[Texascavers] Honeycreek trip canceled
With much regret I am canceling the Honeycreek trip scheduled for Sept 18-19th. It's a damn shame since over 40 cavers from around the state said they were coming. Over the past few days Hermine has dumped 6-8 inches over the entire Honeycreek water shed, and some areas were even more. The Cibolo creek in Boerne which normally runs 10-12 cubic ft/sec peaked yesterday at about 3000 cfs, and it's still at about 800 cfs. That area of the Cibolo and the sinks in the fair oaks area are major contributors to the HC flows in the back of the cave. These flood pulses generally take 3-5 days to peak in the cave after a rain like this, and 3-4 weeks or longer for water levels to get back to normal. There is also a USGS stream and rain gauge downstream of the cave on Honeycreek that shows a 2' rise in the creek, and over 6 inches of rain fall in the past 2 days. Deer hunting season for Comal county begins Oct 2 for bow and arrow and extends until mid January, so we'll have to stay off of the ranch during that time. We'll shoot for a march-april time frame for another attempt at this trip. Kurt
[Texascavers] Kiwi Sink
Reports came in last night that the TS which dumped 5 or more inches of instant rain on Rolling Oaks during the afternoon filled Kiwi Sink to overflowing about 5 pm and washed away the railroad ties surrounding it. There must have been a good whirlpool. The owner got a cell-phone pic of which we are awaiting the DL. Water had subsided by dark but was still flowing strongly. An exploration trip is being organized now. Where is Ernie when we need him? Lightning hit Terry Raines' (well grounded) internet antenna and blew out the router (but not the computers), several circuit breakers, and made the dog yelp. Terry is off-line until at least tomorrow noon or so. His cell phone is still in working order. --Ediger - Visit our website: http://texascavers.com To unsubscribe, e-mail: texascavers-unsubscr...@texascavers.com For additional commands, e-mail: texascavers-h...@texascavers.com

[Texascavers] TCR food.... call for help.
All, Yes, it's that time again! Time to find out who'd like to help prepare and cook food for the masses at TCR :-) We have had a couple of our regular cooks drop out for timetabling reasons so I am looking for a couple of people who will *own* a dish, ie. you take a recipe and look after its preparation on the day. So what are we going to cook? Well, we have been asked to continue the 'theme' theme as people have enjoyed participating and watching the parades, etc. so... After the success of the TSA spring convention food where we introduced Thai, we have decided to try that too at TCR. For those of you who don't, or won't, like that we will also do something more tradition around BBQ or other meat-based dishes. And of course we will also cater for the vegetarians. Suggested menu (feedback please to *me* only, thankyou!) as of today. It *is* a work in progress: Thai side - - Green Chicken Curry - Wild pork fried rice - Watermelon salad/Mango Salad/Cucumber salad (* these have all been at various parties around Austin in the last 9months). BBQ side - - Chicken, pork, beef (or whatever we can get hold of. Anyone have meat in there freezer they'd like to donate? We'll cook anything) - 'Slaw - Salad - Fixin's Dessert - - ? Thanks! And I hope to hear from willing volunteers soon! Stefan -- IMPORTANT NOTICE: The contents of this email and any attachments are confidential and may also be privileged. [NMCAVER] Staging Trip at Fort Stanton Cave
Hi all! At the Labor Day Regional last Saturday, I announced a trip to Fort Stanton Cave on the weekend of Sept. 18-19, open to everyone willing to help out. I've billed this as a staging trip, because what is needed is to stage materials in Don Sawyer Memorial Hall in preparation for the Fort Stanton Cave Study Project expedition Oct. 2-10. This is much the same as what was done at the spring regional at Fort Stanton Cave. We will need to bag up concrete mix, cut HDPE panels, and haul concrete mix, wooden beams, aluminum angles, HDPE panels, and Stainless Steel frames into the cave. We need help with all of this! There is something for all to do! You will recall that the issue is that a dig shaft was dug in the wall of Don Sawyer Memorial Hall in order to make a safe access route to Snowy River. This dig shaft, dug through breakdown on the edge of the room, was lined with plywood and lumber panels. This wooden structure has deteriorated faster than many of us expected. Based on prior experience with these sorts of structures (Big Manhole Cave), we had hoped that it would last more than 5 years before it had to be replaced with a permanent structure, but alas, the wooden structure is being weakened by a severe fungal infection. We cannot let it get to the point where it becomes unsafe! The good news, is that, with the help of many of you, the majority of the wooden structure has already been replaced. There are 22 levels in the structure, and levels 1-16 are done. All the materials for level 17 (except concrete mix for the backfill) are already in the cave. With your help, we can finish this task this year! The bad news, is that the water in the main corridor of Fort Stanton Cave is rising. As of September 1, the water was crotch deep at Sewer Pipe Landing. This is bad news on two fronts: First, it makes the trip back to Don Sawyer Memorial Hall more difficult. But secondly, what will happen if the water continues to rise significantly higher? As of Sep. 1, the water is higher than it has been at any time since the early '90s. We know that in the '80s, the water was high enough so that it was over your head beyond Inscription Rock. At the moment the water appears to rising about an inch every 3 or 4 days. If it continues to rise at that rate through Sep. 18, we're talking about water that is waist deep on most people. (Now it would only be waist deep for a short distance near Sewer Pipe Landing - for most of the trip from Inscription Rock, it would only be ankle to knee deep.) One way of dealing with the water is to separate into different hauling teams: one team could go from the entrance to Inscription Rock (where you must get wet), another from Inscription Rock to Sewer Pipe Landing (where you get out of the water), and a third from Sewer Pipe Landing to Don Sawyer Memorial Hall. WE NEED HELP GETTING THESE MATERIALS BACK TO DON SAWYER MEMORIAL HALL! If we could put this off until the cave dries out, we certainly would. But there's no guarantee that the water level is going to drop anytime soon. If we have a repeat of the '80s, it may be years before we can get back to finish off the shaft! (Remember, Sierra Blanca had 240% of its normal snowfall this past winter!) On our trip on Sep. 1, we noted that the wooden panels still in place were all covered with white fungus. The fungus won't wait. Every day, it will continue to weaken the wooden panels. So - I'm asking everyone who can, to come help on the weekend of Sep. 18-19. Kathy and Dorothy have talked about preparing a meal for everyone Saturday night. I need to know who's coming so we can plan ahead - so if you're able to help, send me an e-mail! Thank you in advance to all that are able to make it! Steve Peerman Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. [ot_caving] Sealing a minor tear in a diaphram
Before you respond with rubber repair kit please consider that it needs to be gasoline proof. Got Harley carb. all cleaned out last night and today mounted it on the bike - only to discover accelerator pump does not work (and has gasoline leaking out of the accelerator pump assembly) Trying to get around spending money on a new diaphram (or possibly an entire carb kit) I'd like to repair the tiny tear I found in it. This surface is NOT the entirety of the diaphram - it is only one layer of it - there is still a strong mesh backing behind the rubber layer. The tear - or crack is only 3 or 4 mm long, and cannot even be seen until the diaphram is significantly flexed. Please advise with a particular substance which may do the job, please. -WaVy
[Texascavers] a backup LED flashlight
Look at the light in the bottom right corner of this link. http://ca.rayovac.com/flashlight/brilliandSolutions_BRSLEDKEY-BMF.shtml This tiny flashlight cost only $ 3.00 plus tax at Walmart. It puts out enough light for you to use around your cave camp, or reading a map, or for emergency use. While there have been similar lights on the market for a long time, they are still around the $ 10.00 range. I just tested it in my back yard, and I could see objects about 30 feet away in the dark. It seems to be constructed good enough to use on a caving trip. Threads feel solid, and o-rings are decent on both ends, meaning it looks like you could dunk it in the water. And it makes a good key-chain light if you want a light that big. It comes with a rugged tiny clip to put your keys on. For what it is designed for, I would have to give it 4 stars out of 5. It loses a star because the light pattern isn't perfect. I bet someone could get to the back of Airman's with just this light, and a pair of AAA lithium batteries.
