Short answer: not quickly.

Long answer: We have a pretty limited amount of sysadmin cycles, and we
are pretty darn busy keeping all the things we have now up and working,
so we don't want to just add services at the drop of a hat.
The two paths I see for a thing like this:

1. We could stand up a cloud instance and let interested people setup
the service and get it all working and that would be minimal impact on
the rest of infrastructure. However, this service could be down anytime
we do maint on the cloud, if it had problems it would be up to the
people who set it up to fix it, wouldn't be monitored or backed up,
etc.

2. We could make it a fully supported service. This path starts by
people packaging up all the server bits and getting them approved and
in Fedora/EPEL. Then we stand up a staging instance do a bunch of stuff
to add HA and monitoring and get everyone up to speed on how to support
it, make sure there's many more than 1 person around who knows it, etc.
Basically our Request for Resources process.

Right. I am not sure what the concern here is with using the provided
service. ;)

We used to run a asterisk service. It ended up getting about 2-3
calls... a month, and some of those were admins testing that it was
working. So, we dropped it, since that was a very inefficient use of our
time. (The orig folks who set it up left, we had to keep maintaining
packages for it and updating things for security issues all the time,
etc).

Anyhow, thats pretty long winded, but basically I agree with Adam. ;)

Is it really necessary? We haven't even run one meeting yet, and in any
case, it's not as if we're going to talk about anything terribly
secret, so what's the problem with using the public hosted server?
Perhaps we can just use meet.jit.si or hangouts for the first meeting
and if we wind up doing a lot of these video/voice chats we can
consider whether we need to request Fedora infrastructure for them...

RE: Propose for onbaording session for new contributors

2016-06-25 Thread Jay S
Hi,

It is a brilliant Idea to have a session that could help the new

contributors to jump on board. I am in. I am excited to learn!

IMO, an IRC session will be more apt.

There are couple of reasons why I feel this way.

Not everyone might have the bandwith to support video / voice calls.

Language barrier - it is easy for non-native English speakers to write and
read text rather than to talk.

Record it for future reference. An IRC log could serve as a simple document
for future reference.

Having an interactive voice/video session has its perks too. But
regarding the use of Hangouts, as Adam has pointed out, Fedora project
will not be very happy about use of any closed / proprietary services
for official purposes. Of course we can call it as
un-official and go ahead with hangouts. Or we can use some other
service.

Just to consolidate the alternate services suggested so far, we have :

https://openmeetings.apache.org/ ( my experience with it wasn't great. )

Mumble

services that use WebRTC like Jitsi Videobridge

join.me ( proprietary)

I have found vector.im to be the better alternate. It is Open Source; it
doesn't require any mundane setup; no additional software required
(works from browser).

If some of you can try it and evaluate, we can go with vector.im or else we can
stick to hangouts for now.

And regarding time, let all of us decide it.

Regards,
deadrat

Hey Adam,

I have tried searching for open source alternatives and figured out that there
isn't much option, so I propose to have it on the Hangout itself with an IRC
temporary channel #fedoraqa-intro after onboarding we can always route them

The open source variants: Mumble (VoIP only), Jitsi Videobridge
(WebRTC).

I'd suggest a Saturday (weekend for most people) around 12:00 UTC (the
middle of 24h). QA group is big and meeting time will be always painful
from someone. And selected time should be good for MVP persons from QA
group.

It's not a problem because all modern meeting services have a text
chat. Hangouts/YouTube AFAIR can transcribe live text-to-speech.

Apache OpenMeetings doesn't works without proprietary Adobe Flash in

I think for very the short term, doing what is easist to get something to
actually happen, is what is most important. Right now there are a lot of
new people and there is already momentum, which we don't want to kill. Also
having experience with a real intro meeting will help us make good decisions
about what we should do longer term.

Just as a note, Fedora is usually uncomfortable with using proprietary
services for official purposes, but I think for an informal meeting
like this it should be no problem.

We could use something like http://whenisgood.net/ to figure out a time
that works for everyone who's interested.

The only other problem with a video/voice service is that some people
may not have the ability to use it, or if English is not their first
language, may be more comfortable with text. If anyone is in that
position, we can arrange an alternative session via IRC or something
similar, so please do speak up if you'd like this :)

Thanks for this idea Sumantro!
