Upgrading to win 8 questions
I am upgrading to 64 bit Windows 8. Any advice or things I should watch for? If possible I am going to use 2 logins (one for my wife). If the Bat is loaded twice (once in each login) does that make any issues of which I should be aware? I would LIKE to have both profiles accessing the same database as I do all the maintenance and process all the spam I am moving up from XP, so I don't know much :) -- Rick Only when the last tree has died, the last river been poisoned, the last fish been caught, will we realize we can not eat money, Cree proverb v5.3.2.12 (BETA) on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 3 Current version is 5.2.2 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Hi Jernej, On Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at 3:03:55 PM PST, you wrote: It definitely is. If the lack of Start Menu annoys you, there's Classic Shell http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/ (free, but it's Start Menu is somewhat quirky) or StartIsBack http://startisback.com/ ($3 for 2 computers, but it's nearly identical to Windows 7's Start Menu). Sad, isn't it, to require a third party fix right out of the box just to maintain some basic functionality that we've come to appreciate? Since my only touch screen devices run Android, I certainly don't need the extra bloat--and potential resultant issues--associated with the Windows 8 all-in-one approach. Also, currently the upgrade to Win8 Pro costs 30€, while upgrade to Windows 7 is around 200€. Depends on where you are, who you know, how much patience you have, or how lucky you can be. Here in the US, even the full retail price wouldn't come close to 200€ ($200 USD, at most). My main laptop came with Windows 7 installed, but my two new (used, but new to me) little netbooks needed new OSs after I installed new hard drives in them. I got a legitimate copy of Windows 7 for $45 USD (unused, on Craigslist - someone got it as a gift, but didn't need it). There was even someone (a computer tech) selling a System Builder DVD for the same price (these contain all versions of Windows 7, both 32 and 64 bit - with pre-programmed license activation) for the same price. Not being an official system builder myself, I did feel a bit awkward about that, so I just went with the plain Jane copy of Home Premium. Good enough for my purposes. Microsoft still has to support Windows 7 for several years to come, and since I've had a really good experience with this version, I see no point in messing about with a pre-SP1 Windows 8. To each our own. :) -- Melissa PGP Public Key: http://tinyurl.com/2cmefzy TB! v5.2.2 on Windows 7 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 pgpq4Av0gcKi7.pgp Description: PGP signature Current version is 5.2.2 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

I am upgrading to 64 bit Windows 8. MR If you want an upgrade at this point, I might recommend you move to MR Windows 7. Any advice or things I should watch for? MR If there's a reason you really want to move to Windows MR 8--eventually--I'd advise waiting at least until Service Pack 1 MR (usually a good idea). What to watch for? Watch for bugs. I am moving up from XP, so I don't know much :) MR Windows 7 is clearly an upgrade from XP. I'm not so sure about MR Windows 8 - much too early to tell. Thanks for the reply. Re: Upgrading to win 8 questions
Hi Melissa, I am upgrading to 64 bit Windows 8. If you want an upgrade at this point, I might recommend you move to Windows 7. I use Windows 8 since more than a year and the missing start menu is something that isn't missing after a week or so. And the system boots quicker, reacts quicker and if you by any change have a touch device you got a new way of manipulating things. All good. -- Cheers, Raymund Current version is 5.2.2 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: Upgrading to win 8 questions
Moin Rick, I am upgrading to 64 bit Windows 8. Any advice or things I should watch for? Nothing special. If you want to use File History make sure to put the mail base into documents and not into %APPDATA%. If possible I am going to use 2 logins (one for my wife). You really should do that. If the Bat is loaded twice (once in each login) does that make any issues of which I should be aware? With the normal setup that should work fine. I would LIKE to have both profiles accessing the same database as I do all the maintenance and process all the spam That might be a problem. But only if both users are logged in at the time. Which will likely happen with the shiny new device... -- Cheers, Raymund Current version is 5.2.2 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
