[tw5] Keyboard only searching -- go to first match with just keyboard input

2018-12-24 Thread Kyle Pulver
I've been really digging into tiddlywiki5 and using it for a bunch of
projects, but one thing that I cannot seem to hack my way around, or find
any sort of solution for, is making the search functionality faster and
less clunky.

In a lot of note management software I've used, often times searching is
done by a keyboard short cut, typing, and then hitting enter to navigate to
the first result.

Beyond that, using tab or the arrow keys to navigate to a result further
down the list.

Is there a way to get this behavior in tiddlywiki? I've seen a lot of
search plugins and keyboard shortcut things but none of them seem to be
addressing this functionality.

The flow I'm looking for is:
1. Some keyboard shortcut to start the search (ctrl + space?)
2. Start typing the search, say I'm looking for the tiddler "ingredients"
and I start typing "ing" and "ingridents" pops up in the list of matches as
the first result.
3. I want to now just hit the enter key and have navigate to the
"ingredients" tiddler

100% keyboard and no mouse involved!

This is probably the most major thing on my list of cons for using
tiddlywiki when comparing to other brain organizers, so I'm really hoping
to be able to get this working!

thanks~

In defence of tiddlywiki it somewhat documents itself. A few tools and some
documentation tiddlers could help. Especialy with accessing the css elements

[tw5] Tiddly-wide search and replace?

2018-12-24 Thread TonyM
Sebastian,

One way to do it is to export all tiddlers containing the search string as a
json file. Then you can edit this in a text editor such as notepad ++ and use
its search and highlight and scan throught to make sure there would be no
accidental changes. Then search and replace, backup you wiki, import the json
and overwrite the existing tiddlers.

[tw5] Zoomin Story View odd behavior

2018-12-24 Thread Damon Pritchett
I had my TW in Zoomin mode under the Story View control panel tab and have
noticed some strange behavior when editing a tiddler. If I edit a tiddler
and then switch to another tiddler while leaving it open for edit and then
come back to the tiddler I was editing, the size of the tiddler is quite
short vertically. When I start typing in edit mode, the tiddler will resize
to what it originally was. Nothing adverse happens other than the size of
the tiddler. The lower right corner of the edit window to resize does not
work when this happens. Has anyone noticed this behavior?

Thanks,

Damon

If you make a tiddler tagged with $:/tags/Stylesheet and contents

.tc-tabbed-table-of-contents-content {
height: 300px ;
overflow: scroll ;
}

then this will force scroll bars whenever the content goes over 300px. You
can change it to a higher number as needed.

Perhaps someone will be along with a more elegant solution.

Eric,

Thank you! You are really a very good instructor!
Like always your explanation was great!

Randy,
Yes, it is hard to find good documentation for TW. But it should be noted
there are a lot of stranded work on it. It will take time to learn where
you can find them. The good point is that, the people in TW forum are
really kind and put their time to answer our questions one by one.

Cheers

[tw5] Tabbed Internal TOC - scrollable?

2018-12-24 Thread Damon Pritchett
All,

I really like the Tabbed Internal table of contents, but I do have a
question. Would it be possible to make the right side of the tiddler where
the text is scrollable independently of the TOC on the left to accommodate
larger content?

Thanks,

Damon

Re: [tw5] Re: Nine failed attempts to make a permalink

2018-12-24 Thread 'Mark S.' via TiddlyWiki
But Jeremy showed you how to do what you asked for in post #2. If you show
your tweet code, maybe we could tweak your tweet.

Your expectation that wikitext will expand inside of strings seems to be at
the core of your problems. Many computer languages suppress expansion of
terms and variables inside of strings. Some have rules that allow some
kinds of expansion inside of double quotes, but no expansion inside of
single quotes. In TW, wikitext doesn't expand inside of strings.

The main, easily explained work-around is to use concatenation. Here for a
terribly butched tutorial see
"https://tiddlywiki.com/#Concatenating%20text%20and%20variables%20using%20macro%20substitution;

A newer approach is to use the WikifyWidget, which allows text inside of
strings to become expanded.

Start here: https://tiddlywiki.com/#Using%20Stylesheets

Basically, you just create a tiddler (any title) containing your desired
CSS, and tag it with $:/tags/Stylesheet. That's it. The CSS is
automatically applied as soon as you finish editing the tiddler.

To create print-specific CSS rules, use the @media CSS syntax:

@media print  { ... print-specific CSS rules go here ... }

Of course, by default, printing will show all rendered elements of the
page. To limit the printed output, you need to decide which elements are
to be excluded from the output, and then add rules to the print-specific
definition to hide those elements. For example, suppose you want to print
tiddlers but omit the tags from the output. You could write:

@media print { .tc-tags-wrapper { display:none; } }

Note: in most browsers, you can find the class name for a TiddlyWiki
element by right-clicking on the element and select "inspect element" from
the popup menu. In this particular case (hiding the tags), inspecting a
rendered tag on a tiddler takes you to a span with a class name of
"tc-tag-label". Working up from that element, you will find a containing
element called "tc-tags-wrapper" that surrounds the entire tags display
area (not just the specific tag you clicked on). Hiding THAT element hides
ALL the tags in ALL tiddlers.

For hiding specific pieces of tiddler content, define a CSS rule (e.g.,
".hideForPrint"), like this:
@media print { .hideForPrint { display:none; } }

Then, within your tiddler content, you can use it like this:
@@.hideForPrint ... screen-only content goes here... @@

When displayed on-screen, you will see the enclosed content, but when
printed, the enclosed content is suppressed.

This should get you started in the right direction. enjoy,

2018-12-24 Thread @TiddlyTweeter
If you looking to understand CSS in TW which is actually very easy ... but
DIFFERENT.

CSS in TW is all internal and in TW we have SWITCHES to toggle style sheets
all held internally.

One TW can hold MANY stylesheets you can switch between.

We also have overrides to enforce both local and global specific styles
that can be applied to one or many Tiddlers

Its basically a CSS laboratory of flexy style.

To understand it better I suggest looking at BRICKS plugin
... https://tid.li/tw5/test/bricks.html

[tw5] New to TiddlyWiki - cannot find clear documentation as to how to massage a stylesheet just for printing.

2018-12-24 Thread Randy Burgess
I found someone's effort at improving styles when printing
here: https://gist.github.com/ssokolow/1110618

However, although I have done a lot of web site coding in the past,
including with CSS, for the life of me I cannot find any clear
documentation anywhere at all (I have searched threads in this forum, the
existing documentation, and also Google at large) about how styles are
managed in the current version of TiddlyWiki (which I have just installed,
and am running on Mac via TiddlyDesktop); and also how a stylesheet might
be restricted to printing only.

If there is some special place where all this is explained, I would be
grateful for where to find it.

thanks -
RB

[tw5] Re: Simple Android App for TiddlyWiki

2018-12-24 Thread Ton Gerner
Hi all,

I got it working on my old Nexus 5 with Android 6.0.1.

> The latest version should make that folder now if it's missing ... (I
hope)

I had to add a Documents folder and then got the 'access denied' error.
I thought it had to do with creating the Documents folder on my PC (phone
conected to PC), but could not see or change permissions over there.
Thanks to @TiddlyTweeter I found the 'storage' setting.

One strange thing: Going from Portrait to Landscape (turning the phone)
does reload the TiddlyWiki file!

Keep up the good work.

Thanks,

Ton

[tw5] Re: Tiddlywiki on old mobile devices

2018-12-24 Thread @TiddlyTweeter
"Old" is fascinating now.

By old we have come to mean "a few years".

I seriously agree its a good thought to save to perfectly functional
hardware ... the central issue is that the OS of the updates frustrate
backwards on smart-phones BY DESIGN.

This is far less a browser issue than a system issue.

The truth is that "we" (those tech companies) WANT to force you to buy new
hardware.

For instance most smart phones COULD update to now but are designed not to
permit it.

Its part of needing to rail about the system IMO.

[tw5] Tiddlywiki on old mobile devices

2018-12-24 Thread Gracius
Tiddlywiki5 has worked very well in the past on older devices - mine is an iPad
mini 1st gen. However, many popular plugins don't maintain support (TiddlyMap
is an example of one that is actively maintained, but that only works on newer
devices). The problems often have to do with older versions of JavaScript
running in Safari on these devices, and TW using I've seen problems with CSS
and JSON as well.

With the advent of Bob, node.js and other solutions running TW on home servers,
the ability to use TW on older devices laying around seems like it would be
important to some folks.

Might there be enough interest in this to motivate regression-testing of new
releases of the core on older devices? I'll do my best to provide feedback.
5.1.18 might have had a couple of issues but it wasn't clear if those were due
to plugins, but 5.1.19 is fine. 5.1.20 prerelease throws a JavaScript error
"element.getAttribute" is not a function". As for plugins, I suppose should
contact the developer directly

*Very interesting thread.*

It kinda pins down the issue of how to do galleries.

Magnus is better than he thinks he is.

Regarding galleries I can't do the code but can comment on different
approaches ...

-- The one by one Tiddler method (excellent detail)

-- Via Data Tiddler (compact)

-- Via auto-generated number (good for very large photo sets that are
numbered sequentially ... meta-data is more complex, but you don't need any
specific Tiddlers for the images).

[tw5] Re: Nine failed attempts to make a permalink

2018-12-24 Thread Joe Armstrong
Actually, I never mentioned what the original problem was.

I want to add tweet buttons to the bottom of each of my blog articles.

The titles of the articles are strings - here's a festive example of a
title:

 "2013-12-24 Present wrapping"

(The quotes are not part of the title)

My original blog page is at

https://joearms.github.io/published/2013-12-24-present-wrapping.html

And at the bottom of the page is a tweet button (try clicking it)

My converted blog (prototype) is at

https://joearms.github.io/tw/share/output/index.html#2013-12-24%20Present%20wrapping

Sans tweet button :-(

I still haven't a clue how to do this.

The source tiddlers are in

 https://github.com/joearms/joearms.github.io/tree/master/tw/share/tiddlers

If anybody fancies a poke around :-)

Best festive wishes to anybody reading this

Cheers

/Joe

[tw5] Re: Timimi plugin - released for firefox/chrome/chromium in linux/mac/windows

2018-12-24 Thread @TiddlyTweeter
Riz, from my point of an end-user who just wants to get on and use TW I
think Timimi is a superb piece of work ...

1 - For NEW USERS of TW I think its a godsend (FF now, other main browsers
later) as it shifts the configuration of Save and Backup to a Browser
extension in a design that will be familiar to them. This potentially eases
a lot the route to take-up. *It simplifies initial setup significantly.*

2 - The ability to run SCRIPTS (i.e. activate external programs/procedures)
built-in into the same package is incredibly useful. It brings some of the
utility that Jed's Bob has, but without needing its more complex system.

3 - The BACKUP system that can use "Towers Of Hanoi" logic (i.e. deletes
backups you don't need) is, again, optimal for smooth use.

4 - The explicit attention to SECURITY and explanation of the approach is
excellent: https://ibnishak.github.io/Timimi/#Security%20and%20Privacy

Many thanks!

[tw5] Re: Simple Android App for TiddlyWiki

2018-12-24 Thread @TiddlyTweeter
BTC (& Mark S.)

I now got it working. Android 8.0.0. Looking good. FWIW ...

1 ... different versions of Android display settings for Apps differently
so once you installed it you maybe need hunt around a bit if you need to
modify permissions.

2 ... initially I got the error when I ran TW app. of
"net::ERR_ACCESS_DENIED. I changed the Permissions on TW app. to allow
"Storage". Then it worked.

I have other comments regarding functionality ... but "later" after I used
it some days. Ok?

Danke mille!
