I'm a user, just like you. So I haven't any idea where RITlabs wants
to go with TB. But the setup of TB is such that IMNSHO it doesn't make
much sense to have much emphasis on IMAP.

TB is about collecting mail and processing it automatically into
folders, responders, etc. To do so effectively with IMAP you'd need to
copy every filter to every copy of TB, otherwise their use would be
fairly limited.

With IMAP you need to do the processing on the server and the only
thing you need a mua for is to access the processed mail and some
manual operations. That is if you want to process the mail
consistently. Therefor it would be a waste of resources to develop the
IMAP of TB any further.

The advantage to process the same mail twice (via POP3) at two
locations (home and office) is that your interests at both places may
differ strongly. So it would make sense to use two different sets of
filters.

Thank you. I've been pulling my hair out for a month trying to figure out
how to make The Bat! be at all useful. Knowing it simply doesn't have the
functionality I need is of great assistance.

If you need access to your mail from different locations and
computers, even share your mailbase with others - as would be the case
for corporate mails (i.e. support) - IMAP is a good idea.

Otherwise POP3 is the way to go. Particularly since TB!'s IMAP support
is practically nothing more than an extended POP3. That is, TB!
supports the most basic commands (getting mail and sending mail) of
the protocol. All other features (synchronising, folder creation and
deletion etc.) are not implemented, yet.

POP3.

You're using TB and TB has a bit imperfect IMAP implementation.

IMAP is more suited to a LAN, because you've got to connect to the
server to read your mail (even a second or third time)

Of course IMAP has advantages like being able to read your mail on any
computer (with an imap client), but with the possibilities that TB
offers I prefer POP3.

The one advantage of IMAP that I might like is that the mail is stored on
the server. So if I have a PC crash, my mail is still on the server and I
can retrieve it. Although if your provider crashes, are they backing up
their mail servers? Maybe not. Something to think about.

I also have the option of POP and IMAP, and I go with POP. I just leave
the mail on the server at all of my mail client locations, except one where
it downloads the mail and deletes it from the server. That way, I can
still see e-mail wherever I'm at.

POP3 or IMAP?

2002-05-21 Thread Csaba Kiss

Hello,
I have just realized that our mail server supports both POP3
access and IMAP access. Which do you think I should use? I read the
same mail account from work and home, so it would be really nice to
see the same messages at both places. However, I don't really see what
IMAP could give me over POP using the BAT.
