Re: running texconfig on a console

2002-10-29 Thread Christopher Pinon
Thanks to George, Reinhard, and Adrian for their helpful points. Since
the Debian system is an i386, dialog is no doubt what texconfig is
missing. I'll add dialog this evening to verify this!

running texconfig on a console

2002-10-28 Thread Christopher Pinon
Hi again,

I have a question about running texconfig on a console. On one machine
that I sometimes use (Slackware), running texconfig results in a nice
menu of options that you can choose from. On another machine (Debian
Potato), running texconfig simply results in a list of options (no nice
menu). I was wondering what exactly is required for texconfig to
present a menu. I thought at first that ncurses was the requirement,
but the Debian system has ncurses (both 4 and 5) installed, so something
else must (also) be needed.

Thanks,

dvips-ing TETEXDOC.dvi

2002-10-24 Thread Christopher Pinon
Hi,

No doubt this is an FAQ somewhere, but if I use the '-Ppdf' option when
dvips-ing TETEXDOC.dvi, the 'fi' ligatures turn into English pound
symbols. Further processing of the PS file with gs's ps2pdf doesn't
help. Using the '-Pcmz' option avoids this problem. Perhaps I have
misunderstood the reason for using '-Ppdf': should it be used only if
one intends to immediately distill the PS file with Adobe's Acrobat
distiller program? (Since I don't have this program, I can't test
whether the resulting PDF file would be OK.)

Thanks,

Re: xdvi question

2002-07-09 Thread Christopher Pinon

Thanks to those who replied to my question about xdvi. I guess that I'll
just turn off the column of buttons and learn all the keystrokes. It's a
bit too bad (though understandable) that the size of the column of
buttons is hardwired into xdvi. If this were the only worry in life ...

xdvi question

2002-07-08 Thread Christopher Pinon

I may be missing the obvious, but is there a way to make xdvi's column of
buttons shorter (hence smaller) so that it will fit on a small screen?
The geometry setting fixes the window size, but it doesn't seem to affect
the size of the column of buttons (the lower buttons are still hidden).
(I won't say how small my screen is, but I can see just to the bottom of
the Previous button. How many buttons can't I see? :-( )

Thanks,
