Yahoo does this every few weeks with one of my accounts but, but only
one. I don't recall having had it from google, but have heard others
complaining about it.

Nobody else seems to play these games with IP

As noted above, I get it from Yahoo.

Facebook does it as well and then demands all sorts of ridiculous,
privacy-invading steps to regain access, which has caused me to lose
three facebook accounts in the last couple of years.

Hello,

I never see that, since Gmail works perfectly well in The Bat! using
SMTP/POP without resorting to their terrible (IMHO) webmail interface.

Yes, gmail works very nicely with The Bat via SMTP, POP and IMAP. That's
not what I was asking though.

What about option: Address Book/File/Import made you think that?

When I try to import contacts from gmail to The Bat, I get the error
that you correctly interpreted below.

In case anyone's interested this has been accepted from my bug report:

    MESSAGE

   Hello,

   Thank you for contacting us!

We have managed to reproduce this error - indeed, the fields Nickname
and Groups are not completed properly.

We have registered this issue and will forward the information to the
   developers.

   =

Bug number to follow, and I guess that this thread is now redundant.

However when I try to do this I find that it populates
the Nickname and Groups fields with the following
 string:

 http://www.google.com/m8/feeds/contacts/my.name%40gmail.com/base/ddc4370ecd72d3

I take it you mean the fields get populated with that URL itself, since
following the URL gives me Google's 401 error page.

gmail works fine in all email clients. Just set it up once to activate
the POP server. Then you should never need to start a web browser
again (until you create another gmail address). BUT there is still the
problem of IP address. Every so often,
you get web login required messages in your email client error logs
and the only way to fix it is to actually login with a web browser.

It is a real pain with VPNs (I use whichever one gets a
connection that doesn't drop and it's not always the same one) or even IP
addresses in different
countries without a VPN at all.

Nobody else seems to play these games with IP addresses.
