[talk-ph] Startup Weekend Manila October 21-23, 2011

2011-10-11 Thread Andre Marcelo-Tanner

Anyone going to this?

http://manila.startupweekend.org/

Startup Weekend is an intense 54 hour event which focuses on building a
web or mobile application which could form the basis of a credible
business over the course of a weekend. The weekend brings together
people with different skillsets - primarily software developers,
graphics designers and business people - to build applications and
develop a commercial case around them.

Who will I see there?

Andre

I like this, I myself remember directions and roads like I have an

wife has no idea where to go even if we go to a certain area every day.

I guess most of us in the list have a natural talent for spatial
navigation (instead of cue-stimulus-based navigation)? :-)

To: OSM talkt...@openstreetmap.org

OpenStreetMap License Change Phase 3 begins this Sunday. A full
announcement has gone to the Announce list and there is full
information at the Find out more about OpenStreetMap's upcoming
license change link on http://wiki.openstreetmap.org or directly at
http://www.osmfoundation.org/wiki/License/We_Are_Changing_The_License

Any help getting this out to non-English speaking mailing lists much
appreciated.

In summary: This only affects you if you are an OpenStreetMap
contributor who registered before 12th May 2010 and have not taken
part in our voluntary re-licensing program. Before being able to edit,
you will have accept or decline new contributor terms. To give time
to get the word out, this does not take effect until Sunday!

Make sure to test the actual droid phone + app to see how fast it can
acquire a GPS lock and send it with the tweet or else it might be
sending tweets without the GEO info
i guess the best way to save batt is to use the GPS and GPRS only every

what if theres no signal or bad gprs coverage?

The best I can think of is to use a droid phone and send geo-tweets.
This way all he do is tweet his current position to show it on the

Once you have something which can upload, you just figure out how to
display the logs online using a website or a 3rd party service.

Something like Sportstracklive or its competitors let you track yourself
live using a phone or similar device and display it live online, the
problem with constant upload is the battery drain, and well GPRS charges
but im sure an 1200 unlimited 3G subscription might offset that.

I know the developer of sportstracklive, he's a foreigner living the

It's cool for live tracking as longs its not a security issue, and allow
people to comment or alert people as he passes by certain areas.

I know he walks during the day, is there a mobile device charges solar

some dynamo that will charge the phone as he walks :)

If you have a Garmin GPS device then you most probably have heard of
RoadGuide.ph. In my personal opinion, if you want the best
Garmin-compatible routable map of the Philippines, then go for
RoadGuide.ph, but you should also get Maning's osmphil map
http://esambale.wikispaces.com/osmphil_garmin since OSM has better
data than RG in some areas, most especially if you have not attained
the contributor status in RG and have only access to the Basic map.

person who might want to do a visualization or else, we just have fun
after and relax and make kwento. Maybe teach some of the newcomers on a
laptop etc.
I agree with that post though for newcomers, an introduction to the
project and mapping should be given and what were are going to do. Those
who know what goes on are fine but the new ones probably have no idea
what were going to do or whos going to do what or who are the teams etc.
Or theyre just sitting around waiting while we organize everything, so
some overview of the activities for the day would be good.

Maybe for future planning this, we could solicit donations from inns on
the island or from Sun Cruises. I think this is the list of places:
(1) Corregidor Inn - by far the best accomodation but the most expensive.
(2) MacArthur's Cafe - near the Lorcha dock on the north side of
Bottomside. (Bottomside is the area where you landed on the island).
They have a few cottage style rooms, basic accommodation.
(3) Corregidor Cove Cafe - they have a few cottages on the ocean front
on the south side of Bottomside. Again basic accommodation.
(4) Sea Calm Inn - located up the hill between Bottomside and
Middleside. Also known as the 'hostel'. The sign there says P650night.
(09189442884 or 09185241503)

Maybe offer them to map the place for free, just free stay or stipend,
and we can show them how to print a new and updated map or how they can
get the map image and add their own graphics to it to make their own
'Tourist' Map of the Island that they can sell or make use of

ok had a look, I dont have that much tracks in Tagbilaran but those
roads match my GPS tracks, compared to the actual roads in OSM which are
a bit off. So so far looks good.
Looks like arivac has a lot more road data than OSM so it shouldnt be
hard to preprocess it.

[talk-ph] City in well city names

2010-02-24 Thread Andre Marcelo-Tanner
Yes interesting topic. In my research on this for the OSM page, I found
that its subjective to include the City in the name, usually it makes
sense to include it for places where there is a province or municipality
of the same name.
technically speaking the official name is 'Lungsod ng Manila etc'
which should translate to City of
So yes including City in the Name is the right way to do it, but its not
necessary in regular real life applications.

Any other opinions?

Hi,

Ok so we finally have all the incorporators and officers together.
Eugene agreed to be President, and I will be Tres/Sec. So from everyone
who agreed to be an incorporator here I need the following information
to proceed with the preparation of papers:

- Full Name
- Address
- Cedula (Community Tax Certificate, usually costs PHP5 at the Barangay,
if a Corporation might cost PHP500 at mayors office)
- TIN (Tax ID or Passport if Foreign or not in the country)

Once I have this information we can proceed with the signing which may
be complicated because of our locations but not impossible. The sooner I
get this information the better :)

[talk-ph] Draft MoA between the OSM-F and any possible localchapter

2009-08-06 Thread Andre Marcelo-Tanner
What would be the point of paying? It says a local chapter can use the
logo and osm domain and promote osm. Isnt counter-productive to charge
an organization which wants to help improve OSM locally by its own
resources/costs? A per member fee is rather high, maybe a low chapter
fee would be ok, but what do they need the fees for anyway? Its just
like a way of saying this one is officially recognized. Also for paying
that fee what does the local chapter get in return? Do we get like gps
units, documents, paraphernalia? Stuff that helps us? Anyway I know its
all still under discussion but I think it wouldnt be worth paying unless
there is just reason and the members here agree to it.

Maning declined for president, how bout for secretary/treasurer. Essentially
theyre the signing person, sign this doc etc, this form, secretary certificate,

Who would like to be President? president should probably be someone who has
the orgs best interests at heart, is active in the community and wants to
lead/direct OSM Philippines on to greater things. I know a few here who would
fit that profile, nominations anyone?
BTW you can be an incorporator if you are not a Filipino citizen, you just cant

2009-07-19 Thread Andre Marcelo-Tanner
Was wondering when you guys wanted to do this, most people are
favorable, not everyone answered even after multiple queries so the best
I can say is that those who post most here are for it. As for the OSM-F
doc, its just a doc, we dont need to have something like that, it would
be something to sign between the org and osm-f if osm-f requires it for
them to recognize us as an official member.

If we want to move forward with this, we need 5 signatories as is
required to setup a corporation. What this requires is a Cedula and TIN
and that you sign the corporate documents. Also we need board members,
specifically a treasurer who signs the bank titf and a corporate
secretary who signs all the other stuff. Treasurer and Secretary can be
one person but may not be the president I believe. So far we'll sign as
1 incorporator, please put your name in the list if you wish to be an
incorporator and or if you wish to be board member or wish to nominate
someone for the board, I nominate Maning for President :)

of you: Maning, Eugene, Ian, Rally, Neil, Ed, and the
photographer guy
from the Inquirer whose name I forgot (sorry!) and the family
members
who were there. It was fun, exciting, and also a great learning
experience. This is only the beginning and I know we'll be able
to do
more events to bring OSM Philippines to a wider audience and map
more of
the Philippines than anyone else could have imagined.

 Best Regards,

 Andre

[talk-ph] OSM Programmer

2009-04-27 Thread Andre Marcelo-Tanner
Hi all,

I wanted to create an online PHP application using OSM data but not the
simple slippy map type, this one would require manipulation of the raw
osm data, and like adding points of interest etc from a database. Is
there anyone here who has the skills and is looking for some work?

Thanks,

Andre

Re: [talk-ph] just a thought OSM Philippines mini-conference

2009-04-09 Thread Andre Marcelo-Tanner
Sure what do we need here, I have no problem discussing Boracay though
it might be more fun to have Jim join in and explain his 'fun' adventure
of mapping Boracay :)

Is there a way to measure distance in OSM, like say how many KM would
all the streets around the makati CBD be?

[talk-ph] App for Black Berry 9000

2009-03-25 Thread Andre Marcelo-Tanner
I have a BB Bold 9000 and was wondering if anyone had some suggestions
as to what is the best app to use for it for viewing OSM and with the
most features and probably free? :) There's so many apps I dont know
which to choose.

Re: [talk-ph] OSM Philippines legal entity (was OSM Philippines meet-up)

2009-02-10 Thread Andre Marcelo-Tanner
Hi,

Just want to clarify the costs of setting up a nonProfit organization
are not prohibitive, it is only the foundation type which requires a 1
million peso bank deposit, but a type of Misc. Activities club or
business non profit org has no large fees or requirements. Paperwork is
numerous but really just requires a printer and a lot of paper. :)
