Re: Personal YouTube Videos

Laphroaig, Mossy! Oh, is that why tater referred to himself as
peaty? It all comes full circle, I thought that was a peaty-ato type
of thing, but it is a peat-type of thing. Anyhow, that is some tasty
whiskey! I myself, enjoy the good stuff whenever I can, but I always
have a bottle of Canadian, American-style whiskey around, just about 7
and a half years old. You know the type, it's red.

Re: Personal YouTube Videos

2009-04-22 Thread sgarrity

Woodford Reserve is another good bourbon and my current favorite.
I'm about to head out on vacation but maybe when I get back I'll crack
open the bottle of JW Blue and record the Teetotallers (aka,
Temperance) Reel.

The mandolin I'm playing is a Kimble A-0. Although it's outfitted
like an A4. Waverly tuners, James TP, triple binding.
I've had it for a few months and just got it back from a fresh set up
by Will. It's a really cool mandolin with its own sound.
The Red Diamond A5 that's in a couple of my videos was a trade that I
got last summer. I traded it off for a guitar last fall because I
already had my ff hole bases covered with my Heiden A5. I'm down to
the Heiden and Kimble and that should hold me for a while!!

Woodford good stuff; same with Knob Creek 100 proof thoughme and
my band mates have taken a shine to Irish whiskey...a real fine one is
Red Breast...give it a try; I'd put it up there with Jameson 18 but
quite a bit less expensive

When it comes to beer I'm with Tater; those Trappist monks sure have
had it down for 500 years or so :)

Re: Personal YouTube Videos

2009-03-02 Thread Don Grieser

The mandolin is by Joe Campanella Cleary of www.campanellastrings.com.
It's his Due (Italian for 2 point) model. He builds them violin
style with the overhanging top and back plates. He's apprenticed with
Lawrence Smart, studied and built violins/fiddles, and he's really
developed his own style. Great value in mandolins.

So the Potentater of this forum suggested I post something about my
mandolin as it is a bit of an unusual beast and he thought some folks
would be interested. I call it a Larry Loar or the Frankenloar...
cuz
it looks like Lloyd's lab experiment. It is actually a Lloyd Loar
mandola that someone had the brilliant idea of converting into an
F5
mandolin. As one luthier put it...Boy, somebody went to a lot of
work to ruin a perfectly good Loar mandola!
As best as forensics can reconstruct the crime... they took a bandsaw
and cut the sides down from the depth of a mandola (around 2) to the
depth of an F5 (about 1.25). Then they took the neck off and cut
that down to the proper length with headstock intact and created a
new
fingerboard with the appropriate scale length, frets, etc. It was
then reassembled, lifted up into a category 5 thunderstorm and... it
is ALIVE! my creature is ALIVE! (ok... the thunderstorm is dramatic
license on my part)
In spite of its freakish lineage... it is a fantastic sounding and
playing instrument. Does it sound like a loar? I dunno... cuz it's
the only one I've played. Does it sound better than any other mando
I've been around? Yep. You can hear it on my earlier you tube post

Re: Personal YouTube Videos

2009-02-25 Thread Robin Gravina
funny you should say that: I had my ipod on alphabetical order today and
listened to 4 versions of 'you can't be satisfied that way'. First up was a
version with exactly one of those arpeggioed solos on the mando, and then
Monroe and Doc Watson. Guess which one caused the thunderclouds to open and
the Gods to cry, and which one reminded me of a piece of bread soaked in
milk...

On Tue, Feb 24, 2009 at 7:10 PM, sec...@bellsouth.net wrote:

I'm more than willing to elaborate on this one.

I was at a jam recently with a local musician that has some...local
gravitas...and he took a moment to note that I play pretty good, but I need
more meat on the bone. I love clear advice of this kind. He tells me I
need to learn some scales and arpeggios, you see. The idea of improvising
from chord shapes, ala Bill Monroe, must indeed be insane.

I did take the criticism, and actually went home, broke out some books and
spent a few days wondering what in the hell I was doing. It took me totally
off the rails, and needlessly. The method I had been using was working--and
working pretty well. Big Indian Blues is a tough one to use as as example
since it is almost a thing in itself, but I think I've actually developed at
least an even hand at improvising in the Monroe style...or maybe a
 Steve-Monroe style.

I'm more than willing to take criticism and learn from it---but what it
came down to was a stylistic difference. I don't particularly care for the
modern mandolin style that seems to be on most bluegrass recordings. I don't
want to play endless scales. Still though, the little scene sort of knocked
my confidence in what I was doing off-kilter. I wonder if anyone else has
 had this experience?

I'm not the only one that's ever gotten an airing-out from this guy---he
does it so well. Oh, if only we all could be so good that we were able to
help others like this. Incidentally, after I bought my first mandolin (a
warp-necked Johnson whose binding exploded off the neck the first time I
strung it with medium gauge strings) I took a couple of lessons from this
guy...and didn't go back for anymore.

I guess it didn't kill me so much that I didn't buy a new mandolin
 yesterday

I love the fake nose and glasses idea. (When one of my college

wearing them.) Is there a Mister Potatohead version of the fake nose

Re: Personal YouTube Videos

I've done a handful of videos now and people seem to like the videos
that show more than just a headless mando player. It's a little more
enjoyable for the viewer if they can see all of you.

I'm working on trying to get three tunes recorded and posted. Hope to
have them all done by the end of the week but we'll have to wait and
see. They are:

Dusty Miller
Monroe's Farewell to Longhollow
Woodchopper's Reel (or Breakdown)

Feel free to post what you're working on or pick one of those tunes
and give it a whirl.

Whaddya think?

I too am with the no face group. I tend to think my mando is nicer to
look at, anyway. I don't know how to make videos so not sure I can
participate but it will be lots of fun to see what others are doing.
I do like to see other folks faces, just to see if what I do with mine

Personal YouTube Videos

2009-02-07 Thread sgarrity

Howdy All--

I thought I'd toss this idea out there. I've gotten into doing short
YouTube videos of the tunes I'm working on. Over on the Comando
mailing list, we;ve started doing a Monroe Tune of the Week. So as I
get them under my fingers I'm doing videos of them. Now keep in mind,
I'm purely an amateur hack. But I have a lot of fun playing this
music we all enjoy.

So I'm going to post the link here so you can have a listen if you so
desire. I'd love to hear feedback from all the talented pickers that
take part in this forum. As for my playing style, it's kind of a
mix. I love the Monore tunes and style and I try to work some of it
in but I'm certainly not trying to sound just like him. I also play a
fair amount of old-time tunes.

I think it would be a fun learning experience if a good number of us
would post a YouTube video on occassion. I know some of you out there
already have videos up but it might be nice to have them all linked in
one thread. Nothin' but encouragement and constructive criticism
though. Tater..whaddya think?

Re: Personal YouTube Videos

2009-02-07 Thread mistertaterbug

Shaun,
Yessir, I think you've got an excellent idea. It would help keep all
of us on our toes and looking for material. Plus, I think we'd learn
more about what each of us sounds like stylistically and more than
likely even improve as a group. What is your thought on material? Do
we look at doing a group tune or do we post the latest thing we're
working on or what?

I don't reckon I'll be disowning anybody. I've probably got more warts
to work out than anybody else here, that is, if I expect to continue
playing music for a living.
