Turn Off Period Checking When Disconnected

I have a dial-up connection. I would like to enable periodic checking
of my e-mail accounts. However, it becomes annoying when I am
off-line. The program sounds an error message every time it tries.

How can I set periodic checking so that it *only* checks for new
e-mail when I am on-line.

Go to Options/Network  Administration.

Enable:
  - Dial-Up Connection
  - No automatic dial for periodic checking
  - Use an existing dial-up connection if any

periodical checking and Use existing Dial-up connection (if any) .

This should do it.
