Just as an aside, if you google "inside the closed hawaii volcanoes national
park" the youtube video of that is pretty amazing. Not as "wow" as flowing
lava, but for those of us who go to Halemaumau a lot the changes
are rather mind blowing.

Re: [Texascavers] lava related

2018-05-23 Thread Barb
Yeah the news seems to love that fear angle. The fact that most of the island
is just fine doesn't make good copy.
That said, the videos posted are pretty awesome.
It also seems to me that an awful lot of the things we have done in the past
are now supposed to kill you.

Re: [Texascavers] 700 foot pit ?

2018-05-12 Thread Barb
Don says the depth of Na One was measured at 935' from the lip of the pit. The
difference is in the sag of the line in the center of the tyrolean. The pit is
owned by Bishop Estates and they gave permission specifically stating that
nothing be published. Halliday essentially ended access when he published.
Caving in Hawaii is trickier than many places due to landowner and native
hawaiian sensitivities. At the moment we have been sticking to mapping lava
tubes close to home - some quite small - and have the scars to prove it!

One Trick to Catch a Liar
The Beacon
http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL3141/594733d63395133d67a22st01vucI finally have a "tentative" trip itinerary - something that I have not had
in over a year.

I hope to be in the town of Decatur, Texas tonight at 9 pm at the Ramada
Inn.

The link below shows some kind of equestrian business:

http://www.ridersandhorses.com/

The owner of that company responded to my Craigslist Ad.

For some reason their apprentice-ranch-hand ( herein known as The Cowpoke )
can not seem to figure out how to get from the town of Schulenberg to
Alburquerque. So I am highly suspicious as to what Cowpoke's mental issues
are. Can they be worse than mine ??My 6th sense tells me that the
ranch owner is leaving out some negative info on Cowpoke. He did subtly
indicate that Cowpoke is not the talkative type.

The plan is to leave Decatur on Sunday morning by 10 a.m.and head to
Albuquerque and drop off Cowpoke ( hopefully at a location on the side of
our route ), and then head to the NSS Convention in Rio Rancho late Sunday
night.

According to the caver taking us, he is okay with the itinerary.

Aw man, there was a pool? How did I miss that?

At the Howdy party he was seen have a lively discussion with Don (Coons) about
what clothing would be appropriate for a cave expedition to Mars. Oh my.

It lives! Locklear actually made it to the NSS Convention in time for
the Howdy Party. Who had Monday at 5:30 in the arrival pool?

Re: [Texascavers] cave scientist in the news

Ha! Yeah, I learned that lesson a long time ago too.
Wow, that is one of the silliest things I've read in print about cavers in
awhile. If she really did say it, perhaps it is an opening for her, as a
teacher, to become better educated.

You have to be careful what you say when you do interviews with
newspapers. ( Fortunately,
I learned that lesson when I was young. )

In this case she claimed:

“As far as I know, I am the only woman doing exploration and science
in underwater caves,” she said.
“There are some other women who cave dive, but they do it for
exploration only and for a short time only.”

If that is not true, I am sure it was taken out of context, or the
reporter sensationalized it to get
a good story.

As anyone that has been on this mailing list for any length of time,
you'll know that the flood of emails come in cycles and that when the
stars align as well as the moon is in the right phase, we get a deluge
of emails that probably shouldn't be here.

As the list owner, I get sent a few comments every now and then,
sometimes I take action, sometimes I just ignore unless the issue or
statement is repeated, and sometimes it just depends on how the email
strikes me that day or my mood.

Since I took over in 2006, I've always intended for this list to be
self moderated, everyone here is an adult in at least their age, if
not their personality, and 99% of the rude comments wouldn't be said
to the person's face, or in front of a group of almost 300 like this.

If you see a comment on the list that you don't like, please don't
respond to all, send a private email to that person only. There have
been times that I've done this, and others that I'll reply to all, but
I'm mainly doing this to make an example out of a person.

Most of you know, many forget, that we have cave/land owners,
government employees (of our parks and caves) and some very important
people (at least in the caving community) on this list. How you
portray yourself on here reflects on us all. You have created a
reputation that has helped in some cases, and destroyed us as a
community in others. Unfortunately, even through the TSA does not own
this list, but has helped it out financially, it is associated with
this list in some eyes, and because of this, the TSA has a few black
marks against it. Only time will resolve that little problem.

Before this email gets to long, this is a simple request, and its
pretty much common sense.

Stop and think before you hit that send button. Is it relevant to
everyone that is a TexasCaver? Would you say it to the persons face
in front of everyone at a convention?

There are a few people who need to grow up, a few who need to relax,
and everyone else needs to hit the delete key, enjoy the entertainment
and move on :)

If anyone has questions, comments, complaints or gripes, send them to
me, off-list please

Hey David, Thanks!!
Steve is a great friend of ours and indeed, an awesome caver (as is his wife
Rachel). We've been missing them this season in Hawaii - they normally come on
our for a few weeks to map lava tubes but this year things got a little quirky.

This news article is from Saturday:

   http://www.sitnews.us/0210news/021810/021810_caving.html

So how does one become recognized as a state's foremost caver?

By the number of caver Facebook friends they have?

If so, we have 2 foremost cavers in Texas.

I think you would have to hold the prestigious Lew Bicking Award,
to be considered, the state's foremost caver. I can name at
least 2 or 3 active Texas cavers that have that.
