Hi Colm,

Did a reply ever go back to Peter with regard to this?
If they'd be willing to release the data under ODbL then that would be
great.
Rorym mentioned Public Domain, but I'd doubt they'd release it under that.

 Hi,

I've been editing OSM for the last few weeks, concentrating on railways,
speed limits and land use. It gives an interesting insight into the maps
 part of the journey planner.

There is a current query as to whether the Dublin Bus stops database can
be used as a whole. On the one hand, it is proprietary information from
Dublin Bus, but on the other, I understand the NTA can (has?) taken
ownership of that data and it can be reused
under the Re-Use of Public Sector Information regulations.

You sent me a copy of the data you exported to Google Transit a while
back. We would need the up to date information.

 Any advice or comments welcome.

 Thank you

Hi Keith,

This looks good.
I particularly like the fact that you're using Open Street Map in the
display, but I need to point out that our license has changed, so it's no
longer cc-by-sa, we're now using the open database license (odbl).
More information about the license change is here:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Open_Database_License

Unfortunately we are unable to use any data that was sourced using Google
Street View, as it would be derived from a copyrighted source.
The furthest we might be able to go in this instance would be to use your
map to physically go to these places and collect the GPS location data.

If you want to go in the other direction though, we have a number of
shrines on Open Street Map that you could use on your site, eg:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/node/1068397427
On the main osm site, just search for 'shrine ireland' and you'll get a
list of stuff.

Thanks
Larry

[Talk-bd] Licence change data loss...

2012-03-01 Per discussione Larry O'Neill
Hi All,

As some of you may be aware, OSM is changing to a new license, and new
Contributer Terms.
This presnets a chalenge in terms of users that have not responded, or have
rejected the new terms.
As of April 1st, any data that hasnt been relicensed will be removed.
April 1st is a hard deadline for the license change, so any users who have
not signed on will have all of their data removed form the map.
This includes large chunks of Dhanmondi and Baridhara, for example.

There are two things we can do about this.
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Asking_users_to_accept_the_ODbL
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Remapping

Obviously, asking users to accept is much easier.
So I asked Simon Poole to build a list of users that are involved, and how
many objects would be lost.
The list for Bangladesh is quite short:
http://odbl.poole.ch/bangladesh-20120213-20120229-poly.html
Orange means no decision - possibly the user is not aware. Red is a user
hat has rejected.
Does anyone want to help me with contacting undecided users?

In terms of remapping, these are two tools that show what data we are going
to lose if we do nothing:
http://tools.geofabrik.de/osmi/?view=wtfelon=90.41177lat=23.77358zoom=10
http://cleanmap.poole.ch/?zoom=11lat=23.76511lon=90.42847layers=00B0

With any hope we'll be able to clean this up, and avoid losing large
ammounts of data.
Is anyone willing to jump on board with this and get going with it?

 Hi All,

I've been doing a fair bit of work on OpenStreetMap over the last while.
This started after I got back from my last trip to Bangladesh in early
 December last year.
I hadn't edited OSM in almost 5 months, which was the biggest gap since
 i got involved.
After collecting gps traces in Bogra, Saidpur, Banderban, Coxs Bazaar
and Dhaka, I decided not to waste any time in getting the map updated.
The experience of doing stuff with OSM again sucked me back into it,
and since the new year, my activity on OSM has increased hugely.

Then I realised something - the vast majority of my recent work has
been in Ireland, and very little in Bangladesh.
The reason I was putting off Bangladeshi edits was because I was
slightly unsure about how to approach it.
There is alot of potential in Bangladesh for OSM, with great sources of
 information, and enthusiastic people.
Being on the other side of the world, it's difficult for me to get a
feeling for how the Bangladeshi community maps.
And so I started thinking I'll leave this bit till later, maybe
discuss it with the local Bangladeshi mappers...

Up until now, I havent actually discussed any mapping with you, the
 Bangladesh OSM community.
This is something I intend to correct.
So any time I make a significant edit from now on in Bangladesh, I will
be emailing this list about the where, how, why, and everything else.
I really hope this wont be a one-way thing, and that we get some active
 discussion going.

Wishing you all the best, and happy mapping!

[OSM-talk] odbl non-agreement and humanitarian exceptions.

2012-02-02 Per discussione Larry O'Neill
Hi All,

Apologies for any overlap in recipients for this - I very rarely post to
mailing lists, so I am not sure how wide a net for this issue would be
appropriate.

There was a discussion on the #osm irc channel recently about the
possibility of approaching non-agreers to the new CT about any data they
may have contributed to areas where the removal of such data could have a
negative effect on our humanitarian efforts.
Looking for example at how much data we stand to lose in Haiti, this is
something that may limit the difficulty of those that are on the ground in
these places and struggling to remap.

The possibility of haing a bounding box around areas such as these was
mentioned - and there is aparantly a precedent for a users data within a BB
being retained.

Any thoughts, comments, or points?

[OSM-talk-ie] map scanning, etc

2009-09-21 Per discussione Larry O'Neill
Hi,

I scan maps.
Not in a sophisticated way.
It's something I'm just starting on.
I am setting up a WMS server for the maps I scan.
So far I have about 30 1910's era 6 inch and 25 inch maps, and I'm
scanning bit by bit.
The server isn't up yet, but it's getting there.
I'm looking into the possibilities of getting more than I currently have by:

a) looking in university map archived as suggested on the #osm-ie IRC channel
b) talking to other people who might have access to personal collections.

I'm starting small enough, and I'm not setting my goals too far out
for now, but it would be nice to be able to serve up the first such
survey of an entire country ever completed, making it available for
all.
For now my 1910's era maps will be a starting point.
I have rectified some already using geothings, but I dont consider it
to be good enough yet:
