Memory usage

2005-05-10 Thread Martin Webster on tbbeta
Hello tbbeta,

This morning my server sent an unusually large log file (30,000 lines
~ 2.6M) causing TB! to use 370M memory/VM. After switching to another
folder memory usage stays at this level and VM continues to grow.
Memory isn't freed after deleting/purging the message. The only
solution is restarting TB!

I exported the message and repeated again with IMAP and local folder;
same result.

Surely TB! should handle this better?

OK, so I usually download POP messages instead of using the

But sometimes there is a 3MB I just don't care to download. I see the
progress in the Download Messenger and it takes forever on my dial-up
connection. I wish there where a button skip and go to the next

 Seconders?

this is impossible using POP3 protocol, when is downloading process
started, no other commands are possible.

What could be possible is to abort the POP3 connection, remember the id of
the large message, reconnect and skip the large message.
This is not very friendly but it will work.

Now I have bat-file to change this setting and some others too.
Restarting TheBat is required.
It works fine for me.

My wish was much greater - account profiler.
I wish add two-three profiles that stores settings for accounts:
Periodical checking
Transport
Visibility
Connection
here may be some other setting...

And of course - easy ways to switch accounts profiles.

But now bat-files do it, and I have only one minus - need restarting

So I'll be glad to further developing other cool features instead this
one.

Nevertheless I support your wish.

FG was getting into an awful hole trying to do implement what you were

Ok.

FG (can you imagine what an international corporation's directory would
FG look like if all employees had the rights to add their personal
FG address book into the (globally searchable) directory)

Yep, that's right. I know that giving write access to LDAP for everyone
may be a fatal idea, but personally I'd love to have an option to modify
the contents of directory when writing or reading e-mail with my choice
of e-mail client :-)

I know that implementing support for what we're asking for is a bit
tricky, because there's no single fixed server and scheme configuration
developers could rely on and write the LDAP support only against to it
- TB! needs to be able to deal with different server-side
applicatitions, configurations and user data. In other word, the LDAP
support needs to be very comprehensive, which means a lot of work to do.

For example different minor versions of OpenLDAP daemons seems to behave
differently (I administrate a couple of LDAP servers), because their
schema definitions differs. And there are quite some other LDAP
implementations on the market too e.g. Novell's, Netscape's, Microsoft's
to mention a couple of them.

In addition to that, people turns out to want to use different kind of
sets of ObjectClasses to represent a contact. This makes implementation
again a lot more difficult.

Of course RIT could fix a single configuration and tell their clients
that this is what we actually support, but it's still quite a job to do.

Basically writing an LDAP support should only be following carefully the
LDAP specifications, but practically there are lots of things that makes
writing an implementation that supports most of the configurations out
there hard or even impossible.

Thanks, Tero

Overlap of newly created shortcut influence

2005-05-10 Thread Allie Martin
Hi all,

I made some single key shortcuts for a few of the right click context
menu options in the message list.

Of course, these will work only with the message list in focus. In an
attempt to reduce this restriction, I created the same shortcuts for the
corresponding options in the 'Message' menu for the main windows 'Main
Menu'.

Unfortunately, these shortcuts are still active when I'm working in the
editor. This seems to be buggy behaviour since there are no such options
in the menus for the editor. Why are the shortcuts working when the
editor is in focus? They're working like hotkeys when they shouldn't be.

Examples are:

Go to next unread: 'N'
Reply to message: 'R'
Forward message: 'F'

These options aren't present in the editor menu, though if I define
those shortcuts in the main toolbars main menu, they're still working in
the editor. There should be a similar restriction as with the message
lists menu. They shouldn't be global as they seem to be.

Are the added buttons to toolbars working?

2005-05-10 Thread Allie Martin
Hi all,

I was just experimenting and added the 'Edit Colour Groups' option to
the main toolbar. The button appeared with a text label. However,
nothing happens when I press it.

To see if this was a problem on other toolbars, I tried creating the
same button for the editors toolbar and got a crash. The usual 'TB! has
encountered a problem and needs to close..' error accompanied by AV
popups each time I hit the OK button on the error popup.

I couldn't get all the AV addresses since the generic popup error window
would overlap the AV popup and after moving it out of the way, a white
spot would be left over the AV popup, obscuring the addresses involved.
I got one of them though.

RC/5: occasionally POP3-Fetch-Task-Hang

2005-05-10 Thread Carsten Meyer
Hello Batters,

I am using RC/5 right now and experience problems while fetching mails
via POP3 from different servers.

Sometimes the Mail-Fetch-Task hangs at 100% and the downloaded mails do
not appear in the mailfolders. The log stays at ANTIVIRUS - Check of
incoming POP3-messages for viruses (roughly translated from German).

So there might be a problem either on TheBat!-Side not obeying the
Plugin-Rules or the plugin not working correctly.

I use a plugin for Bitdefender lite from here

http://www.thebatworld.de/modules/download/index.php?op=viewlinkdetailslid=216ttitle=Bitdefender_Light_7.2_AV_Plugin_1.0

The homepage-link is not filled, so I guess there is none. :-)

Hope, that someone can confirm the behaviour or enlighten me. ;-)

PS: I cc'ed the feedback-adress mentioned within the plugin-archive.

Please include a signature delimiter in your messages. This consists
of a dashdashspacereturn, i.e., a '-- ' by itself on a line.
This allows your readers, when replying, to quote your text without
the signature and list footers since everything below and including
the sig delimiter is excluded when quoting.

You can easily automate this process by including the sig delimiter in
your templates.

Even if you barely have a signature to speak of, that doesn't make any
difference to whether or not you need a cut mark. You are being
courteous to other readers since at least three lines of text is added
to your signature by the list server.

That may be the case... I'm simply asking for clarity. However,
testing a nightly build (or otherwise) in order help with a specific

the current beta. Unless specifically asked to test an alternative

the version identified in every message footer; Current beta is 3.5

RC5: AVs when editing View Modes

2005-05-10 Thread MAU
Hello all,

I've been running RC5 for 3 days for my normal work quite smoothly, but
just now I had some AVs.

I wanted to add a Filter to one of my view modes but, after making the
change, I decided not to do so and hit Cancel. When doing this I got
this AV:

---
The Bat!
---
Access violation at address B853531E. Read of address B853531E.
---
OK
---

After OKing this I clicked Cancel on the Prefernces window and then I
got this one:

---
The Bat!
---
Access violation at address 0034. Read of address 0034.
---
OK
---

OKing this would just lead a new AV with same values and this endlessly
repeated until I killed TB with Task Manager.

After re-starting TB I can't reproduce the AVs.

Hello Thomas!

On Tuesday, May 10, 2005, 10:53 AM, you wrote:

I can't find this temp file name.

Attached is a .png from my default word processor, Open Office (but
it's always been like this when I open in Word, also).

I did not save this attachment, which came in a couple of hours ago
from my sister. (Her school principal is retiring, and she's written a
poem honoring him, to be read at the district-wide awards banquet.)

A mere double-click brought it up in Open Office for me, as you see,
with its original file name--on the Windows bar.

It has always been like this with TB.

I guess I'm dense, but I don't understand what you are saying, as it
applies to what I am experiencing. Could you explain further?

RC5: clicking a mailto URL does not select default account

2005-05-10 Thread MAU
Hello all,

I've searched TBBeta for the last few months and I could not find a
report about this.

I have umpteen accounts and only one (TB only allows one) is selected as
Default for mailto URLs. However, if I browse the web while TB is
opens and click on a mailto URL, the editor will open fine but _not_ for
the default account, it will open for the account that is selected in
the Account/Folder tree.

Can anyone confirm?

Preliminary TB! Help File PDF

2005-05-10 Thread Dennis Hays
Batty Folk

As promised, I have uploaded a very preliminary PDF file (04
April 2005) showing some of the changes and additions to the
Help file Dierk Haasis and I have been working on.

This file shows new content towards the front of the PDF and
older, pre-existing content further back.

It's approximately 851kb and in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. There
are no security options enabled (as far as I know) and you can
feel free to print it, if desired (211 pages).

Re: Current version?

2005-05-10 Thread Allie Martin
Hi Tony,
  On 10/05/2005 02:35 PM +0100, you wrote:
 Company policy or your choice?
No. Not company policy. I run my personal machine at work so I install
on it what I like. The sysadmins like me anyway, since they know I
effectively keep out the viruses and such.

If your choice, can I be so bold as to ask why? (Albeit I think I
know the answer).
It's IMAP. All about IMAP.
I have a fairly slow connection at work and my battle with TB! at work
was an epic one that I lost miserably. I gave in and used ThunderBird
for a while. I now use Mulberry which offers me a tranquil IMAP
experience at work. It works very well on slower connections.

TB!, barring the AV's, and now, only occasional glitches in IMAP, works
well enough on a fast connection to be usable. With a slower
connection, I'd be waiting too much. Glitches in TB! often means a
rebuilding of the message base for a folder which often goes awry on my
slower connection. A cache rebuild at home is a snap. However, at work,
I'd sit there waiting for a folders cache to be rebuilt and wait for a
looong time, only to see that it's being done in a corrupted
fashion. Only a cache re-flush and TB! restart seem to help. I then
have to wait for the cache to build properly on the TB! restart. I
would have to wait for long periods for other operational reasons too.
Again, these long waits amounts to a few seconds on a fast connection.
Those days of anquish and waiting are over. It's Mulberry at work for
me.

With Mulberry, I can start browsing a folder after only the info for
listing 20 messages in a folder has been retrieved. TB! needs to list
all messages before you can read one. I can retrieve one attachment
among others that are within a single message. TB! will retrieve all
the attachments before you can view one of them. IOW's, Mulberry
already masters the ability to retrieve just what is needed to be able
to read mail or work with attachments. So Mulberry seems fast though
it's likely slower than TB! in querying the server and retrieving data.
It's just that it retrieves so much less data overall, that the
experience is faster.
