Re: [Talk-us] ARNOLD highway data
Alex, Thanks for sharing. I pulled the data for Washington State. Looking at the data suggests we need to get better definition of the fields. There are a number of fields that appear interesting but I have no clue as to what they mean. Some interesting examples, Toll_Type, HOV Type, Truck_VN, and Route_Sign. A search of the HPMS Field Manual found more information that I could ever want! It tooks some search just to figure out that AADT (traffic counts I think) isn't something that we tag. The routes information is very interesting. It would be interesting to compare to our route relations. I would suggest that we invite someone from US DOT to join us on a video chat to help us better understand the ARNOLD database. From there we might look at where we could use the data as a cross check. For example, lane count. FYI - For those inclined, I'd suggest just pulling 2012. It appears that 2011 is just an older version of 2012. It does contain OSM relevant data. This blog post goes back to Thomas Roff from DOT reaching out to OSM US to explore areas of mutual benefit. The directions Martijn and I discussed with him were a) listening to OSM changes to help improve the ARNOLD dataset (with or without a previous import of ARNOLD data) - a little bit like this is set up for NYC http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/lxbarth/diary/23588 b) using OSM software for data management Martijn, Thomas - please add where I missed something. Both are blue sky ideas and wouldn't be executed by OpenStreetMap US as this is not our place. I'm sharing this here for everybody's consideration and comments. http://openstreetmap.us/2014/12/arnold-for-osm/ Cheers - Alex -- Alex Barth Vice President OpenStreetMap United States Inc. ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us -- @osm_seattle osm_seattle.snowandsnow.us OpenStreetMap: Maps with a human touch ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

HPMS was developed from an engineering perspective and speaks in a language that only Civil Engineers understand. I will be happy to help you through video chats, webinar or other medium. And only a civil engineer would want to understand it. I appreciate the offer to help out on the meta data. What we might ignore may be useful. I should also mention that I am about to post the 2013 version. HPMS deals with annual submittals by State DOTs. We want to transition the system to a more transactional way of life in the future but we are fighting tradition every step of the way. You mean that someone else fights change besides OSM?
