TB! going well at present..
Hello BatPersons Recently Allie M said re IMAP accounts... then try deleting the local cache for the IMAP folders since there may be a problem with them. To do this, right click each IMAP folder and select Properties. The 'clear cache now' button is there on the Properties panel. DO NOT use the 'empty folder' option to do this. This will empty the IMAP folders contents *on the server*. 'Smiled when I saw this. AM doubtless had some stupid person in mind: Me! ;-) Yes...I did this (used empty folder) when going thru mega-woes with TB! But!...I had a 'mirror' of the messages I wanted/needed in the IMAP folders in another mailer I use (ThunderBird). BTW, TB! incl my IMAP account therein is going well at present: no 'runtime' error messages, no 'error reading database' messages... Still not sure why all this happened...Possibly multifactorial (as most 'diseases' are...). Cleaning up Win 98 (running various maintenance procedures...which I do regularly anyway) may have been one part of the cure. Threatening WinDoze with going entirely over to Linux (Xandros) may also have had a salutary effect...;-) One serious point tho: when I was reinstalling TB! over and over again...this time ver 2.10.03...then ver 2.11.x... over and over again...I was using copies of the program in my downloads folder on my hard drive Then I downloaded a 'fresh' copy from Ritlabs...and the problems went awayCoincidence?? I am wondering if somehow the copies of the program on my hard rive somehow got corrupted...Just a thought... BTW...I am feeling very positive about IMAP in TB! at present IMAP in Thunderbird is perhaps simpler...and maybe more stable...but IMAP in TB is pretty good now as well methinks... and, in TB! fashion..very configurable... Hi BatPhiles... I was intrigued by a throw away line by Thomas... who mentioned he might go for Xandros instead of upgrading to Win XP? (I am running Win 98 on a Pentium III machine a few...or several...years old...) I have played with various Linux distros on the dark side (of my hard drive)..most recently Mandrake...but Thomas's remark re Xandros intrigued me... With Crossover in Xandros...does this mean you can use TheBat?? How well will it run? I am also wondering about other hardware/software..eg can iPod be used in Xandros? (i use iPod as an external drive to backup data from my work Win XP machine...OK!..I use it for music too! ;-)...but was annoyed that it doesn't work with Win 98... I hate that! (Built in obsolescence) Oops!... a bit off topic... I guess this is one advantage of Mozilla browsers/mailers (eg ThunderBird)...tho lacking the power/functionality of TheBat, they are cross -platform applications... BTW..TheBat has been running well the last few days (no 'runtime' and 'error reading database' messages)...don't know why. The last time I installed from a fresh download from ritlabs...rather than repeated instals from the copies (of ver 2.11.x and 2.10.03) I had on my hard drive... 'error reading database' and 'runtime messages'-saga continues...
Further to previous posts I thought I was out of the woods But now Run time error messages are keeping me out of The Bat (again). (I am writing this from ThunderBird...I suppose I could write this from Outlook Express...but you would then consign me to purgatory and exclude me from this list...) Anywayto recap brieflyI was getting 'error reading database' messages relating to my IMAP account Inbox...AND my POP account InBox I think I am over that now...(after lots of uninstalls, reinstalls...and going to and from ver 2.10.x to ver 2.11.x). (Thanks for your help with all this Allie...although some mysteries remain unresolved...) I was also getting run time error messages. Thomas explained that this was not likely due to The Bat.as it is written in Delphi...but could be BayesIt...written in C++... So, I uninstalled the Bayesit plugin...and also the 'generic antivirus' plugin...which I think avast! must have put thereAnd all was sweet Now when I go to open TheBat (ver 2.11.x)I can't get in because the Run Time message comes up. I tried reinstalling...but leaving my data folder intact...and I still get the runtime message. I think on one of my recent installs, I may have forgotten to give BayesIt the flick. (But who knows..because I can't open TBat! :-) I have told Avast not to do its Mail protection thing...just in case its plug-in was stuffing things up... Right now I am considering going back to AVG (although I have found avast very good/better)...or coughing up the money for nod32. (I won't go near Norton.don't ask...). So, that is where I am up to. I had a purple patch with TheBat for the 2 years or so I have used it...but now it is causing a bit of grief (Fortunately my wife...who hates computers...and the amount of time I spend on them...is a very nice/tolerant person... ;-) I suspect some or all of the following could be involved with 'error reading database' and 'runtime' messages/woes: * Using IMAP on my main account for the past few months * Newer versions of The Bat??/ this only happened I think when I got ver 2.11. * avast! ?? plugins? (The program automatically/ regularly updates..along with the virus signatures) (Still need an a/v on board, but my mail is checked for viruses anyway by Kaspersky at the Fastmail server...) *BayesIt plugin...?? ... (Don't need it...my mail is checked for spam at the Fastmail server...) * I need a new computer?? was runtime, now error reading database...
Further to my recent post re runtime errors - apparently associated with ver 2.11.x...I started getting 'error reading database' messages (ERDM)...in ver 2.10.03...which doesn't seem to elicit runtime error messages I invoked Message Finder to find certain messages in the Inbox of my IMAP account. This caused an ERDM which asked me to repair the database. Despite attempts to do this (using Maintenance)... all of which failed...eventually I could only get out of The Bat (TB) by rebooting the computer. (All this happened a few days ago as well...followed by runtime messages). Then I clicked on the Inbox of my POP3 account...and I got another ERDM. This time I could run the repair routine in Maintenance, but repair was not done...or the error was repeated - because I kept getting ERDMs when I clicked on the Inbox of that account... So, I have temporarily given up (again)...Despite a dream run with TheBat for over 2 years or sonow I am running into repeated problems... :-( Whether this is coincidental with me starting to use IMAP several months ago...I don't know. The fact that I had a dream run with TB for so long suggest it is not entirely due to operator ineptitude... Allie Martin: This is occurring with an IMAP account? Hm. At first I thought it was just IMAP associated, but the 'error reading database' (ERD) message then also appeared when I clicked on the Inbox of my POP3 account (TPG) .. Allie Martin:We would then need to know if you're searching cached messages or if you're searching the server's database. I am 99.99% certain I was just searching the cache. I DID consider at the time that the problem might be server-side...but the evidence suggested otherwise...(eg I was not on-line...and my TB's IMAP settings are for manual connection...and automatic disconnect when synchronization is finished... Allie Martin:Have you tried clearing the Inbox cache? Right click the Inbox and hit the 'clear cache now' button. Resync so that the local cache can be rebuilt. Are you still having the problem? If so, then the problem is with the server's database. See above - I am pretty certain I was just searching the cache of my IMAP account (FastMail) Inbox. However...I attempted to do just as you suggested above: Firstly I could see no 'clear cache now' button. I DID have an 'empty folder' option...which I uneasily thought might be the same thing.. My unease proved to be well founded: 'empty folder' did empty the cache...but then I wondered why I could not rebuild the cache from the Inbox server-side. A visit to my Inbox server side confirmed my suspicions: all my messages there were marked for deletion... :-)(but not purged, fortunately). Anyway...I am not too worried...Although 154 messages were involved..they are not that important (unlike my work files!!)...and, because I am also using ThunderBird...I have a current copy of these 154 messages in the FastMail (IMAP account) Inbox cache in T-Bird...(and I have just copied all these to a local folder in T-Bird). Life is interesting, nicht wahr?? ;-) Allie Martin:We'll now have to elucidate if it's a genuine problem with the database or a problem with TB! using that server's databases. Questions that would help to clarify this are: - Is this an acquired problem or has it always existed when using TB! with this IMAP account? The problem has only developed in the last week or so...(since going to ver 2.11.x I think...but I suspect that is coincidental...). I have used TBat! for about 2 years I think...and IMAP for at least several months...and in TheBat as well as other mailers... And the ERD messages in TB! happened with a POP account as well as the IMAP one... Allie Martin:- Have you tried another IMAP client and doing searches with the same IMAP account? Does the other IMAP client work with the account without any problems? Yes... I did a search of my Inbox in Thunderbirdoff-line, then on-line, then after sync...It all worked perfectly. In short...the problem is not server side...( BTW, I have found FastMail very good/reliable). The problem is located entirely with TheBat (and/or the fool at the keyboard.. :-D ) SL: This caused an ERDM which asked me to repair the database. Despite attempts to do this (using Maintenance)... all of which failed...eventually I could only get out of The Bat (TB) by rebooting the computer. Allie Martin:This will VERY likely not work if you're trying to use TB!'s mailbase repair tool to repair an IMAP account's *remote* mailbase. See above.. I am certain I was off-line when attempting to repair the IMAP Inbox (cache)...which I could not do...and had to resort to crtl-alt-del to get out of TBat. The repair of the POP3 account Inbox seemed to work...but then it kept repeating... I think I anticipated all your diagnostic suggestions, Allie...but appreciate your patience and insightful input... Perhaps now you might suggest I try another email client ...or at least quietly leave the list..or get a brain transplant...?? ;-) At least I am not getting runtime messages of late..(Thanks for the reminder that many experience problems with BayesIt Thomas...I have 'unplugged' it...) -- SteveL 0922 Sun 13 June 2004 NSW Australia Written in ThunderBird...so my apologies if the format is not the best... :-DSmileys are courtesy of T-Bird... bug report - Runtime error when starting TB ver 2.11.x
Hi BatFolk I have just submitted my second bug report re TheBat!. With ver 2.11.x, but apparently not ver 2.10.x , I sometimes get Runtime error messages. Once the runtime messages start to appear, they keep appearing. I think it is only happening with ver 2.11.02. (Error message...'this application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way...') Questions and comments: 1. I have no idea what runtime or runtime error messages (from 'Microsoft Virtual C++ Library) mean. 2. I just noticed that when you send a bug report to Ritlabs, a copy dose not automatically go to your 'sent' folder. 3. Has anyone else experienced Runtime error messages with ver 2.11.x or any other version?? 4. I know Ritlabs people are very busy..(as most of us are), but it would be nice to get at least an automated acknowledgement that they have received your report and will look at it... 5. Now for some black humour (as opposed to bitterness): The Bat may be a turbo charged V8, and lesser mailers (ThunderBird, Outlook Express, Outlook, Eudora, Pocomail, Lotus, Pegasus, Courier/Calypso etc...all of which I have used) may be like small capacity 4 cylinder engined cars in comparison, but the little car that goes is faster than the turbo V8 that won't start ;-) 6. Hi BatPersons Someone asked (sorry...can't find the original message) if there were more IMAP-related problems with TB with versions 2.1.x It may be coincidence, but I had no problems with TB 'till ver 2.11.x (as you can see I am now back to ver 2.10.x). I had database errors...which I was unable to repair, then repeated messages from Windows re Runtime Errors (which I don't understand). TB! or not TB ? (..that is the question..)
Hello TBUD Listees I have resumed the vain search for the perfect mailer, which of course is different things to different people (and a futile quest for all!). I keep coming back to The Bat! (TB!), despite not liking its (to me unappealing) appearance, its buggy HTML editing etc BUT...it has so many pluses. I am using IMAP in Mozilla ThunderBird (TB...or T-Bird if you like) and in TB! Both have their pluses and minuses. I don't find IMAP in TB! too bad... Also I like TB! 's speed...it opens up faster than most mailers and seems to do various operations as faster or faster than most... TB! gives you plenty of options too...and lets you know what is going on...(eg when sending/receiving mail...I like that...) However T-Bird has some real pluses too (a lot of FastMail devotees seem to use it too)...especially for a freebie... Anyone else tried both T-Bird and TB!...especially IMAP?? -- Regards, Steve Lovemailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] 17:31 Friday, 28 May 2004 Using The Bat! v2.10.03 (Protocol:usually IMAP) on Windows 98 4.10 Build B Current version is 2.10.03 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
