Re: [Texascavers] Green River, KY

2017-08-08 Thread Mike Flannigan via Texascavers

FYI, the location of the dam was:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=37.20658,+-86.26059+%28Coordinates%29=A=en
about 8.8 miles WNW of the main cave entrance.
Historically that dam held back about 9 ft of water.

FYI-
Yesterday, I stopped by the Brownville Dam on the Green River inside the edge
of Mammoth Cave Nat'l Park. The dam is completely removed. IMHO this is great
news. That removal has been talked about for decades and I am sure volumes of
studies have been made. But, late last year the dam begin to fail on the side
of the old mud plugged lock. For safety reasons the dam had to be removed fast
before a sudden huge failure, maybe hurting someone. This spring the project
began and yesterday was the first chance I have had to see it. The old dam
backed up water 17 miles and the difference in water levels above and below was
maybe 4-6 ft.
The dam is gone and only a small rapid is present in the low water conditions.
I was only there a short time. Some concrete from the dam was piled up
downstream on the opposite bank and that was about all I saw from the old dam.
Heavy equipment was on site constructing a gravel parking lot.
This has the potential to open up low levels of the cave for exploration. Dig
out your wetsuits.
And, two, this will help the mussel population in Green River, already the
location of some of the rarest mussels in the world. We may join an Owensboro
Sierra Club outing this coming Sat. at Munsfordville studying Mussels, with a
PhD mussels specialist.

[Texascavers] sort of evolution related

2017-08-08 Thread David via Texascavers
I saw a young man in Houston this week in a store and he barely looked like
your stereotypical homo sapien. He was 6'3" and in tip-top physical
condition. His unique feature was the largest brow-bridge that I had ever
seen. I had never seen anybody that more resembled my vision of our
ancient Cro-Magnon ancestors. I imagine the ladies would be very attracted
to this particular guy.

So out of curiosity, I Googled around for about 3 hours looking at
anthropology photos and anything that might resemble him. I found
absolutely nothing. He did not look like those wrestlers and boxers from
Russia as his forehead did not seem to be angular, but instead vertical
like Elvis.

I did learn from this research that the ancient people of Japan were
totally different than they havebeen for the past 3,000 years, and that the
original inhabitants of Japan are now allegedly extinct.

So I wonder if this young man that I saw was an anamoly, or part of his DNA
contains something lost from the ancient ones ??

The painters that travelled to remote places 300 years ago did an amazing
thing by recording all that diversity, as did the early photographers of
the late 1800's.

Googling all that and seeing the antique images was interesting.

Yes, I'll line up a Shiner beer donation for TCR again once I'm back in Texas
in mid-Sept. I need to know who is picking up and returning the kegs before I
ask for the donation.

Never heard of them. But that isn't a stretch. Deer corn has only Bud Lite.
