I am continuing to document our old web app security system and write new
documentation for the conversion of the system from VB to J2EE. Flowcharts,
database documentation, use cases, requirements, specs...

I am also starting a project to improve our tech writing practices in my
unit. Mostly asking questions of other Lone Writers at this point.

Re: [TCP] Back On Topic

2007-07-10 Thread Jones, Donna
What am I doing? Thanks to holiday traffic, I'm recuperating from my
longer-than-usual drive from Michigan to Chicago on Sunday. I spent more
than 9 hours driving when I can usually make it in less than 8. Because
I made a few stops along the way, my total trip was 11 hours long. Ugh!

I'm not complaining, mind you. I like my job and am happy that I have
it. But my body just can't take those long drives as well any more.
Ouch!

Donna

(And because people always ask--no, flying isn't a viable option. Even
with the high gas prices, it's still less than half the price for me to
drive to Chicago as it is to fly. For some reason, the airlines think
that the flight from the nearest semi-major airport to Chicago is worth
more than $400. I disagree.)

Re: [TCP] Back On Topic

2007-07-09 Thread Sue Heim
Me, I need to figure out a way to single-source content that is shared
between a main and co-branded product when references to another of our
products is totally interwoven. As in:

Blah blah blah (content for both). Then Yada Yada Yada (content specific to
our product). Then Blah blah blah (content for both).

As in, not easy to share an entire topic. And there are dozens of places. So
the decision is:
1. Do I rip apart the topics, and rebuild the paragraphs that apply to each
doc type?
2. Do I rip apart the topics and add a variable that includes Yada Yada Yada
on the one, and empty on the other?
3. Do I create a copy of the topic and pull out what doesn't pertain to the
one? Thereby forcing me to then manage duplicate topics (changing content in
one means to change in the other -- and yeah, I can flag them both to remind
me to change the other one but still...).
4. Do I frickin' ignore the problem and hope it goes away? sigh

I'm stuck till I figure this one out, and I'm not sure what's the best way
to go. Eenie meenie minie moe!
...sue

P.S. And it's Monday. It's gloomy and it's Monday. I hate gloomy Mondays!

1) Getting ready to head out of town for two days for business. I pick
up the rental car at 3:30 and head up from White Plains to the Boston
area (actually, Hopington, who's only claim to fame is EMC headquarters
and the starting line of the Boston Marathon).
2) Trying to figure out where I'm going to come up with the definitions
for over 200 items for a new glossary document.
3) Populating new topics for a new help system for a new product.
4) Just made reservations for a late dinner in Boston tonight (8:30pm)
with another documentation person to come up with a plan on how we are
going to make up the content that doesn't exist in the specs.

Drove to Perth yesterday (4 hrs), then flew to Sydney (4 hours), then got
delayed (3 hours), then flew to Brisbane last night (1.25hrs). Start work this
morning with a new client whose HQ is in Brisbane. Actually, it's an existing
client that was taken over by another company on July 1. All staff (8 of us)
are here for the week. Their expense.

So... let's get back to technical writing, shall we? :) What is everyone
doing this week?

Me, I am getting ready to launch the TCPwiki today or tomorrow, so watch for
an email about that!

2007-07-09 Thread Suzette Leeming
Finishing up PCI compliance documentation. Rewriting the user manual and
online help for the Loans Mortgages module of our software. Finishing up a
manual on FundServ and how our software interfaces with it. Redesigning
forms in Simply Accounting.

Waiting for repairs to be completed on my car. Waiting for someone to come
and fix a leaky pipe in my house (will involve removing a ceiling). Waiting
for a quote on a new furnace. Shopping for a new car.

Working on completing a video I'm doing for my niece's wedding at the
beginning of August. Breaking in a new kitten and trying to convince my dog
there's nothing to be afraid of.

Getting ready for our company's Chicks with Sticks golf game on
Wednesday. Getting ready to give a workshop on Word next week.

Trying to stay cool!
