M I can even see a 'Paste formatted' option, which I don't know what it
M does but the name seems to suggest something

Unfortunately it doesn't paste formatted from Word but it was so easy to
align all my lists with the Tab button that it only took a few minutes.

Glad you have it solved. Anyway, AFAIR, no text editor gets the
formatting when you copy from Word and paste. But I may be wrong.

That's another useful snippet of information learnt thanks. Although why
Word can't make formatting exportable I don't know. Maybe it's time to
give OpenOffice a go.

It is not a Word problem, you would have the same problem if you go to
OpenOffice. It is a problem between _word_ processors and _text_
processors.

When you copy something from a _word_ processor, that includes all the
extra information that you don't see (i.e. formatting, paragraph
hierarchy, fonts and sizes, colours, possible indexing info, etc.,etc.)
and the word processor doesn't know (it can't) where you are going to
paste that. You may want to paste it just a couple of pages away, or in
another word document, or Follow me?

When you paste something in a _text_ processor, how can it know where it
comes from to understand its formatting, etc.? Does a text processor
have to understand the special coding (formatting) done by MS Word,
OpenOffice, etc.? So, all it pastes are ASCII text characters with the
basic formatting that can be done with ASCII characters like space and
end of line and it strips all other control and formatting characters
(actually combinations) it cannot understand.

That's how it more or less works :)

yes, tabs are copied, but how they display depends of your text editor.
Tab setting in word processors is normally defines in cm or inces, in
text editors you define your tab in number of characters.

They may, but not always. Some times formatting done apparently with
tabs is done by other means, for example paragraph indentation may be
done by setting different margins for different paragraphs.

Maybe that's why, when I copied my tabbed Word doc to SmartBat, the tabs
had no rhyme or reason to them. They were all over the place and I had
to retab within SmartBat itself.

I've just replied to Feli on the same subject. At least I now have my
columns, however I had to do it :-)

In the particular Word document I attempted to copy across, it was
formatted purely with tabs (apart from carriage returns at line endings
of course) but there was no consistency in the copying across, even
though there were only two tabs per line and the tab settings were for
the whole document, no other stray tabs in sight.

There's always something to learn with PCs isn't there? Sometimes good,
sometimes bad but, fortunately for me anyway, I've not had any really
bad moments :-)

Smart Bat column alignment mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

That's how it more or less works :

Sort of...

When Word (or OpenOffice) puts something on the clipboard, it puts it
one there is multiple formats. I know that Words puts it on in plain
text (the clipboard default), RTF, and Word format. When another
program goes to read from the clipboard, it specifies to format that
it wants. SmartBat probably only asks for the plain text. So, whatever
Word puts on the clipboard in plain text is what SmartBat gets.

I don't use Smartbat at all but, have you tried right-clicking just
anywhere inside it to get the context menu? I can even see a 'Paste

Just as a follow up I'd still like some way to tell you if the three
autoformatting, autowrap and justify on wrap are on or off as there's
absolutely no indication as to which way they're set.

Smart Bat column alignment

2005-12-11 Thread Richard Wakeford
Hello,

How do you get columns to align in smart bat?

I have one page which is meant to have columns in it. However Smat Bat
behaves like MicroEd in that, if you don't have line spaces, all lines
become one the moment you start to edit.

do all my editing by copying to Word, making adjustments to the columns,
and pasting back in. It doesn't matter if I use tabs or the space bar or
convert it to columns in Word. It still shows as a misaligned mess when
pasting back into Smart Bat.

I can't write it directly into Smart Bat as I don't want a line space
between each line of information. That would necessitate far too much
scrolling up and down.

It would be good to have the same choices as in MicroEd and to be able
to turn off the autoformat and autowrap facilities.
