2005-01-20 Thread Dierk Haasis
Hello Michael!

On Thursday, January 20, 2005 at 8:26:18 AM you wrote:

They promised working IMAP and the working NFS for v2 ...
Now I payed for v3 (for the same features they promised/advertised in
v2) - and still bugs, bugs, bugs.

Don't you think I have the right for a working version?

But you agree, that IMAP is one of the advertised features for v2 and
 v3?

If so, you agree that the customer expects this features to work. And
you agree that the customers wants fixes for not working functions
in the first line - not new gaming gimmicks.

Apart from Leif declaring this thread DH'ed, I chime in with the
biggest mantra of shareware:

Try, try, try ... before you buy.

I've written it - in this very thread and every time this discussion
comes up (about every five minutes since nobody has anything else to
do nowadays): Don't buy promises. There's only one exception, found on
carnivals and circuses, palm readers and their kind.

Sorry, but i read the DH-message afterwards.

I chime in with the biggest mantra of shareware:

Try, try, try ... before you buy.

As you said. You can *try*. But only try. In 30 days you are not able
to see every aspect and not every issue comes up because you just
don't know the software enough or get everything to work in this time.
In 30 days you just get a sneak preview of what you'll get after you
paid for it.

But it's right. Never trust a software company ;-)

Hallo tbbeta,

since yesterday the latest beta tends to crash with me everytime I fire it
up. Nothing worked. No repair or modify option. Just uninstall and
  reinstall worked.
After that, I tried the latest beta again of course, but it still crashes.
But luckily I could now easily change between exe-files.

OK, it'd be nice if someone gave us the occasional update on what was
happening, but they don't /have/ to; for what it's worth I don't even
believe they've a moral obligation to. They're going to tell us when
they tell us. It may be they don't give us an update until they
actually release the next version. Whatever.

I will give a little technical update. The batskin.ini, which was a
temporary glyph definition file, will no longer be read, the new file
which will persist will be batskin.xml; the format of the language
file for the people who translate The Bat! will change, the menu and
the toolbars will be customisable; shortcut editor will be altered;
some other bugs are fixed in the meanwhile; the folder tree and the
message list (tree in threading mode) will be completely different,
much much better than the current tree; etc.

Feel free to ask questions.

GnuPG: UID not accepted

2005-01-20 Thread Peter Meyns
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi all,

I use GnuPG and have a free form primary user ID, i.e., just the name,
nothing else. The sub-UIDs contain the email addresses. The Bat! only
accepts the first email address for her implemented GPG use. So, if I
try to sign this message with ctrl+shift+S as I prefer, it
produces

,-
| gpg: no default secret key: secret key not available
| gpg: [stdin]: clearsign failed: secret key not available
`-

although the list address is a valid UID on my key. And yes, I have
set my key as the default in gpg.conf.

Now as a workaround, I use GPGshell to sign a message to this list,
which works without a problem. But I can't use PGP/MIME.

So, if anyone feels concerned about this, please add a note to my bug
report at https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4171
Thank you. :-)

You do have a sig delimiter, but please remove the sig delimiter right
above the AVG message, or turn that off completely.

TheBat uses the last sig delimiter to trim a message. That means the
AVG part disappears but your actual signature stays.

Thanks.

Re: Update on the Status of Software

2005-01-20 Thread Leif Gregory
Hello Cees,

Thursday, January 20, 2005, 2:01:12 PM, you wrote:
C no... why should I?

Let's see. (for reference, please read the welcome message you were
sent when you subscribed).

1. You are violating section G of the list rules which state that
you sig should be about 4-6 lines. Yours is 13 lines. But, I wasn't
even modding you on your sig length, only that you should remove
the cutmark between your main sig and the AVG message. I usually
don't mod much on sig lengths unless it's really excessive

2. Certifying an outgoing message as virus free is pretty irrelevant.
There isn't a single anti-virus application out there that catches
all viruses. Especially if it's a brand new virus. Therefore,
telling the recipient that your message is virus free instills a
   false sense of security.

However, to be honest, I really don't care if you include it or
not, that's not why I mentioned what I did. However, by including
it, you add three lines to your sig not to mention the three blank
lines before it plus the line with the redundant sig delimiter.. A
total of seven lines you *could* remove which would bring your
   signature to within list rules.

C apparently it does. why is that my fault? I'd say that The Bat!
C should handle this particular issue in a different way. As do most
C emailprograms as I remember

You'll get no argument from me that TheBat should handle it better.
However it doesn't and that's why *you* need to take care of it. This
is the point and only the point I was modding you on.

This also falls under list rule G.

C Secondly I've been waiting to answer you ...

I certainly do appreciate it. However, as moderators, we never take
off the asbestos suits. :-)

C because I had to calm down. BECAUSE I think you are nitpicking!!!

There's nothing nitpicky about it. They *are* the list rules which
have been around since 1996/97 and revised over the years as needed.
They are neither antiquidated nor irrelevant as they follow common
Netiquette guidelines which also have been around for ages and are
revised accordingly.

C Is this ALL that is bothering you? I'd say that the way people
C address each other is a way more important item to follow. And
C please don't come with the argument of message sizes.

Primarily it's messy. When someone replies to your messages, they must
manually cut out your topmost signature. Don't you think it's kind of
rude to force people who wish to follow list rules about trimming
their replies by making them fix something *every* single time which
you could fix just *once* by removing three characters from above the
AVG message.

And as much as you may not want to believe it, there have been and
still are (as far as I know) people subscribed to TB lists who do pay
for their bandwidth by the byte/KB.

At any rate, the point is that you are violating list rules. I didn't
even send you an official moderation message as you were doing most of
it right.

To show you why the cutmark issue is important, I did not remove your
sig manually, so below is what everyone who replies to your messages
has to cut out by hand.

If you wish to continue this, please do so at:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you.

Just to pick you up *right* there my friend, there is an extremely
good reason why TB does it the way it does it and why it is not wrong.
Far from it. It is absolutely correct. Imagine a digest with multiple
messages and multiple signatures. TB *has* to consider only the final
cutmark otherwise all text below the first cutmark would be displayed
using the signature font / style / colour (which in my instance is
grey). Digests become hard to read and hard to reply to.

I felt this issue should be made a little more clear on the list and,
as you say, further replies to the list mods address.

CVS server, so you need an account there. Additionally you need a CVS
client program (I use WinCVS for these purposes).

LG To show you why the cutmark issue is important, I did not remove

No big deal with that. I already justify all the text and that really

Netiquette exists for the same reason it's considered impolite to eat

netiquette, or still can't seem to figure it out even after tons of

Multipart message question

2005-01-20 Thread James Senick
Hello tbbeta,

I'm really not sure if this is a beta issue or not. I receive
Web statistics reports that are multipart html messages with
embedded images.

Forwarding these messages leaves the recipient without images
since the embedded images are sent as part_01.jpg, part_02.jpg,
etc.. Also, double-clicking the html attachment renders it in
the browser without images for the same reason. Lastly, the
same happens when archiving with MailBag and attempting to open
it in a browser.

Is there something I am doing wrong or is this a TB issue. All
the procedures I mentioned above used to work fine.

Aren't semantics great?

Merriam Webster:

Noun:
a leader who makes use of popular prejudices and false claims and
promises in order to gain power

The next time you decide to hang a characterization on someone, you
might want to make sure you actually know what it is your calling
them. One of the reasons for list rule B.3.

Isn't it really neat how all these rules seem to define a polite list.
Now if people just abided by them, then we wouldn't need moderators.

GF I meant it because of your concern with people paying for dl'ed
GF info. We're talking about a few extra bytes, not a huge amount of
GF data.

Yeah, it's kinda like that whole straw that broke the camels back
thing. Really, the only reason I brought it up as because he said not
to. If you really care about it take a look at the archives. There's a
pretty long thread concerning the whole subject and it was even
participated in by those people who paid by the byte/KB.

GF Quoting Dierk Haasis (1949378823.20050118105056):
GF As I always say, smileys don't make it better. :))

It wasn't meant to be a nice message. When you jump on a moderator for
making a moderatorial decision you're essentially saying the rules
don't matter. In the long history of these lists, only one person has
ever gotten banned. He didn't agree with the list rules either. We're
still here, he's not.

If you don't like the list rules, you can go elsewhere. There's many
other lists that might cater more to your liking. You could probably
even top-post if you really wanted to.
