Consolidating Accounts

2001-11-10 Thread Keith Russell

Hello, Batters.

I'm still looking for creative ideas on how to archive old messages
  8-).

In the meantime, though, I have another question.

Through the years that I've been using The Bat!, I've had to switch
ISPs several times. I've also tried out several free email servers
for shorter periods of time. Some of the messages in the various
accounts are unique, of course, but some are duplicates, due to the
fact that I would sometimes receive messages in two accounts
simultaneously so that I could compare them, or when I thought one
  was having a problem.

The problem is that the messages in most of these separate accounts
really belong together. I have used the same folders and filters in
each account; only the source was different. I think that in the
future, I will rename my current ISP to Main, and when I switch, I
will just change the settings on Main and continue to use it. That
will ensure that most messages come to the same account.

Right now, however, I have hundreds or thousands of messages in each
of several different accounts (I save a lot of messages 8-~), and in
each account, sorted into 30 or 40 folders. I would like to bring
them all together into the same account.

What do you think would be the best way to do this? I'm currently
thinking that within each account, I could drag the messages from
each folder into the Inbox; then I could drag all the Inbox messages
into the Main account's Inbox; I could then apply my filters; and
finally, I could remove duplicates from all folders in Main. This, I
think, would be easier than having to drag messages from each
individual folder into the corresponding Main folder. Or would it?

What does everyone think? Does anyone have a better idea?

  Thanks again for your help.

No, they won't. It is not intended that they do. This would just copy
one of Outlook's security holes. Why would we want that? Most people
avoid Outlook because of this problem.

Another of Outlook's problems is to send HTML messages, which is an
oxymoron. HTML is Hyper Text Markup Language, and the proper protocol
fro Hyper Text is the Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (http - You notice
that this abbreviation has something to do with websites rather than

Exceptions for Newsletters are acceptable (IMHO), but why on earth did

Re: Transferring to new Windows XP computer

night I decided I've had enough, and today I ordered a new computer.
It will be delivered on Friday.

So I need to transfer The Bat! to the new computer. My understanding
 of the procedure is:

 On the old computer:
 1. Using the Maintenance Centre, back up everything.
 2. Export the registry keys (or are they included in the backup made
in step 1?).

Just save out the part of the registry needed.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/RIT right click on the RIT folder and select
export. To put it back in the registry of the new machine just double click
the icon of the file you saved out, you'll be asked if you want to copy it
to the new registry, just select yes.

 On the new computer:
 1. Install The Bat!.
 2. Double-click on the .reg files to import the registry keys.
 3. Using the Maintenance Centre, restore everything.

Yep, spot on and works a treat. FWIW in the last month I've transported TB
and several thousand messages between a Laptop with Win98se, My own machine
that had WinME and I've just updated it to XP without problems.

 Some questions:
 1. I understand WinXP and Win98 have different registry structures.
Does that affect this procedure?

Not in my experience.

 2. Does it matter what order I do the steps on the new computer?

Shouldn't think so, but I added the registry entry first.

 3. Currently I have The Bat! program on C:\, most account folders in
one directory on D:\, and one account in a different directory on
D:\ (it makes sense to me). Do I have to recreate the same
structure on the new computer?

 4. I'm considering taking the D:\ drive out of the old computer and
installing it in the new one (assuming WinXP authentication allows
that). That way I get more storage in the new computer, and have
less hassle moving my data. If I do this, can I simply install The
Bat! and import the registry keys to recreate my setup?

 5. Would it be better not to transfer the registry keys? Instead, just
install the program, recreate the accounts, restore the message
base, and re-register (I've forgotten my password for the
registration key).

Can't personally see the point of doing it that way.

I forgot my password ages ago so that's part of the reason I save out the
registry entry.

Couldn't agree more. I hate the dam things with a passion. Sadly AOL V6+
users can't do anything about it using the supplied software. And trying to
tell technically clueless users about not sending HTML is a waste of time in
my experience. Why o why HTML is enabled in Outlook Express by default is
beyond me.

Is there any filters i could use to remove .html messages from
incoming emails... My editor is set not to show the HTML message
automatically, but its still annoying to even have the attachment
 there.

I don't have a problem with there being HTML there, IMHO deleting it is a
waste of time as I have 160gig of storage on this PC, plus most of the
offending lists are set to auto delete after a set number of days anyway.

The only thing I find irritating is that if a message contains an HTML part,
then that is displayed first. I'd rather have it display the plain text version
and flick to the HTML part if needed (unlikely but possible). There might be
a way of setting this, though I must admit I've not really looked into it.

Personally I'm not keen on there being a way to automatically remove HTML
attachments as some of the groups and people I correspond with often include
HTML examples for building web sites, but I do think that there ought to be
a way of doing this for those that feel they need such an option.

this was standard for The Bat! when first loaded -- that you get yellow
exclamation points instead of images. But I can't get the images to
load in any of the programs viewers under any conditions. Is there a
workaround for this, or will all of my HTML mail be laden with yellow
exclamation marks? Thanks in advance for any tips or

I don't know about this. Can you view the message when you're looking
at the source. (Press F9) Or do you see the message when you have
the headers visible too? (Press CtrlShiftK)

TB doesn't show images in html that aren't included in the message. A
lot of newsletters are sent with a load of images, that aren't
included in the message, but only the url of the picture is included.
Since this saves a lot of bandwidth during the sending, it's common
practice. It is however a safety risk when viewing the message.
Especially when you're reading the message with some software that
acts like it's opening a local file.
If you want to view the message as it is intended, you should open the
html attachment with your browser. That's more secure.
This method of sending messages is also a way of telling how many
people (and from what ip-addresses) are receiving/reading your
mailinglist, hence it's a privacy issue too.

Re: CC hanging

2001-11-10 Thread Jan Rifkinson

Hello Roberto

At 5:24 PM on Saturday, November 10, 2001 you wrote the
following on the posted subject 'CC hanging':

Roberto [...] I'm going to try out TB Beta, as Thomas mentioned
Roberto the problem is already fixed there. [...]

FYI, in the same msg that you responded to I mention
that that I use beta 10 the CC sometimes hangs so I
don't think the problem has been taken care of.
