[Texascavers] UT Grotto Meeting - Feb 1

2017-01-27 Thread Aubri Jenson via Texascavers
Greetings, cavers!

At the next UT grotto meeting (Wednesday, Feb 1) we will have a guest
speaker, Jim Sansom, who will talk to us about the discovery of Inner Space
Caverns. Early in his career as an engineering geologist, Jim had the
fortune of drilling into a cave during the construction of I-35 and became
the second explorer to enter what is now known as Inner Space Caverns. Jim
is a UT graduate, BS Geology 1963. He retired from the State of Texas
having worked for 33 years and continues to consult independently in
central Texas.

The presentation portion of the grotto meeting will be live streamed via
Periscope https://www.periscope.tv/utgrotto at approximately 8:30pm CST
(the actual time will be announced via Twitter @UTGrotto).
***

The meeting is at 7:45pm in Burdine 136. Follow this link to a map of where
the building is located on the University of Texas campus:
http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/buildings/bur.html

For information on Underground Texas Grotto activities, please see
www.utgrotto.org

Before the meeting, gather at the Taco Join on San Jacinto Blvd. This is
the best place to park and meet folks walking over to the meeting. After
the meeting we continue with the decades long tradition to reconvene for
burgers, beer, and tall tales of caving at Posse East! www.posse-east.com

See you there!
Cheers,
Aubri Jenson

his home in Waelder, Texas. We had the additional pleasure of visiting with his
son, Alan and wife Trish, delightful people. At 89, Jimmy is doing well and is
as sharp and personable as ever. Jimmy and I formed a close relationship in the
mid 1950's which has endured to the present. Of several caving trips our most
memorable was the excitement and distinction of being the second group to cross
the "Ledge" in Mayfield Cave (Caverns of Sonora) and explore perhaps the most
beautiful cave in America. This was February of 1956 when I was 21. We also
have some great pictures of our 1959 trip to KICKAPOO Cave on the former ranch
of Tommy Sargent, a neighbor of Happy Shahan, builder of Alamo Village. As some
of you may know, Jimmy is a writer, adventurer, caver, photographer and
probably the most talented artist of his time. I am in the process of acquiring
some of his works. Jimmy and I individually caved (spelunked) with Preston
McMichael during his regretfully short life. My friends and I were greatly
entertained on various camp outs by Preston playing classical guitar which he
did quite well. Jimmy and I have numerous pictures of Preston which were taken
on various outings. Some are at The Devil's Sinkhole, Goodenough Spring, a
rancher's bunkhouse where we were caving and at the shelter caves on the Rio
Grande with the historic Indian rock art. These were great times with two
unique individuals. I should gather all of my caving pictures to donate to the

Madagascar: An Adventure Tale

At

Edwards Aquifer Authority
Training Room
900 E Quincy Street, San Antonio, TX 78215

Mr. Benjy Von Cramon, Independent Documentary Producer, will present his film
on Madagascar: An Adventure Tale. The presentation will occur on Friday,
January 27, 2017 from 11:55 A.M. to 12:55 P.M. in the Training Room at the
Edwards Aquifer Authority, 900 E. Quincy Street, San Antonio, Texas. These are
informal presentations so please feel free to bring your lunch. You may also
contact the EAA at 210.222.2204 or
www.edwardsaquifer.org for additional
directions.

If you are traveling a long distance for the talk, I would recommend that you
call our receptionist at 210.222.2204 that morning to make sure that the talk
is still scheduled. On very rare occasions, we have had to cancel or move the
talk. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Abstract

Independent documentary producer, Benjamin von Cramon, presents "Madagascar: An
Adventure Tale". Part 1 of the trilogy opens with the Crocodile Caves of the
Ankarana on the far north end of the Red Island. Few Americans ever tour this
remote land, never mind head underground in search of Nile crocodile.
Approximately 90 percent of all plant and animal species found in Madagascar
are endemic, including the lemurs, whose dancing in real life brings more to
unscripted adventure documentary than any animated Hollywood feature.

Biography
Benjamin von Cramon is an award winning film maker - His body of work defies
clean titles and easy categories. In 25 years of writing, shooting, and editing
for broadcast, institutional, and private industry, von Cramon recalibrates
between wildly disparate projects, from documentaries filmed in prisons to
stories in Fourth World homesteads to intensely visceral adventure docs deep
underground. The auteur is as comfortable developing content around issues of
great social import as he is problem-solving advanced technologies used to
innovate the art of story-telling.

A Fellow of the National Speleological Society and The Explorers Club, a
qualified stereo rig tech for Element Technica, and a developer for Autodesk
Labs, Reality Capture Group, the arc of his dynamic career reflects a sustained
effort to elevate the latest technologies in their usefulness to education for
highly visual learning experiences. Each of von Cramon's projects are informed
by broad humanities education, grounded in highly physical experiences, and are
inspired by unbound curiosity and tempered hope for the human condition.
Thank you.
