You'd be surprised of how many different defaults different people would
want. For you, threading by Reference + Subject is the 'natural way',
for me it is by Reference _only_ I know of people who thread only by
Subject and many who don't thread at all.

I also do not care what the threadign method is as long as I can
scroll back up to the previous messages in a logical sequence. I will
try Reference only as that is probably more logical than Message and
subject in theory.

which leaves the selected message in view.

Ah but in which case why would you click the sort by column buttons if you
did not want to see the messages with the flags

Perhaps the message in view is one of the messages in the class of
messages sorted for, and perhaps one doesn't want to lose the message
in view.

If you just want to see flagged messages, there is a better method to do
that without re-sorting. Just Alt+click on the flag of a flagged
message. It works the same for not flagged, kept/not kept, read/unread,
and also on the From, To, Subject, Received, Created, etc. columns. To
return to the View All state, just hit Esc.

Hello Steve,

How do I find a flagged message unless I have sorted by flagged
 messages?

Another thought, if you find yourself looking for flagged messages
more than once or twice a year you might want to whip up a virtual
folder for flagged messages. Comes in handy and I only use it
sparingly.

Do what Miguel proposes. Hold the alt key and click on a flagged
message. The result will be only flagged messages shown. You get out
of this view by hitting esc.

Oh come on! I don't know if you are joking or what. Just set the flag on
any message, do the quick filter (Alt+click) on it and reset the flag.

Actually that one seems to work out OK. Just a bit unusual.

I think the point I am getting at is why do some of these interface
issues have to be set up and not be the default - for instance surely
threading by Reference + Subject should be the default as it is the
natural way to read messages. ???

Not the way it is currently implemented. If subjects repeat over time,
it may get buried in ages old thread, instead of current thread.

Also, if one wants to fix threading, it just gets annotated in a file
somewhere and doesn't actually fix the mail. No editing of mail, or
making notes in a message in the mailbox is allowed.

I would like to be able to make notes in email messages. Such as
annotate phone conversations about an email, etc. There is a work
around, where you can make floating notes you might remember to look
at later, which seems inadequate to me.

There seems to be some notion that it is WRONG to want to make a note
in a message, and that someone might one day perpetrate a forgery if
such an ability existed, and they are saving users from themselves.

I use CTRL SHFT I to bring up the memo box. You can then have a narrow
memo box selected in your column view and there are your notes.

Dear Stefan,

When we click on one for the field headings to sort the table, could you
please have the scroll bar shoot up (or down) so that you can see the
first or last message?

In theory clicking on the flagged column for instance, all the flagged
messages should shoot to the top and be immediately visible instead
of having to manually scroll up.
