Most of the time you won't find any such information in an email's

Right now I have the suspicion that it is the way your computer name

1. Exit TB!

Some email programs' [Reply] don't address the Reply-To: in themessage being read

2003-01-22 Thread Daniel Grunberg
I send out a once a week email newsletter that asks for a yes or no
response about attending this week's meeting of an organization. The
reply is to be sent to three addresses, so the newsletter's Reply-To:
includes the three addresses.

I tested the email by sending it to myself at an account where I read
mail with TheBat!, and to my Yahoo webmail account. I was gratified to
find that both TheBat! and Yahoo could [Reply] to my message.

Then I tested the message by sending it to our members. I found that
not all members could hit [Reply] and address the three members in my
message's Reply-To: . For example, AOL members address only me (the
sender) when they hit [Reply].

It tried including mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:[EMAIL PROTECTED] in
a message mto one of our AOL members and asking her to click on it.
The link didn't open a new message. I also tried sending her the same
link enclosed by , and that didn't work either.

Is there a way to include a mailto: (or equivalent) that will always
work? If it is, can I include the Subject: in one mailto: (or
equivalent), so I can click on one mailto: to answer yes, or a
second mailto: to answer no?

Thanks for your help.

I'm glad you were able to find the problem. I'd do a search through the
registry for your old name. You might also check your computer's name in
the network settings (but you probably already did that).

Perhaps your computer also resolves its own name using any of these

somewhere in some subdirectory of your computer's system directory.

As you said, you could try something with a mailto: link, but there's
no guarantee that that'll work, since a broken program can be broken
on lots of places.

However, I googled for 'RFC' and 'mailto' and was rewarded with this
link: http://ftp.ics.uci.edu/pub/ietf/uri/rfc2368.txt that taught me
the syntax of the mailto url.
It supports multiple addresses when they're separated with %2C
A header can be added with a question mark.
So your mailto: link would like like this:

mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED][EMAIL PROTECTED][EMAIL PROTECTED]?Subject=I%20would%20like%20to%20come

When clicked on it gives a proper message with TB, but I won't promise
anything about broken clients that can't even handle a Reply-To:
correctly.

More questions about this subject should go to tbot, I think, since
they're not really TB-related. ;-)

CompUSA, Circuit City, Fries, Best Buy, any place that sells
electrical goodies :) I use APC at home, and some large industrial
ones at work. The APC one runs for me just fine, with a 30min backup,
it has saved me plenty of times. Also if you're running windows, most
UPS systems provide a cable to allow you to get the UPS to shut your
PC down for you automatically on detection of a power outage, after X
mins (usually configurable). I think you can pick up a fairly
reasonable one for about $30-50, that'll give you 10 mins backup.

I recommend a change every 2 years, as the gel-cell batteries are
the same as used in alarm systems. recommended change interval
in that use is 2 years. Is your data as important as your

Printer?? NEVER hook up a LASER printer to a UPS, as the power
drain is too high! Inkjets are OK, as they draw less. The less
you have connected to the UPS the better. Usually only CPU and
Monitor. Just what is required to safely close all program
windows and save files. Then SHUT DOWN! It is also recommended
that you CYCLE the battery at least once every 6 months to
completely discharge it (to the point it shuts down the UPS) to
keep the battery 'active.' They don't have a 'memory' per se,
but they do require being exercised.

Ah, but there is a chance of a storm (imminently) cutting power
where Mary is, so I guess she must hope there is sufficient time
to charge before that happens! We shall see. The battery
charges at the same rate whether the UPS is being used or not, so
it really doesn't matter UNLESS there is a failure SOON :-)

Some of the LARGER UPS systems operate on the inverter (connverts
the battery DC 12V to AC 120V) at all times, so that there is NO
delay in switching over to backup power. There is a relay that
switches over (in milliseconds) in the smaller units. The delay
is not noticed by most systems, but larger power-hungry server
banks might be adversely affected.

I guess I have pontificated enough on this, so Mary . . GO GET
IT!! A 450VA unit should be fine for your use.

you only need a Backups Office 350 or 500. You just plug the printers into the SURGE

and Monitor, and the rest are SURGE protected slots, for printers,
scanners... that way, when the power goes out, you are only draining the
battery for the CPU and monitor.

Yes, of course I knew about TAB and SHIFT TAB. My problem is finding a
way (from a keyboard macro) to ensure that a certain tick box is
ticked (on?). For example, if I want to select (tick) Body I can use
Alt+B, but that will just toggle whatever the previous state is.

Ah yes. A plain ON, as opposed to a toggle. I thought it started with
a blank slate when you hit F7.

MAU For example, if I want to select (tick) Body I can use

Now there, I didn't know of shortcuts like that. You're teaching me

Maybe that one was staying set after you hit F7 another time. So,
you're right. I'm not sure.

Speaking of which, we could use a keypress that set focus on the main
window. The main or primary Bat window is split in three sections: the
folders, the list of messages, and the preview window. You can hit TAB
to advance focus to the next pane. But I know no way to fix focus on a
particular pane by any simple method or shortcut. I daresay it could
prove handy to be able to manoeuvre certain operations in advance,
automatically.

On this type of dialogs, when a tick box or radio button has an

toggles it.

Yes, it saves the last state, the state of the last search done. So, I

force an ON or OFF state. But I think it isn't possible.

All you guys and girls running out to get a UPS the above is something
you definitely want on a UPS.

A UPS is first and foremost meant to prevent you losing data with brown
and black outs. Therefore the PC should close itself down (after the
power has been gone for a short while), in a normal and controlled way
without losing data, when the power is gone.
Remember you might not be there to shut it down manually!!

The battery is also not (normally) there to let you work on for extended
period. If you want that you will have to pay big bucks and reserve
lots of space for the UPS, depending on how long you want to keep on
working after the power is gone.

A final note, printers, scanners and all nonessential equipment should
not be connected tot the UPS because it drains the battery. You could
consider connecting your telephone system to the UPS if you have one
that needs external power (think SOHO).

Price tip: Some companies sell used UPS equipment and there is lot
around for good price since the Internet bubble has blown :(
Ask for a minimum waranty on the batteries if you buy one used.
