setting up preferences for gmail; missing e-mail
If anyone on the list uses g-mail, I would appreciate some assistance in setting up a g-mail account on The Bat. I have been successful in setting up my private domain accounts, however, I now also have a g-mail account. For some reason, the Connection Center window hangs open and won't download a test message that was sent and is sitting on the gmail server. Is this a function of my not properly setting up the account on The Bat, or could it also be a function of my firewall (Outpost Agnitum). G-mail requires two ports that are different from the usual ones. Do I need to open them in my firewall first? If you use g-mail AND have Outpost, I would be particularly interested in hearing from you. Also, because I receive list mail both at home and at the office, I have just discovered that I have not been receiving a large number of postings to the list at home, where I use The Bat. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? This seems to happen with greater frequency with postings from certain sources. However, not ALL of the mail from any one source is appears to be missing. I am hoping that this is a function of the ISP's mail server and not of my pc or software. However, until I can get the g-mail account to work properly for downloading e-mail to my pc, I can't know for sure. PS. Because I don't receive all list mail at home, it would be much appreciated if replies could ALSO be copied to my home e-mail address, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks. -- Avi Avram Sacks Chicago, IL using The Bat ver. 1.62r on Windows XP professional Current version is 3.5.25 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
multiple e-mail account with same name
Hi. I would appreciate it if someone could help me to figure out how to transition my e-mail setup from an ISP to a private domain. Specifically, if I have an e-mail account in The Bat for Achdut for mail obtained from RCN, is it possible to set up a private domain with the same mailbox name, achdut, and have The Bat retrieve mail from the private domain and filter it into the same folders into which mail addressed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] is filtered? When I attempt to set up a new account the prompt tells me that any name I use must be different from one that is already being used. Since achdut is already being used (for the RCN server), am I now prevented from using achdut to access mail located at [EMAIL PROTECTED]? -- Avi Avram Sacks using The Bat ver. 1.62r. Re[2]: multiple e-mail account with same name
Hi Tony, Thursday, June 16, 2005, 2:37:42 AM, you wrote in response to my query about setting up multiple e-mail accounts with the same name: TB Can't you just edit your existing POP/SMTP server details and change them TB to your new private domain servers details. TB That way your existing account complete with existing folders will still be TB used only pointing to your new domain. You may still have to edit the odd TB filter or two so that they don't filter on your old address. Your suggestion won't work because there will be an overlap period of a month or two where both addresses will be live. And, for various e-mail lists, including this one, I may decide to continue the achdut user name in a gmail account. -- Avi Avram Sacks Chicago, IL using The Bat ver. 1.62r on MS XP Professional Current version is 3.5.25 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
file extension on attached files in received mail
When I receive an e-mail with an attached document, I am unable to directly open the document with a double click because the file name for the document has a .aq exentension that is added to the file name. This extension is added automatically to all received mail. (Thus, in order to open the document I am forced to first save it to my hard drive and then open it. This is a waste of time) Is The Bat adding this extension to incoming attached files, is my AV software (Computer Associates eTrust eZ Antivirus), or, is my operating system doing this? -- Avram Sacks Chicago, IL running The Bat ver. 1.62r on MS XP Professional Current version is 3.5.0.17 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re[2]: Downloading e-mail on to second computer
Way back in August 2003 I inquired about how to set up The Bat on a laptop, download e-mail from the server, and, eventually, transfer all of the downloaded e-mail to the pre-exising Bat file on my desktop. Alie's response clued me in to synchronization. Well, after 10 months, I am just getting around to setting up The Bat on the laptop, and I am running into a problem in just trying to copy the_bat_o.exe file to the laptop. When I run the setup file, I get the following error message when I attempt to install The Bat to the c:\program directory: cannot access directory \\DESKTOP\THE BAT!\MAI Why would it try to access the desktop? And, even though a Bat subdirectory was created within the program directory, when I attemtp to click on the bat.exe file, I get the same error message. Why? -- Avi Avram Sacks Chicago, IL [EMAIL PROTECTED] Also, please copy any response to [EMAIL PROTECTED], as well. This will not stop unless TF you delete the message on serever using TB's mail despatcher, or turn TF off your over-eager AV program. If I understand correctly, what happened is that when The Bat attempts to download e-mail, it is first downloaded to the Temp directory. If the message has a virus, then my AV software (My eTrust by Computer Associates) will prevent the e-mail from going into a mail folder. (Assuming, of course, that the signature files for the AV software recognize the virus.) However, the virus-laden message still remains on the server because The Bat would only direct the server to delete the message AFTER the message finds its way into a Bat folder. Because the message was only able to go as far as the Temp subdirectory, The Bat did not instruct the server to delete the offending e-mail. Is this correct. Based on this, and not being familiar with mail despactcher I assumed that I needed to delete a virus-laden message off of the server. So, using webmail, I went out to the server using my web browser and deleted two suspicious messages, both of which had attachments. How do I delete the message on the server using TB's mail despatcher. And, just exactly, what IS TB's mail despatcher (dispatcher?) It would appear that these files are in the Temp subdirectory. Re: sending e-mail to address book list
Hi. I just wanted to publicly thank everyone who responded to my query regarding sending e-mail to multiple recipients when the ISP has an apparent limit on the number of recipients per e-mail, and, to provide a little bit of an epilogue: I called back ATTBI and spoke with yet a *third* technical support specialist. Upon hearing I had an e-mail problem, his first question was what e-mail software do you use? and upon being told it was TB, he said he had never heard of it and, in any event, they only support Outlook or Outlook Express. After patiently explaining to him that I had no difficulty using TB's software and that individual messages were being mailed out, he then said that the problem I was having was due to my trying to use the server when it was busy! (My initial problem occurred at about 4:30 a.m.--not exactly a high traffic time here in the U.S.) He then conceded that the busy server was most likely due to the fact that since Comcast will soon take possession of ATTBI as a consequence of its purchase this past November, ATTBI was reducing the number of servers supporting e-mail. (What? So that Comcast gets to acquire less capital equipment in use at the time of possession?) He allowed that a number of people had called ATTBI with the same exact problem. So, in the end, it appears that the probable reason for my problems had less to do with The Bat and more to do with ATTBI's allowing fewer resources to manage the e-mail traffic on its soon. Surprisingly, I was able to successfuly use the group feature to send e-mail change notices to the rest of my list. However, I could not set the subject line in the quick template I created. Each outgoing piece of mail had to have the subject line added manually. What is the best way to handle this/? downloading from multiple mailboxes at once
Is it possible to download from more than one mailbox at a time by using only one download command? My cable ISP allows up to 6 mailboxes. Until now, I have been using a single box through a different provider. I intend to maintain the same folders/filtering system currently in place, but would like to set up 3 mailboxes as my spam solution: 1 box for personal mail[let's call it asacks, 1 for e-mail lists [let's call it achdut], and 1 for online purchases [let's call it buymail]. However, it would be a pain if I had to download 3 separate times in order to pick up all of my mail. Can The Bat be configured so that all mail sent to each of the 3 accounts provided by the same cable provider can be downloaded with one command? file size limitations for The Bat?
Hi. Are there limitations on the number of messages that any given folder can hold or on the total number of messages that can be in all folders, combined? Even if there are no limitations, per se, would the file holding the messages, or the software itself become unstable if there are more than a given number of messages, or kb of data in the file. The largest file in terms of message number is the folder for messages from this list, itself: 14,536 messages. In terms of sheer size, the inbox is the largest with 356,000 kilobytes. Finally, each folder has two files, both named messages. However, can someone explain what the file extensions, .tbb and .tbi refer to and how these files are different? Thanks. -- Avi Avram L. sending captured screenshots using The Bat
Hi, all. Is it not possible to send captured screenshots using The Bat? I tried doing so, but once I captured the screen (actually, it was the top open window of the screen) and tried to paste it into the message, nothing would paste into the message, although it would paste into Word. For example, if I want to send an error message to a software vendor, it is a lot easier to enter the altprint screen command and then paste the captured error message into the mail message, as I am accustomed to doing when using Lotus Notes, then if I first have to paste the message into a Word document and then attach the document to the mail message. (And, I am not even sure that the captured screen shot would appear in a received message because I haven't yet tried doing this.) what are bat*.tmp files?
Hi, everyone. Can someone explain to me what the signficance, if any, is of files that appear in the Local Settings\Temp subdirectory that are named bat*.tmp, where the * represents any two- to four-character alphanumeric combination? These files appear in the temp subdirectory only on occasion after I have downloaded e-mail. There must be nothing in these files, since the size is 0kb. Additonally, they only seem to appear when I have received an error message that reads something like: ezTrustAntivirus real-time protection has found that C:\DOCUME~1\USER\LOCALS~1\Temp\bat4D2.tmp was infected with HTML.MimeExploit virus and has restored the file.
