Subject: [Texascavers] tourist in the news

>From David Locklear

There is a tragic story in the news about an American tourist shot and killed
near Zihuatanejo.

The media is just trying to show that Mexico has gone crazy.

There is something very fishy about this story.

First, he was allegedly outside at 4 in the morning.   Second, he lived in
Mexico permanently in Tijuana.  Yet commuted to work in the US as a city
official.  He obviously knows Mexico better than most American tourist there.

I have been there before, twice.  It was around 2000, but have erased it
completely from my memory banks.  A former Houston caver owns a bed-n-breakfast
there.  His son manages it.   Everybody knows you stay inside after dark.
There are direct flights from Houston to Zihuatanejo.  It is not just some
point on a map.   It is a beautiful place.  I would love to go back, but I am
glad I saw it before the crime increased.  There are likely some excellent
caves within an hour drive of there.   In fact, the Number One cave on my
bucket list is just 2 hours from there - "Resumidero de Mixtlacingo."  Imagine
the Medina River sinking into a big hole and only one group of cavers has tried
to rappel into it only to find another waterfall into a dark abyss.  I was near
that caving area at the Mexpeleo held in 2005ish in Taxco al Viejo.

Anyways,

This victim was apparently staying at a ritzy motel.  It is hard to imagine he
really got shot near the motel, so if he was outside of the tourist zone at 4
am, he was probably doing something unsafe.  There are probably thousands of
rich people enjoying the holiday there, and probably a few dozen millionaires.

Meanwhile, 10 people were shot in Houston last week, even on Christmas Day.

Tonight and for the next three days, My wife and daughter are in Reynosa,
Mexico.  I am home alone near Arcola.  Reynosa is supposed to be one of the
most dangerous places in Mexico according to the news media.   She just called
and said she was eating delicious "gorditas."   They know to not leave the
house after dark.  Life should not be this complicated.   On one hand, it is my
job to protect my daughter.  But on the other, there were dozens of other ways
I would have prefered to spend NYE and my time off work.

I do hope to go on a road-trip to the Sierra Madres in 2018 in my Sequoia.  I
am concerned about the safety and security preparations for that, but I also
have to stay vigilent in Houston around ATMs and gas stations, and bank parking
lots.

Subject: [Texascavers] caving historical date trivia

Here is an idea for someone looking to write an interesting article for a
caving newsletter:

List in chronological order by historical date of interesting things that
happened in the caving world along with photos and maps and diagrams. Even
better, make it a web-page with hyperlinks.

Here is an example:

What happened on the date below:

 September 12, 1940

I bet someone has already done most of the leg-work. There is probably even a
book or books with interesting historical info.
