Filters, Spam and Edits
Just in case I missed something, I'm wondering if there is a way to edit a received message Subject. I use SpamPal and it marks suspects with **SPAM** in the subject line. Sometimes the Bayesian filter is incorrect (we are both still learning) but when I move a clean email to an inbox it is forever branded SPAM. If I alter the tagline for spam in SpamPal options, I'm not sure the messages will be routed to the junk folder. I realize from reading some of the archives that editing a received message is for some reason controversial. But for cases like the one above, or when a sender neglects to put a subject line in; or in the message body when the formatting makes it difficult to read, it would be a great help to be able to edit. If there is now a way to do so I would be thrilled to learn how! Best wishes, -- Pat Newly registered! Under SpamPal Options/Message Tagging my preference is to *not* check Mark subject lines.. or Display X-SpamPal: header in subject lines. This way SpamPal puts the classification information in the message's hidden kludge area. I think it looks less tacky this way. If you create a filter in The Bat to look for ^X-SpamPal: SPAM (minus the quotes) in the kludge or anywhere you can move the messages to your spam folder automatically. Erroneously classified mail (if you have any) will still have the altered kludge, but it won't be in the Subject field which would look rather annoying. If you place your SpamPal filter after your mailing list filters, and your Known filter (people in your address books), I think you'll find little if any erroneously classified spam. You might get an occasional unrecognized spam that you can easily add to the Bayesian plug-in. I've been running SpamPal for a few months and honestly don't recall any mail erroneously classified as spam. I might get 1 or 2 unrecognized spam each week and average 45-50 spam/day. - -- Kevin Coates Dewitt, NY USA X-Request-PGP: http://www.kcoates.com/0x434798B9.htm Using TB! v2.0 Beta/5 under Windows XP 5.1.2600 SP1 . -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- iD8DBQE/TYfjRbTFvUNHmLkRAhKhAKDrMPb9l4FH4ozBcScEiqcYn6UwHgCgrwxz bJCw1sHM03PEq7it8088r8A= =nLio -END PGP SIGNATURE- Current version is 1.62r | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

The logic behind not filtering attachments is sound, since it could mean very long filtering times on messages with large attachments. I wouldn't like it when some filters with location=everywhere would start checking multiple MB attachments. BTW You started your question as an answer to another thread. That's not the best thing to do for the following reason. The Bat is able to thread messages properly, in order to see what I mean, just select the folder where you're storing the messages from this list. Go to the menu: view - view threads by - references. Now you'll see that all messages are lined up after the message to which they're first, second (or whatever) level replies to. You started what's essentially a new thread by replying to another message. That means it shows up as listed in another thread. Since people sometimes skip messages in threads they don't consider interesting (for lack of time). They might skip your message too, since they're not aware of the newly started thread. So next time you'd do yourself a favor by sending a new message in stead of a reply, because you're reaching a larger audience and one of those might have the answer you've been waiting for. Problem with sending attachments
I have two e-mail accounts, one of which I normally use, and one in reserve. I'm having to use the reserve one at present because of a problem with the main one, and I'm finding that I can't send large attachments with it using the Bat!, although the two accounts appear to be identically configured in Account - Properties. When I try to send attachments (not even particularly large ones; I just tried with a 325 kb file), the Internet connection automatically terminates after a few seconds. Messages without attachments, or with very small attachments, are sent normally. Compressing the file with Winzip doesn't help. The problem doesn't lie with the reserve provider, because I can send attachments with the Netscape e-mail program. I use a router with the main provider, and an external modem with the reserve one. It seems that P.Johnson (as quoted by a Canadian in Houston) said ... Well, actually it is possible, but not solely with TB: Export the message Edit the subject with Notepad or another text editor. Import the message back into TB. Now you can delete the original message. There might be a better way. A new user asked about the ability to edit received messages. Without testing, I replied, Try Ctrl-E. So today I tried it and thought I had provided bad advice. Ctrl-E opens the message for editing as I said. But when you try to close the message, TB asks if you want to save it and, if you do, demands an entry in the to field. Then it places the saved message in the outbox. It's a pending message, so it won't be sent unless you send it. (I specified [EMAIL PROTECTED] just to give it a valid-looking address.) The message is parked (although it's marked with a pending message icon instead of the usual parked P icon). I thought that was the end of the story, but it's not. You can then click the icon in the PARKED column to change the icon back to a blue dot and drag the message to a folder of your choosing. Preventing an e-mail from being sent
Hi all, Is there a way to prevent e-mail being sent to an address? I've tried an outgoing e-mail filter but it doesn't work. It seems to be triggered only after the e-mail's been sent. I have a friend who is looking for an e-mail solution for a small law office and they'd like to be able to do something along these lines to ensure that e-mail doesn't inadvertently get sent somewhere it isn't supposed to go, like opposing counsel. Sounds to me sort of like an outgoing whitelist would serve the purpose, but I haven't ever heard of anything like that. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. -- Regards, Terry Using The Bat! v1.62r on Windows 2000 5.0 Build 2195 Service Pack 3 Current version is 1.62r | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

regexp in selective download filter problem
I'm trying to filter out messages with From: field containing address that starts with 238, and then has three digits before @. Regexp I'm using is ^238\d\d\d@ . I tested this regexp with regular filter -- it worked just fine (after I enabled regular expression filtering). Then I created a Selective Download rule with ^238\d\d\d@ as its Signal String, and checked Match any string as regular expression at the Advanced tab. This rule does not work. What am I doing wrong?
