In TheBat 4.1.11, the backup file didn't get compressed
To my surprise, my .tbk backup file (using 4.1.11) was about 3 times as large as before. After I cleaned out and compressed the folders, it got back down to normal, but why would the backup not be automatically minimized? If the user doesn't realize that it's not minimized, the backups could waste a lot of space on the backup media. OT: Changes at GMX
For those who are interested in GMX free email: - Start Forwarded Message - From: GMX [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Alle Mitglieder von GMX [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: GMX International Dear GMX member, as you are a user of our e-mail services, you might know that GMX is a company based in Munich, Germany. Despite the international reach of the Internet and irrespective of globalisation our user statistics reflect the fact that we are a German-based company: More than 97 percent of our members state that German is their mother tongue. In view of the global nature of the Internet we have so far offered our main features in various languages. However, the design, the host of features and security standards of our multi-lingual website are no longer state-of-the art and do not meet the high standard we set for the German site. From an economic point of view it seems not reasonable to us to adapt our multilingual webpages. For this reason, we have finally decided to give up the international versions as of January 31, 2002. Please be informed that your e-mail address is still available after this date. You can use your adress under the same domain as in the past. You can further use an external mail program or enjoy the whole range of features GMX offers on the German website. Maybe you take this as an opportunity to brush up your knowledge of German a bit. We appreciate your understanding for this decision and would be happy to welcome you again on our website. Dealing with TBUDL List Volume using GMX
I thought I would share my technique for pre-filtering TBUDL messages (getting just the original questions sent to my standard email account, without so many reply messages). I filter-out the replys, and just send the original question emails to my standard email server. Then, if the topic is interesting, which most are, I can go find all the replies on that topic. My TBUDL messages go to a free GMX (web) email account ( http://www35.gmx.net/v4/login?LANG=uk ), where I use these filters (below). Messages with Re: or Re[2]: are stored locally, and others are forwarded to my standard email account (to give me a heads-up on current topics on TBUDL). IMAP email login using encrypted password
Hi Peter, But one thing _is_ sure: Netscape has to send User/Pass too, otherwise no Login could be done :-) But as I said: seem Netscape needs to do this only once in opposite to TB! :-) You are correct about Netscape holding the connction open but I am confirming that in the one Netscape login sequence, the username and password are NOT visible in the packets. I don't mean to anal about this as I've been using FTP and other unencoded stuff for years. My concern is that, as we move towards a future where there is more and more malicious hacking of all kinds, and speaking as someone who needs to log in on a lot of customers' servers I am going to be wanting to avoid yelling that password every few minutes day after day. That's why I began looking into the Secure Bat which uses hardware protection. I was trying to get the MD5 or other protected stuff working in the regular Bat to see if the secure version willwork with my servers. -- Best regards, Randy -- Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Latest Vers: 1.53d FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com
IMAP email login encrypted password
Hi Peter, ?!? What login are you talking about? POP3-login for fetching your mail? Or IMAP? Yes, there is the possibility for TB! to use a more secure way, sadly the server has to support this kind of login. One would be 'APOP' an other would be 'MD5-CRAM'. Both are supported by TB! and IIRC SSL is being developed. The passwords are stored somehow encrypted within TB! but as long the the server only understands plain text passwords (which is the case if no APOP/CRAM is available) TB! has to decrypt before fetching your mail, otherwise the server would refuse your connection :-) I'm talking about IMAP. On the same server, Netscape Messenger 4.78 talks to the server and no username/password is visible in the packets it sends. Just plain IMAP with no special security. Using TB, regardless of what I configure (MD5,...) TB sends the username/password in the clear for every transaction with the server!
