
  node and not the area:

 http://nominatim.openstreetmap.ie/search.php?q=Ballynagranviewbox=-16.23%2C56.11%2C2.23%2C50.72polygon=1

Re adding a place node as well. Nominatim will also merge the place node
inside the area if both names and rank match so you dont get duplicates.
To be explicit, you can also add the place node with role label to the
  area relation.

eg Bolagh Upper has the node as a linked place:
  http://nominatim.openstreetmap.ie/details.php?place_id=844862

And a search for Bolagh Upper will only yield one result.

Regarding the townland in a separate civil parish, would it not
technically be the same townland just with internal borders? Sorry for
being pedantic and possibly this was already discussed but I just want to
 be sure.

Not pedantic at all - correctness requires us to tease out all the finer
details. In OSM being pedantic is a virtue ;-)

Townlands in separate civil parishes are still legally townlands in their
own right:

see

http://www.histpop.org/ohpr/servlet/PageBrowser?path=Browse/Census%20%28by%20date%29/1901/Irelandmno=453pageseq=46

You can also check the 1911 supplement to see if there were any subsequent
changes.

http://www.histpop.org/ohpr/servlet/TOC?path=Browse/Census%20%28by%20date%29/1911/Irelandactive=yesmno=460tocstate=expandnewdisplay=sectionsdisplay=tablesdisplay=pagetitles

In the case of baronies, as they were not changed as townland boundaries
changed there are cases where the boundary will just go through the
middle of a townland though.

Fixed Bord na Móna see http://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/28175757

I just did a wizard query on http://overpass-turbo.openstreetmap.ie/ for:

“operator=Bord Na Móna in Ireland”

Then selected Export/load data into an OSM editor: Josm.

After that it was a simple select all and fix operator tag.

 Hi,

 Happy New Year to all.

 1. Bord na Móna www.bordnamona.ie is sometimes recorded on OSM as Bord
 Na Móna (capital N).

While OSM can understand the two are the same thing, other systems don't,
 e.g. on this map:
 http://www.itoworld.com/map/248?lon=-7.95104lat=53.25239zoom=10fullscreen=true#
BnM railways are shown as blue while BNM railways are shown as green, as
 if they were separate operators.

Is there a simple method for doing mass changes like this?

 2. Similarly, many Irish Rail facilities are recorded as IÉ (two letters)
for Iarnród Éireann. In the English language Irish Rail should be used.
Admittedly, as it is only two characters, this is something that has to be
 done much more carefully.

We have a list that ppl can add their name to:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Ireland/Mapping_Townlands#Join_In

There's also a tool that will show mappers in your area.

http://resultmaps.neis-one.org/oooc?zoom=10lat=52.80163lon=-8.98625layers=B00TFT

If you want to know who's mapping townlands in your county, rorym might be
able to add a feature to http://www.townlands.ie/ to list top 10 townland
mappers in each county.

He's created an issue to track this:

These are some of the GSI sheets. Unfortunately they are of lower quality.
It is still possible to trace townlands from them, but I would suggest
avoiding these 2 sheets for now, and work on better quality ones until you
get the hang of tracing the townlands.

In Galway I came across one of these as my second sheet, left it and did
another 2 sheets before I felt confident enough to be able to spot all the
boundaries. Once you do make a start, try to aim for the smaller ones
first, or ones through bogs where the townland boundary can be easily seen.

overpass is the way to go it is _very_ powerful.

Here's an example that will download all county, townland, barony and civil
parish boundaries in County Carlow

1) Go to the ireland-only overpass turbo with my pre-baked query:
 http://url.ie/rl4a
2) Press Run
3) It will return 6MB of data - press 'continue anyway'
4) Download josm compatiable osm
  a) go to Export menu
  b) right click on raw data directly from Overpass API' and select
Save Link As and save as something.osm
5) Load in josm/maperative/qgis etc

Hope this helps.

have no name assigned.

http://maps.openstreetmap.ie/?zoom=14lat=52.27306lon=-9.70088layers=B000FFTFTF

These should be easy targets for novice mappers - they just have to
add the name tag.
Walking papers will be useful here - they can just scribble the names
on their sheets.
The actually editing can be done back at the pub (with free wireless)
or after the event.

Also I have never been to a mapping meetup/event so any advise on the best
way to run this would be appreciated.

There's some tips on the wiki have a look at
 http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mapping_Weekend_Howto

There's also a handy app that you can use to carve up the area:
 http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/MapCraft
 http://mapcraft.nanodesu.ru/map

While I cant make it there's a good chance some irish mappers will be
online on the irish osm chat room (we're discussing your email there
right now) whre you can get some real-time help.

Re: [OSM-talk-ie] Coastline Issue

2011-04-26 Per discussione Donal Diamond
You can check what date the coastline shapefiles are by examining the
date of the downloadable files on the OSM tileserver:

HEAD http://tile.openstreetmap.org/processed_p.tar.bz2 | grep Last-Modified
Last-Modified: Sun, 03 Apr 2011 01:24:09 GMT

I've updated the coastline shapefiles on maps.openstreetmap.ie and the
coastline is fine:

http://maps.openstreetmap.ie/?lat=55.18409lon=-7.97133zoom=17layers=B000FFTF

The main OSM tile server is under a lot of pressure at the moment.
Even though the coastline shapefiles have been updated, it is dropping
some rendering requests.

Re: [OSM-talk-ie] OSM Meet-Up in Dublin July

2009-07-22 Per discussione Donal Diamond
For those of use not on twitter or #osm-ie:

Beers and meeting, Wed 22nd, Kehoe's pub S. Anne Street, 19:00, all welcome.

I suggest instead of wearing a red rose in lapel, displaying a GPS
should make people easy to spot.

 Hi,

I will be in Dublin from Monday, 20. till Thursday 23. July and would
like to meet some OSM mappers there.
I've already spoken with some of you on twitter and in the IRC and they
said it should be possible to organize a meet-up.
I would prefer the evenings on 21. and 22. July.
Already excited to get to know OSM in ireland and tell you something
 about OSM in Germany :-)

 Best,
 Jonas
