[Texascavers] Change of Location for 2018 TSA Winter Business Meeting

2018-01-02 Thread Robert B via Texascavers
In an effort to be considerate to the TSA Officers and members driving from
Austin, the location of the 2018 TSA Winter Business Meeting has been moved
from Government Canyon SNA to the pavilion at Cave Without A Name. (325
Kreutzberg Rd, Boerne, TX 78006)

The Date and Time of the meeting = Sunday January 7th starting at 10:00AM

If you have any ideas or concerns about the TSA that you would like
addressed but can't make the meeting, please let one of the officers know.

[Texascavers] Hill County State Natural Area Karst Project

2017-11-16 Thread Robert B via Texascavers
Texas Cavers

I am pleased to announce that this Saturday November 18 we start (again)
the Hill Country State Natural Area Cave and Karst Project. (Saturday Only)

The objective for this weekend is to send out small teams to verify that
existing cave location data is correct, and if not, to perform a local
search pattern with hopes of acquiring cave location. Further information
will be provided at Park.

Meeting Time & Location: 9:30am at HCSNA Headquarters (Bandera Tx)

Total number of participants: 10 - 12 persons (3 - 4 teams)

Requirements for participation:
1. RSVP to Rob Bisset (chair...@cavetexas.org)
2. Participants must sign some required waivers and other TPWD documents
(provided at Park)
3. Somebody in each Team must have a GPS and know how to use it. A GPS will
not be provided. Also, each team must have the ability to photograph cave
opening. Bring a camera.
4. You must be a member of our caving community. If I don't know you, or if
somebody can't vouch for you, don't come. Basically, it's not open to
public or extreme caving beginners.

This is not a recreational caving trip. We have work to do to provide the
Park with accurate data on existing cave locations. Once this is done the
Project can move forward with surveying existing or new caves.
Let me re-state this last part. As this project begins, I must keep the
numbers of participants low and the objectives narrow. As we establish a
working relationship with the Park and it's personnel the number of
participants can grow and we should be able to accommodate those with less
experience. Please have patience.

I will be looking for co-leaders to help with this project in case I can't
make a scheduled date.

Regards
Robert Bisset - Chairman Texas Speleological Association

[Texascavers] All Texas Grottos to Check in with TSA

2017-02-02 Thread Robert B via Texascavers
I need all Texas Grottos (officers) to check in with the Texas
Speleological Association.

This includes any somewhat inactive Grottos. I would still like to initiate
communications with you or your group. So help me out here... send this
request to friends, colleagues, cavers.

Reasons for Check In.
1. I would like to have a small recurring section of the Texas Caver
Magazine dedicated to providing current information on all Texas Grottos.
Please provide the following:
   A. Name of Grotto,
   B. Who are the current officers (names w/ email contact)
   C. Meeting times and location
   D. Website link - include Facebook. meet-up or other links if you
want them added
   E. other information???

2. The TSA website is being updated soon and we request the most current
information regarding Texas Grottos.

As names and email addresses are going to be published in Texas caver and
posted to TSA website... I have to ask
Is it ok to publish your names and emails () if not how would you like
folks to contact.
Is there anything you would like add

Deadlines:
For submitting info: I need ASAP. (within a week or two)

Please submit to my attention (both email addresses please)

[Texascavers] Texas Caver Magazine & TSA Fall Business Meeting

2016-10-05 Thread Robert B via Texascavers
TSA Members and concerned Texas Cavers

Many of you have voiced your concern regarding the absence of the Texas
Caver magazine over the past year. For the most part I have tried to listen
to your individual concerns and explain the situation on a 'one to one'
basis either through emails or phone calls. I have been personally
reluctant to utilize the 'Texascavers' listserve or Facebook as a means to
communicate to our caving community about the magazine. As current TSA
Chairman I can longer keep our members and our caving community in the
dark. Hence this note

Our current Editor has produced a number of great Texas Cavers issues over
the last few years. And I am greatful for her efforts. The content and
layout had been professionally edited. However, I (acting as TSA Chairman)
recognized too late that the editor did not have the support needed. This
job requires many people to lend a helping hand. Yes, there were a number
of very helpful proofreaders. But that's not enough to produce our
magazine. This task cannot fall to just one person. As such...

I have been actively searching for a new 'Editor in Chief' and a strong
group of Co-Editors for the Texas Caver Magazine. This team is finally
coming together and our goal is to produce quarterly issues ASAP. We have
the articles and the photos, its just a matter of completing some final
editing/layout tasks and getting it to a printer.

I ask for your patience, indulgence and yes, your help as we transition to
a new team of Editors.

Regarding the TSA Fall Business Meeting
Date & Time = Sunday October 16 - 9:00AM

I hope to see you all at TCR..

Regarding the request for donations to the Honey Creek Road Repair Project.

We have exceeded the request for donations.
As such we are not taking additional donations at this time.

A big thank you to all those who committed funds to this project.
We raised $1800 in 24 hours and have another $500 is available as back-up
should costs exceed expectations.

Arron Wertheim has been informed of this and is proceeding with the project.
He believes that actual costs will come in below the $1800

Re: [Texascavers] Honey Creek Cave Road Repair Project

2016-02-25 Thread Robert B via Texascavers
Joe & texascavers

Thank you for your donation(s). Every little bit helps.

I'll try to answer your questions as diplomatically as possible.

#1. why isn't a group like the TSA taking care of the total cost? They
have ample funds and this type of thing seems right up their alley...
Answer...The folks heading up this project did not directly request that
the TSA take care of the "Total Cost". They did ask that the TSA make a
fair and reasonable donation. The TSA has committed $500.
Further to your question regarding ample funds... (This is where I may fail
in the diplomatic response) The TSA does have funds that it can and does
use for such efforts. However, the TSA as an organization is not in charge
of this 'road repair project' and as such the TSA should not feel obligated
to incur 100% of the costs for which we have no control.

#2. how we keep this from happening? (There is alot of history within your
question...)
Answer...The quick answer is to not drive when wet. Yes, we (the cavers of
Texas) had done much work on the road and ranch. Might we have to do repair
work sometime on the future. Possibly... Hopefully yes! I think as an
optimist. 30 years from now when this repair project is far from our
collective memories, Texas cavers are still exploring Honey Creek and still
have excellent relations with the owner but we screw up the road during
a through trip HC to CWAN & Spring Creek and it's organized by Bill
Steele's granddaughter...
Honestly...I can only hope and work towards continued good landowner
relations today

[Texascavers] Honey Creek Cave Road Repair Project

2016-02-24 Thread Robert B via Texascavers
To Texas Cavers

The following is a request for financial donations for a project to repair
the well shaft road at Honey Creek Cave. This is not a request for
volunteers.

The road to the Honey Creek well shaft is in need of repairs after many
years of use, neglect and damage from last years rain during a major caver
event.

As Texas Cavers directly benefit from access to the cave, and any efforts
at maintaining good landowner relations may enhance our continued access,
we feel repairing the road is in our best interest.

As such, on the weekend of March 5&6 repairs will begin. Equipment and
labor is being donated to this effort but there will be significant out of
pocket expenses. Two (2) bobcat type skidsteers, a backhoe and a large
capacity dump trailer are being donated. Equipment operators are
volunteering their time. However, this group feels their out of pocket
costs such as diesel and equipment hauling costs should be compensated by
Texas Cavers. The necessary heavy duty trucks and trailers to haul the
skidsteers and backhoe are not being donated.
Initial estimates of out of pocket costs = $1500.

Mr. Arron Wertheim has agreed to be the Project Manager. He has contacted
the landowner to work out road repair details and permission. He has also
agreed to incur the up front costs himself, with the understanding that
Texas Cavers will make reasonable 'not to exceed' commitments (donations)
from which he will be compensated.

We are requesting funds from TSA, TCMA, all Texas Grottoes and individual
Texas Cavers.
Funding shall be made in the form of a 'not to exceed' financial
commitment. Upon project completion those donating shall be informed of
their exact amount to be paid based upon actual expenses. Actual funds will
be paid directly to Arron Wertheim after project completion.

Should you feel this is a worthy cause please email me directly (off
Texascavers Listserve) with your committed donation. Robert Bisset (
chair...@cavetexas.org).

Note: The Bexar Grotto has agreed to fund $500 with another $500 should
fundraising efforts fall short.

Thanks

I hope it's permissible to reference a CNN news link

[Texascavers] Water Filter for Toxic Metals

2015-11-06 Thread Robert B via Texascavers
I just want to do my part to ensure my caver fiends good health.

Question...
Can anybody recommend a portable - medium capacity (20 gal/day) water
filter that can remove toxic metals such as lead, arsenic mercury. Those
metals typically found in mines.

The specifications listed for typical water filters leaves a bit to be
desired when it comes to metals.

Would using two types of filtration systems work better. A typical
backpacking filter followed by a run through activated charcoal. ???

Can the water found in the mines at Minas Viejas be filtered adequately for
drinking by large group of cavers.

Other considerations? Advice?

Thanks
Rob

[Texascavers] Tags for Rigging Anchors

2015-10-25 Thread Robert B via Texascavers
Seeking opinions...

Within the greater vertical caving community... what are peoples opinion to
adding a "Tag Plate" to rigging anchors. Especially in a cave where a route
may justify using or placing rigging at same general location.

The Tag Plate would be made from an aluminum strip (maybe another material
???) and have such information as placement date, bolt manufacturer, type,
diameter, depth. Anchor information could be put on there too, but may not
be needed as one can more easily inspect the anchor.

Maybe add a 'Tag #' that could be included in survey notes and map.

This 'Tag Plate' would attach to the anchor/bolt in some manner as to not
obstruct use. Some sort of wire maybe??? Think heavy industry. Every piece
of equipment is Tagged.

If a project agrees ahead of time to use the same type of bolts and
anchors, then Tags could be made ahead of time and installed as rigging
crew sets each point.

Consider this...
You are on the rigging team. You come to a point in a cave where you must
set some anchors.
You notice three (3) other full sets of anchors. They may be in very good
looking condition and the location is perfect... BUT???
Who set these?
When or how old are they?
What kind of bolt did they use?
Is the bolt deep enough, strong enough?
Is it stainless? Galvanized?
Is there corrosion due to dissimilar metals that I cant see?

Would a 'Tag' help you in these situations?
Other info to add to Tag?

Re: [Texascavers] Pedro Elizaldi

2015-04-24 Thread Robert B via Texascavers
I too remember Mr. Elizaldi and bringing cake and other pastries to his
home in Lampazos on our way to Minas.
The caver gang would hang out in Lampazos while Joe Ivy would shoot the
bull with Don Pedro.
Even arriving very late at night, the Elizaldi's would warmly welcome
everyone.
