You cannot switch an account. You have to create a new account, and create it
as an IMAP account.

I did this for testing earlier, and you can actually have two accounts in TB!
for the same email account at the same time: One being POP and the other being
IMAP.

Change account from POP3 to IMAP

2020-09-22 Thread Andrew Savchenko
Hello,

Seeing that lately TB! gets stuck on receiving mail more often than it
actually manages to complete the transaction, I have decided to try it via
IMAP.

Surprisingly, I can't quite figure out how to do it... Any hints?

In account properties, under the "Transport" tab I can change the server name,
port and auth. scheme, but how to switch from POP3 to IMAP?

 Shift+Ctrl doesn't do it.

Select a filter
Press Ctrl-C
Select the new account

That's copying, I know, but it works.
Unfortunatly, you'll need to do this one filter a time, you cannot
select multiple filters in order to copy them.

No IMAP here, I only use POP. But for me:-

SHIFT+CTRL+LeftArrow moves a folder out from under its parent
folder or account.

SHIFT+CTRL+UpArrow and SHIFT+CTRL+DownArrow move a folder
up or down the list.

SHIFT+CTRL+RightArrow moves a folder in to become a sub-folder
of the account or folder above it in the list.

I always wondered if you could rearrange things with windows
explorer. ANyway, if you create the new IMAP accounts you can drag the
folders on the POP account into the IMAP folder or better yet into
folders that are not associated with an account if you have a ton of
saved mail that would otherwise sync back to the server

Your filters will figure out the changes when you drag them to the
IMAP folder but any templates in the address book, Account or folder
will have to be recreated and edited

POP3 to IMAP

2004-11-22 Thread Chris Weaven
Hi all,

I apologise if this has been asked multiple times before, but I'm after
some assistance to what is hopefully quite a straight forward question!?

I've decided to convert one of my accounts from POP3 to IMAP as my
server supports both protocols.

The account in question currently has about 30 folders with multiple
filters in place to move messages to these folders.

To cut a long story short, basically I'd like to 'simply' keep
everything intact as it is, but change the account to IMAP rather than
POP3.

Is this at all possible, or is it a case of having to re-create the
account in IMAP and then copy the folders, messages and filters over?

I'm sure you need to re-create the account in IMAP, then create the
folders and then copy the messages and filters. That's what I did,
anyway.

Use Thunderbird to copy the messages to IMAP -- it's much better at
this than TB! is.

It's not possible to change an account to use one protocol as opposed to

move the messages across.

Hmm, if there a brief guide available of how to do this?

What I did was from TB!, select the messages in a folder and export as
unix mailbox in the Tbird Local Folders (in your profile/mail folder). I
called the mailbox temp.
Then in Tbird, open the Local Folders/temp folder, select the messages and
move or copy to the appropriate IMAP folder.
Go back to TB!, repeat with the next folder, choosing to overwrite temp
(not append).
It's a long, laborious process, but once you're on IMAP, you can switch
between clients at any time (or run a couple of different clients
simultaneously).
But if you rely on automatic filters in TB!, you may not want to use IMAP.

If I change an account to IMAP and it's not yet fully configured at

If, when IMAP is running, can I change back and forth from IMAP to

I.e: is it just a means to an end or is it a matter of now you're
IMAPping so bye bye POP3 for that account for ever?

I have both possibilities, so I can use POP3 and IMAP at the same account.
I tried it our with Mulberry and that worked well.

At the moment, I've everything in TB as POP3, but would like to try out IMAP with TB.
Therefore I asked for the possibility setting over the whole POP3 config to an
IMAP account that I created. Doing it all over by hand, creating all those
folders with templates, etc., that I've in POP3 and wish also in IMAP would cost
me a lot of time, which I haven't.

I don't know the answer however I wanted to suggest that you could
signup for a @myrealbox (novell free pop/imap service) and test it
out.

That's not the problem, the IMAP at my mailserver works. The problem is
the config in TB.
In stead of making by hand all my existing POP3 folders in the IMAP
account, I asked for an option to copy (transfer) it all from the POP3
config in TB to the IMAP config in TB.

Just follow the URL at the bottom of any message on TBUDL. Choose the
relevant link on the left under 'Contents'.

or

To join the TBBETA, send a message to
mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm sure the URL will work, but I'm not so sure about the 'mailto' link
because IIRC there was some maintenance on the servers which may have an
impact.

Give either a try, let us know of any problems.

POP3.

You're using TB and TB has a bit imperfect IMAP implementation.

IMAP is more suited to a LAN, because you've got to connect to the
server to read your mail (even a second or third time)

Of course IMAP has advantages like being able to read your mail on any
computer (with an imap client), but with the possibilities that TB
offers I prefer POP3.

If you need access to your mail from different locations and
computers, even share your mailbase with others - as would be the case
for corporate mails (i.e. support) - IMAP is a good idea.

Otherwise POP3 is the way to go. Particularly since TB!'s IMAP support
is practically nothing more than an extended POP3. That is, TB!
supports the most basic commands (getting mail and sending mail) of
the protocol. All other features (synchronising, folder creation and
deletion etc.) are not implemented, yet.

CK the future?

I'm a user, just like you. So I haven't any idea where RITlabs wants
to go with TB. But the setup of TB is such that IMNSHO it doesn't make
much sense to have much emphasis on IMAP.

TB is about collecting mail and processing it automatically into
folders, responders, etc. To do so effectively with IMAP you'd need to
copy every filter to every copy of TB, otherwise their use would be
fairly limited.

With IMAP you need to do the processing on the server and the only
thing you need a mua for is to access the processed mail and some
manual operations. That is if you want to process the mail
consistently. Therefor it would be a waste of resources to develop the
IMAP of TB any further.

The advantage to process the same mail twice (via POP3) at two
locations (home and office) is that your interests at both places may
differ strongly. So it would make sense to use two different sets of
filters.

The one advantage of IMAP that I might like is that the mail is stored on
the server. So if I have a PC crash, my mail is still on the server and I
can retrieve it. Although if your provider crashes, are they backing up
their mail servers? Maybe not. Something to think about.

I also have the option of POP and IMAP, and I go with POP. I just leave
the mail on the server at all of my mail client locations, except one where
it downloads the mail and deletes it from the server. That way, I can
still see e-mail wherever I'm at.
