Re: [Texascavers] Sinkholes

2016-06-27 Thread Diana Tomchick via Texascavers
I'm half afraid to show this video to my plumber, who's fascinated about the
fact that we are cavers, and loves to regale Bill Steele and I with the Hollow
Earth stories he's read on the Internet. Despite all that, he's a good and
reasonably priced plumber, so we humor him.

If you think these theories are bad, you should look at 25 year-old cell
biology theories about membrane fusion. This video is reminiscent of some of
the wackier, simplistic ideas from that field. The exciting thing is that the
reality (which we're still working on figuring out) is more complicated and yet
quite extraordinary.

I did feel bad for all the people from China and other Asian countries that I
saw swallowed up by the sinkholes in this video,

A excellent piece of pseudoscience lumping together unrelated geological
phenomena. An offshoot of conspiracy theory thinking, scientifically ignorant,
and total BS. Critical thinking suggested.

A fine example of "I found it on the internet so it must be true".

HOWEVER, they have pulled together some fascinating videos of real-time
earth-swallowing events. For that, it is interesting watching, even if you are
not about to be sucked into the bowls of the Earth yourself.

Re: [Texascavers] Juxtlahuaca

2016-06-27 Thread David via Texascavers
In response to DirtDoc's post:

A whole lot can be said about this specific cave and the karst region
around it.

I have been in it and sort of took the Wild Tour. I did not see many of
the passages in the video link that DirtDoc asked to be critiqued.

The narrator has a Chilango accent ( I think ) meaning from Mexico
City. His deep suspenseful voice is intended to add interest to the
video, but I find it exaggerated.Plus he talks too fast for a gringo to
enjoy the documentary.

The background music which I think is Bolivian or Peruvian is too loud and
distracting and the Jaw Harp parts are so annoying.

The handheld camera moves slightly too fast in places and irregular thus
might cause one to have motion-sickness.

The "expert speleologist" all carrying propane lanterns in the cave is
ridiculous, and some wearing tennis shoes.
I bet these are cavers and do not use propane lamps. Plus the
videographer probably did not have sufficient video light, so propane was
the practical choice.

I do not think you should beat on draperies with your hand. Use some kind
of rubber-coated drumstick.Right ? But this guy probably plays them
as good as anybody, if you like the bongo style of playing draperies. I
prefer the style that sounds like a xylophone or Christmas Hand-bells.

Lots of Spanish can be learned from this video. For example, stalagmites
grow on the "suelo."

Does anybody know if these cavers were at Mexpeleo in Acahuizotla ?I
feel like I have met them somewhere. Maybe I probably have seen them in
other videos.

The best part of the video is they show a map of the cave and what part of
the cave the narrator is talking about. Some of it seems slightly
repetitive.

I think the colors and shadows are good for a documentary aimed at
eco-tourist. I watched this on my smartphone, so I do not know if it is
720p or 1080p.

It was great to include some real caving in the footage.

I give it an A-.But they set the bar high enough, so that the next
documentary of Juxtlahuaca will have to include 4K resolution, better
colors and lighting, slow-motion effects, aerial shots by drones, survey
info, historical interviews, better music, etc.

[Texascavers] New Cave Paintings in Mexico

Newly discovered "cave" paintings are creating quite a stir in Mexican

rock shelters; Burgos is east of Linares and north of Cd. Victoria.

[Texascavers] reply to last several post

2016-06-27 Thread David via Texascavers
There is nothing caving related in the post below, just
a rant about personal stuff:

The YouTube video below shows Charlie and caving friends
having a nice dinner in Ciudad Acuna after the Bracketville
TSA Convention about 5 years ago. ( I filmed it with a
cheap flip-phone )

  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR3yiazUdmw

I have camped once at Oakley's place way back around 1988 when
the TSA had an event there.

I am just a recreational caver that loves caves and lives too far from
karst to be able to do normal caving activities. My last real caving trip
was "Eric's River Cave" in Indiana 9 years ago, although I did a little
digging in the entrance of Kiwi Sink a few years ago, and another cave
near Rocksprings.I own some nice caving gear somewhere boxed
away very deep in a rental storage unit, and quite a few new retail
LED headlamps and
flashlights. I have a rusty knowledge of speleology and other
natural sciences.
I know where about 150 non-commercial caves are located, and I have been in lots
of commercial caves and off-trail in at least 4.I could probably
get into "Illusive Pit" near
Candela, Mexico if I really wanted to. I might could even get in the
old popular Langtry caves if I really wanted. And I do know the whearabouts
of a secret cave that blows tons of air, but I can't seem to get an
invite on the dig.
And I would dig again someday in Kiwi Sink if the stars aligned in a divine
Oztotlian way. All of my PMI caving ropes are old now, but have
been in nylon sacks
in a dry rental storage unit for over nearly 20 years. So not sure if
I would use them in a pit or not.My 600 foot rope only has been in one
dry cave entrance.

I plan to get back into recreational caving someday, but only if my both my
physical and mental health improves. My toxic quasi-marriage has severely
interfered with that goal. I hope to make a few more NSS Conventions.

I still do not see how I can make it to Ely, Nevada. I bought a 2008
Toyota Sequoia last week with 5.7 liter engine, 4x4 and have put 600 miles
on it.It seems to only get 14 mpg. I have a deferred
down-payment plan, before
the real bi-weekly payments kick in and have not yet scrounged up the
funds for the final part of the
down-payment. I have been eating cans of pork-n-beans all week
trying to not to
eat out.

At many large caver gatherings, there is often a live performance of musicians.

Arranging this performance is often an expensive logistical headache, and the
end result is never perfect, and there is always a critic or two afterwards
saying what an awful waste of time and money that was.

I have seen a much better way to do this.

Last night, I was at a music performance where each musician in the band
appeared individually on separate 4K monitors performing separately from the
band.

The individual videos were "synced" together using some video software that
appeared to be running in Apple OS X.

The show was pre-recorded and looped, but it was an awesome experience.

All the 65" monitors were set up vertically on a stage near each other, and
each musician performed near-life-size ( maybe feet not showing on the taller
members )

The sound was perfect. And each musician was seen at their best.

Watching a caver-rock band do such a performance would be awe-inspiring and
very entertaining.

This would allow more attendees to see the performance and see it in pieces at
their leisure.

This concept would allow the band time to arrange a fascinating performance.
And the band would get to enjoy the caver gathering instead of working at it.

I hereby propose on June 24, 2016, that someone seriously look into do this at
2017 caver gatherings and beyond.

[Texascavers] comments

2016-06-27 Thread Geary Schindel via Texascavers
I've been indisposed for a few weeks but have caught up with some emails.

Glad to see that David is back posting on Texascaver. It's been a long dry
spell and I enjoy his commentary.

Thanks,

Geary Schindel

[Texascavers] a new cave diving documentary

2016-06-27 Thread David via Texascavers
I think this is new:

 http://divingintotheunknown.com/en

https://www.facebook.com/divingintotheunknown/info/?entry_point=page_nav_about_item=overview

I could not find any film festivals in Texas where it was playing.
It looks like you can order the soundtrack
on Amazon, but the only place I could see the DVD advertised is below:

 http://cdon.fi/elokuvat/takaisin_pintaan-36617131

I think that link maybe be a Finland web-page.
