I could tell that Boris's README.txt file was encoded in some form of Cyrillic, but I could not get the Russian text to display properly. I used an evaluation copy of EmEditor Professional 4.05 (http://www.emeditor.com/) and the Russian text came out as gibberish, no matter what form of Russian encoding I selected before opening the file. (My Russian is rudimentary and terrible, but I might have gleaned some information from the README file.) I resolved the problem by using EmEditor Professional to save the signature file in Windows Cyrillic (1251), not as a Unicode file. I also did some thinking overnight before attempting this fix today. I realized that I was doing something that was fundamentally wrong with my signature COOKIE, because only the first line of any signature file, even in English, would appear in The Bat! when I created a new message. Although most of you are Bat veterans, I will pass along my mistake, in hopes that others who might be repeating it will benefit from my stupidity. Apparently, the signature file for The Bat! must be a single line of text, with the newline character ('\n') inserted in the appropriate locations. I was, indeed, using the newline character, but my signature files were on multiple lines, which The Bat! apparently does not like. In a nutshell, make sure that your signature file is a single line of text, but use the newline character if the signature contains multiple lines. (I hope this information will be of help to someone.) I successfully sent an e-mail message with the revised signature in Cyrillic (Windows) encoding to two people using Outlook (and Windows, of course) with Russian support enabled. I want to do further testing, however. As an additional experiment, I also forwarded this same message to the same two accounts, but I encoded my foward message as KOI8-R. Pushkin's beautiful verse was preserved intact. I may try to create a version of the file in Unicode/KOI8-R format, just to see what happens. If the Russian appears intact when I create a new message in The Bat!, I will send the message to the e-mail account that I use with Linux. (I use KMail with Linux, and have Cyrillic support enabled.) If I were clever, I would not have taken so long to resolve this simple issue, but obviously I lack that intellectual attribute! ;-) I still have other concerns about The Bat!, besides the lack of Unicode support, including the lack of a user's manual and the situation with user support, so I have not decided definitely whether or not The Bat! will become my new e-mail program for Windows XP Professional, and let me abandon the security hole also known as Outlook XP/2002. (I have also heard people refer to said software as Lookout.) Anyway, Maxym, I thank you again for your time and your kind assistance. Incidentally, I did use Decode 2.1 to create a transliterated version of the excerpt of the Pushkin poem, although I changed some of the occurrences of the letter 'j' to the letter 'y', as in 'Lyubov'. 'Zdravstvujte', Maksym. Thank you for your message. I must have missed your reply in the TBUDL, which I receive in digest form, but I am not sure why I did not receive your personal e-mail. I will report back to the list, Maksym, with the results of my test. (Thank you, however, for your offer to send me the program via e-mail!) If your suggestion works with recipients running Windows, it will indeed solve the problem with my friends in Ukraine and Russia, who all use Windows 98SE. I assume, however, that the re-encoding will cause problems for people running other platforms, but perhaps The Bat! actually will eventually support Unicode. Finally, Maksym, I find it interesting that Boris works in Tel-Aviv, because I have a friend who teaches and lives in Tel-Aviv, as well as several friends in that part of Israel. Thank you again, Maksym! ('Spasibo'!) :-) 'Vsego horoshego'! Cordially, David P.S. -- I hope the weather in your part of Ukraine is not too cool. The last report that I got from Odessa was of typical autumn temperatures for Odessa. (This weekend, the high temperatures should be at 16°C, with little chance of rain.) -- David M. Re: Russian/Cyrillic Signature File in The Bat! 3.0
Hello, again, everyone. On Thursday, 23 September 2004, I sent a query to this list about a problem that I am having in evaluating The Bat 3.0 as a replacement for Outlook XP/2002 (under Windows XP Professional, SP 1). I believe that my problem stems from the fact that The Bat does not yet offer Unicode support, but I could be wrong. I could easily be doing something wrong, or just plain stupid. ;-) Because I have Russian-speaking friends in Ukraine and Russian (including my fiancee in Odessa, Ukraine), I send many e-mail messages that contain Cyrillic text, which is easy to do with Thunderbird, because I can use UTF-8 encoding (but The Bat is much more powerful). I have absolutely no problems with Russian/English messages in Outlook, but I want a more secure, and powerful, e-mail client. My workaround for the text of my messages is to use a default character set of KOI8-R, but, for some reason, my signature file, which contains an excerpt of a Pushkin poem in Russian, will NOT import into my TB messages: DMD I am using the following cookie setup in my DMD preferences for the account I am using for testing, DMD inserting a new line character (\n) at the end of DMD each line, as instructed by the on-line help, DMD %COOKIE=C:\pushkin-signature-unicode-koi8-r.txt. I used the evaluation version of the Unicode text editor EmEditor to create the signature file. Because I am only able to use my signature file successfully in Outlook, I do not know if the problem lies with my Russian/English text file or with TB itself. (I have the same problem, by the way, with Thunderbird, which is Unicode-compliant!) I apologize for mentioning this problem a second time, but I received no response to my query, nor has RITLabs support offered any suggestions. My decision on whether to use TB hinges, in part, on resolving this problem -- and I would appreciate any suggestions, or even a response. Thank you very much, in advance! Cordially, David P.S. -- I apologize if rementioning a topic is in violation of TBUDL protocol, but we are all aware of the support situation with TB, and the lack of a manual in printed or PDF format. (At the risk of sounding crass, I would LOVE to be able to RTFM!) -- David M. Russian/Cyrillic Signature File in The Bat! 3.0
Hello, everyone. I am evaluating The Bat! 3.0 as a more powerful, more secure replacement for Outlook XP/2002 (under Windows XP Professional, SP 1). Because I send e-mail messages containing Russian/Cyrillic text, any e-mail client upon which I decide must support Cyrillic text. Although I realize that The Bat! does not yet offer Unicode support, I have been able to get it to handle Russian text satisfactorily by setting the default character set for my messages to KOI8-R. My problem comes with my signature file, which is a few lines of Pushkin, in Russian. I have the signature file saved as a separate Unicode/Cyrillic text file, but when The Bat! imports the file, the result is gibberish characters that are not Russian at all. I am using the following cookie setup in my preferences for the account I am using for testing, inserting a newline character (\n) at the end of each line, as instructed by the on-line help, %COOKIE=C:\pushkin-signature-unicode-koi8-r.txt. Should I assume that the problem lies with the fact that The Bat! 3.0 does not offer full Unicode support, and give up on this approach? I can take the text from the same Unicode/Cyrillic file and manually paste it into an e-mail message, which seems to work just fine. Thank you very much, in advance, for any ideas or suggestions!
