Folders don't display contents immediately

2004-08-10 Thread Robin Anson
Batlovers

On 16 July in mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] I complained that
TB! was taking an inordinate amount of time to start up and that
sometimes when I selected a folder in the account tree the contents would
not display immediately in the message list.

Well the slow start up still occurs, but only occasionally and not
frequently enough to be a problem. However the problem of the message
list not displaying is a constant, ongoing and annoying problem.

What happens is that I will select a folder and, for no reason that I can
determine, TB! will simply not display the contents. The only solution is
to keep the focus on TB! and wait for 40 seconds, when the contents will
suddenly appear. On average this seems to occur about one in ten times
that I change folder focus, but sometimes it occurs much more frequently.

Since I am constantly changing folders in my work as I refer to messages
filed in different folders, stopping for 40 seconds more than very
occasionally rapidly becomes a major annoyance. So much so that I am now
thinking about downgrading to v2.11 to avoid the problem.

Has anyone else experienced the problem? Does anyone know of a solution,
even a possible solution, before I go crazy with frustration???!!!

Are these POP or IMAP.

I have this with IMAP folders at times. Long delays before the
contents appear.

Which anti-virus program are you using. Could there be an issue with
fighting over the message base for scanning vs TB! for displaying?

I'm using eTrust, but it isn't related to downloading of messages. It
happens even to folders that haven't had a new message for days.

This doesn't necessarily matter. Have you tried disabling eTrust's
system scanner? Yes, eScan will scan files that have changed or that
it considers to be new and needs scanning. Be that as it may,
sometimes, this sort of thing defies logical explanation since we
don't have all the cards on the table. :)

What you're experiencing is VERY odd, especially since it's a POP
account. A 100 message folder taking 40 secs to display the message
list is just off the scale. Something is causing it and I really doubt
that it's simply TB!. A corrupt message base is one of the few reasons
confined to TB!.

Made any changes to your system lately? Is your system behaving
normally otherwise?

40 seconds is a lot, but I keep experiencing a few seconds too many on
my Win98 system at home. I don't have that problem in the office on XP
Pro.

I noticed that the problem occurs with large folders ( a couple of
thousand messages, not tens of thousands), but not with smaller
folders. Attachment sizes play a role.

Purging compressing, deleting the .tbi file, or defragging the disk
didn't help.

My TB! startup was significantly slower after I installed a virus scanner
with an on-access watchdog. Excluding TB!'s mail directory (and
subdirectories) from the on-access scanner helped me.

Apart from upgrading to v2.12.00, no recent changes. It seems to be

In some of the folders I do. I probably don't have any individual
attachments larger than 6MB, but some folders contain many attachments.

However the behaviour is exhibited in both my TBUDL and TBOT folders
which have very few, and only small, attachments.

Well, I probably can't help there. Most of my folders are under 1MB in
size (I store attachments separately) and they almost always open in
under a second, even over the network with virus scanners working.
When new mail comes in, of course, there's a delay while the virus
scanners do their thing. But compacting always gets a zip back in my
folders if they're slow in opening.

It probably doesn't add much value; however, [EMAIL PROTECTED] may be causing
your problem. Try turning it off and see if your folders display at

Yes I am. The SETI Team is having some problems with the new servers
(not being able to get work units, not being able to return work
units, not getting credit for work units, loosing work units, etc.),
so my experience has been less than great. I would wait to upgrade
