Nice, that I could use for Looking Glass-- a browser based RP adventure

2019-01-19 Thread 'Mark S.' via TiddlyWiki
Point #3 is obviously true. But once you have a feature ... it sure is
hard to let it go ;

I don't understand Point #4. You can still use TW in a tab, even if it's
being served up by node. Having it served up in node means that you can
have it served up not just in your browser, you can have it served up in
more than one browser (like FF and Chrome at the same time) and even on
other devices (assuming you're not in a dangerous coffee-shop scenario).

It seems likely that TW is as future-proof as anything else. Will people
even be using web browsers in 25 years? Who knows? There seems to be a
strong movement away from desktop style technologies and toward
application-based mobile technologies. Time will tell.

All difficult questions, but like you, I like browser based aspect, so I
say go with TW till you find *Ash durbatulûk* (BlackSpeech for one to rule
them all, also the name of one of my TW's). Jeremy created something I was
trying with frames so TW serves me well but I'm used to modding things to
fit my purposes but I can understand people not wanting to take time away
from their creative pursuits to do so. It's hard to find software tailored
to everyone's unique needs or to provide everything desired.

[tw5] I want to use TiddlyWiki again, but have some doubts, and thoughts.

2019-01-19 Thread Suzanne McHale

   - Still seems to be no way to generate single static pages for each
Tiddly aside from the convoluted Node.js method via the command line (see
   my posts at

https://groups.google.com/forum/?nomobile=true#!searchin/tiddlywiki/Suzanne$20McHale%7Csort:date/tiddlywiki/vTqF5EEHJE0/N6lcK2W6BAAJ

)

   – that is not a beginner-friendly method!
   - Javascript-based tag pills do not work in exported static HTML page.
   - "Feature creep" – TW is getting more and more features added to it,
which is adding to the basic file size.
   - I want to use TW as simply as possible, in its original intent – as a
browser-based program. I have my browser open all the time when on my PC,
and it is very convenient to switch a tab to my TW, rather than the other
methods of using it via a server, or a stand-alone program such as
Tiddlydesktop. Will TW be able to be used like this into the future?
   - Is TW still future-proof (as much as a program can be)?

Despite my trepidations, I still like the program and want to be able to
use it (have to admit that I spend a bit of time "playing" with it!). I
still have not found the "one program to rule them all" when it comes to
writing and recording my data and creative work, but TW has a lot of
elements I like. (Dokuwiki is another wiki I like, but it is more complex
and requires a server to function.)

Certainly : ) it's simple enough to paste here. On note though, the
colors/theme you see in my screenshot is deceiving. I'm using the basic
Vanilla tW theme but my system is set up with Windows high contrast
inverted which reverses all the Vanilla colors.

The tiddler is mainly Vanilla with a TW styled table-- each count section
in a cell.

The CSS (which is in a general stylesheet tagged tiddler to work throughout
the wiki) for the bordered numbers:
*(you can change the "rags" prefix of the class to what you may prefer)

/* span bordered small bold numbers text*/
.ragsspannumb {border:solid 1px; border-radius:4px; padding:0px 4px 0px 4px;
font-size: smaller; font-weight: bold;}
.ragsspanboldnumb {border:solid 2px; border-radius:4px; padding:0px 4px 0px
4px; font-size: smaller; font-weight: bold;}
.ragsspandoublenumb {border:double 3px; border-radius:4px; padding:0px 4px 0px
4px; font-size: smaller; font-weight: bold;}
.ragsspandottednumb {border:dotted 1px; border-radius:4px; padding:0px 4px 0px
4px; font-size: smaller;}
.ragsspandashednumb {border:dashed 1px; border-radius:4px; padding:0px 4px 0px
4px; font-size: smaller; font-weight: bold;}

for bordered text spans without the reduced font:

/* span bordered normal text */
.ragsspan {border:solid 1px; border-radius:4px; padding:0px 4px 0px 4px;}
.ragsspanbold {border:solid 2px; border-radius:4px; padding:0px 4px 0px 4px;}
.ragsspandouble {border:double 3px; border-radius:4px; padding:0px 4px 0px
4px;}
.ragsspandotted {border:dotted 1px; border-radius:4px; padding:0px 4px 0px
4px;}
.ragsspandashed {border:dashed 1px; border-radius:4px; padding:0px 4px 0px
4px;}

and the tiddler code (repeated from post above)

<$count filter="[tag[*Area]]"/>

<$count
filter="[tag[*Area]workstatus[complete]]"/> Geo Areas

[tw5] Re: A beginners question about nested macros

2019-01-19 Thread TonyM
Joe,

Using Mohamads suggestion of using macrocall is one way to pass a value to
a macro when that value comes from another macro or variable. It is however
possible to reference the value in <> without putting it in the
parameters as $(text)$ (inside the macro)

\define foo()
fooStart $(text)$ fooStop
\end

As long as you have set <> this will work.

There are ways to test if text is set and provide a default value if it is
not as well.

Tony

[tw5] Re: Railroad Diagram plugin

2019-01-19 Thread TonyM
Damon,

Given the nature of railroad diagrams as Thomas and Mario say, it may not
illustrate what you want, however there are a number of visualisations
available in tiddly-wiki. Also if you have something that is available in
CSS you can include it at tag the tiddler $:/tags/Stylesheet

save
and reload and you can use the CSS.

See here for some of these, I expect you may find something suitable, also
look as tiddlymap to more sophisticated ones

[tw5] Re: Railroad Diagram plugin

2019-01-19 Thread Damon Pritchett
Hi Thomas,

Generally I would agree, but there are instances where a branch line goes
off and ends such that there would be two ends of the line. For example,
you start at station A, but you have the option to go to station B or C,
but you wouldn't go through B to get to C and vice versa. That's the idea
I'm trying to get to.

Cheers,

Damon

Hi Damon,

If I remember correct – I searched for it myself some time ago –, this is

someting like: The diagram shows the way from (railway) station A to
station B. And you can’t start at C if you are at A ...

[tw5] Re: General Form for a Macro Repeating Macro?

2019-01-19 Thread Tiddly Novice
Mostly what I was trying for was just a general purpose repeater. Sort of
like a For Loop from Java or Basic, except for Wikitext instead. Of course,
since TiddlyWiki can just use a javascript to loop things as needed, I
guess the best option for me right now is to just use javascript when I
need stuff like that. Anyway, I've figured out what I needed to do for this
part of my self-imposed training assignment so I can get to the next part.
Thanks.

[tw5] Railroad Diagram plugin

2019-01-19 Thread Damon Pritchett
Hi folks,

Has anyone played with the railroad plugin very much yet? I've spent a
couple of hours on learning it today and so far so good. One thing I'm
wondering it can it do two branches on the left combining into one on the
right. Hopefully, the stuff below will illustrate what I mean.

So here one diagram I generated:

What I haven't been able to figure out is how to do something like this:

--start1---|
   |nextend---
--start2---|

Is it possible with the current plugin?

Thanks,

Damon

[tw5] Re: A beginners question about nested macros

2019-01-19 Thread Mohammad
Use it as below.

<$macrocall $name=foo x=<> />

But this is not nested macro! By nesting it means a macro inside another
macro as internal macro.
Seems this not possible in Tiddlywiki.

[tw5] Re: So overwhelmed...node.js on a godaddy shared hosting site?

2019-01-19 Thread Jennifer Pritchard
Ok, so I'm pretty sure this on the right track, except...

(right now, I'm totally ignoring the permissions issue. I just want to get
it running, period, and I'll worry about the rest later. I'm also not
going to worry about Bob until I get this first part nailed down)

When I follow all the standard instructions to install node.js itself, it
creates all the node related info in a folder called .nvm. This means that
all the tiddlywiki related files are automatically under
/home/myusername/.nvm/versions/node/v10.15.0/lib/node_modules/tiddlywiki

So running (from putty) "tiddlywiki folderwhereiwanttokeepmyTW --init
server" creates a folder by that name under /home/myusername/public_html
(here's something I have control over, since it'll just create the folder
wherever I happen to have cd'ed in at the moment) and it has just 1 file in
it (tiddlywiki.info) and 1 tiddlers folder with a storylist.tid in it.

Next, I run the "tiddlywiki folderwhereiwanttokeepmyTW --listen port=3000"
(that's another thing, I figured out that godaddy wants everything to
listen on port 3000. This requires that I put a .htaccess file in
/home/myusername with a "RewriteEngine on" and "RewriteRule (.*)
http://localhost:3000/$1 [P,L]" in it). It spits out confirmation that
it's serving correctly on port 3000...but then I go to view it and I just
get a 404 page. Interestingly enough, when I kill the session, the page
changes to a "server is temporarily unavailable to service your request"
message, so it's like *something* is happening *somewhere*.

To take a step back a bit, I installed the standard app.js test script to
my public_html file, ran it using "node app.js", and it worked as expected.

What in the world am I missing?

[tw5] A beginners question about nested macros

2019-01-19 Thread Joe Armstrong

I have two macros

\define text()
A line of text
\end

\define foo(x)
fooStart $x$ fooStop
\end

So

<> is replaced by "A line of text"

and

<> is replaced by "Start abc fooStop"

But <> >>

is replaced by "fooStart <>"

And NOT "fooStart A line of text fooStop" as I had expected.

After a lot of head scratching I realised that this means that the argument
(x) to foo is the
string "<>" to the left
of the start "<<" of the macro and not the second occurrence.

ie. "<<" and ">>" do not properly nest as I had expected.

This seems like a pretty big pothole for a beginner to fall into ...

So what is the accepted idiom for using a macro result
as the input argument to another macro - how does one chain macro calls
together?

Cheers

/Joe

You are welcome Mario.

I hope I can document those solution in the group I understand.
I see many great solutions were buried in this forum and I hope

I hope superuser, expert people have a look and let me know where the
solutions can be improved or there is better solution.

I think TW-Scripts can play role in TW community as a learn through

Re: [tw5] Re: New plugin: Locator: Discover and search by context (tags)

2019-01-19 Thread Brian Theado
Bimlas,

Nice work and it looks very useful! Two thoughts I had while playing with
the demo:

   1. "Filter the list by the tag" - This button I kept trying to click on
it as a toggle. IOW when it was faded, I click on it and it applies the tag
as a filter and the icon turns dark and moves above the separator line. In
that state, I kept wanting to click on the darkened icon in order to
disable the tag filter and move it back down below the separator line. I
found I could click the bottom item in the breadcrumb to get the same
effect, but I think it would be helpful to be able to remove the tag filter
   both ways.
   2. Clicking the tag pill navigates to that tiddler. This is different,
more limited behavior compared to clicking a standard TW tag pill. The
standard behavior of the tag pill is to display a popup list of tiddlers
links with the tag itself as the first link and the tagged tiddlers as the
remaining links. By keeping this standard behavior, the user can still get
the same behavior you implemented by clicking the first link in the popup.
In addition, it lets the user see all the tiddlers containing that tag.
That helps the user see which of the items in the locator display have the
tag and also see which items not in the locator display have the tag.

We actually accomplished this over at reddit. Most announcements are
reported there with relevant links and tagged with category. You can click
on a category and see all posts tagged by the same.

I have been absent from the reddit side for some time. But the community
there is growing (460) strong now and I am seeing aside little more time
now that I don't have a major TW related project to work on.

We now have the range operator as well.

List is to me the key to tiddlywiki because through it and filters its all
about sets, sets of tiddlers, tags, fields or any other list.

It is for all or for each we use list to repeat anything macro or otherwise.

Re: [tw5] Re: [Demo] TW5 for Readers and Writers

2019-01-19 Thread Watt
I had another look Thomas, and your explanations helped, but you need many more
explanatory signposts up on the site. I really like the complex functionality
you are working towards. It is a complicated beast though, a bit like a
powerful sports car with all the engine and mechanics on the outside and the
sleek, polished bodywork hidden underneath. It may not be ready for the luxury
showroom yet but when the mechanics are tuned and hidden away Reader/Writer
could be a classic vehicle.

I'm using a phone to look at it so that makes navigation harder. If I sound
negative it's because I'm trying to drive this baby manually, with one thumb
and one eye on the road. You need more 'driverless' options on it!

The short version for Reader; I want kindle style interaction, but with
super-charged annotation/clipping options and easy import.

The over long version;

I'm going to go Marie Kondo on your visuals Thomas. They don't spark joy. First
up is the landing screen. Where is it? I'm an idiot and a phone zombie, so when
I open an app (I'm calling it an app) I need to see a blank screen with 2,
maybe 3 buttons. That's all I can handle.

On this app I'd like the buttons to be 'Reader', 'Writer', 'Settings'. I don't
want to see a sidebar, obscure tabs or any TW mechanics buttons, I don't want
to know about config options (yet). I'd prefer not to have any text, just icons.

The reader mode icon that you have at the moment doesn't say 'Read' to me
Thomas. Here's an alternative from the Noun Project on WikiMedia https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Education_-_The_Noun_Project.svg";>https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/28/Education_-_The_Noun_Project.svg/512px-Education_-_The_Noun_Project.svg.png";>
(I hope that link works on GGs).

You don't have a Writer icon yet, but you need one. Here's an e.g. from the
same source https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Learning_-_The_Noun_Project.svg";>https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ec/Learning_-_The_Noun_Project.svg/512px-Learning_-_The_Noun_Project.svg.png";>

imo, on startup these 2 (or similar) should be all I can see, plus a Settings
Cog icon. No sidebar, no title - nothing. If I want to know what the app does I
go to Setttings, then 'About'.

Marie Kondo is very big on boxes. She says every object should have a home, use
smaller, open top boxes within larger containers to categorise objects by size
or function and fold/store everything in a way that allows it to be seen once
the biggest container is opened.

'Reader', 'Writer', 'Settings' are your 3 top level containers. Everything else
should fold away in progressively smaller boxes beneath them. You use MyStory
as a box label. I think you need to change that everywhere to 'Writer'.

You know how Marie Kondo takes all the clothes out of the cupboards and piles
them up in a mountain on the bed? First of all the owners are amazed at how
much stuff they've got. Next they have to go through each item, discarding the
ones that don't spark joy, and then categorising the others, folding them in a
special way, before putting them in smaller boxes according to type.

I think that's what you need to do with your sidebar tab 'containers'. You've
got everything in there, jumbled together, very difficult to find, not
obviously labelled by function or findable for a newcomer. Clear instructions
are difficult to find. If you threw it all into a pile you'd be amazed at how
much is there but you have to go through it, discard some, re-categorise some
and break it all down into smaller units, each with their own 'box'. A 'help'
pop-up for each box might be necessary.
Then you need easy, clearly labelled navigation between each box. Personally I
hate the sidebar in TW, imo everything you have in the sidebar should go under
'Settings' and that should have a page of its own.

Ok, imagine we've got a 3 button landing screen. When I click on the Reader
icon I don't want another tiddler to open below. Scrolling on a phone is out
for me. (Sidebars are out too. Scrolling through a paragraph list in a sidebar
or getting dropped back to the end of a book long story river, with a sidebar
on top is really out! (A 'return to top' button is essential if you're
determined to keep the scrolling).

On clicking Reader I'd like the 3 icon landing screen to disappear and a simple
Library page with these options to appear;
'List of Titles'
'Import New title'
'Writer' icon
'Settings' icon.
Back and Forward arrow heads for navigation.

We're in standard kindlish e-reader territory now.

If I click on the 'Writer' icon it should take me to the top level of the
writer mode. It shouldn't toggle the 'reader library' into a 'writer library'.
The exit from one function to the other has to be clear. Again, no story river,
no sidebar, no headings. Each new page/screen replaces the last.

('View in Writer' is a different thing and needs a different icon.)

If I click on a

The TWCore macro parser expects the parens of the macro parameter list to
*immediately* follow the macro name, without any intervening white space.
You have a space between "Sitzungen" and the open parentheses of the
parameter list. This prevents the parser from properly recognizing the
macro definition, so it is just being output as if it was normal wiki
content in that tiddler.

[tw5] Notes on experimenting with external content

2019-01-19 Thread barrowgloom
Just some observations while determining ways to display external content
with my personal project TW. Doesn't include local hard drive content--
that will be a separate note because with local drive content I have had
more success and essentially indexed all my project files (couple hundred
files of many formats) with TW where I usually don't have to leave my
project TW or Firefox to work with files unless I have to go to Gimp,
Photshop or Inkscape.

Anyone's observations/input is very much welcomed.

Displaying external Web based content:

(testing in progress, using Firefox 64)

A. *Viewing in an iframe in Wiki*:

Note on Google app's- when accessing a site using a javascript login (an
URL ending in .jspa), a "javascript not enabled" error message– so
apparently javascript has issues operating in iframes, at least with
Firefox 64.

   1. Google Doc's will display and can be edited in an iframe
  - if you're not signed into Google which would grant edit permission.
  - PROBLEM, if signed into Google, the sheet displays but with a
"JavaScript isn't enabled in your browser, so this file can't be opened.
Enable and reload." message which prevents not just editing but scrolling
  the page.
  - doc permissions influence these results, ie an "edit" in the URL.
Not tested on Google app assets made public.
   2. Google Sheets will display in an iframe
  - if you're not signed into Google which would grant edit permission.
  - PROBLEM, if signed into Google, the sheet displays but with a "
JavaScript isn't enabled in your browser, so this file can't be
opened. Enable and reload." message which prevents not just editing but
  scrolling the page.
  - doc permissions influence these results, ie an "edit" in the URL.
Not tested on Google app assets made public.
   3. File hosting:
  - Google Drive - no
  - OneDrive - unknown, not tested
  - Dropbox - unknown, not tested
   4. Some websites:
  - Will have to test the website if it will view in an iframe.
 - If the site/page has HTTP response header X-Frame-Option "DENY"
or "SAMEORIGIN", displaying in an iframe will not work unless the Wiki
is
 in the same domain.
 - sites using a javascript login (an URL ending in ".jspa"), a
"javascript not enabled" error message will appear instead of the
website
displaying– so apparently javascript has issues operating in iframes
 - When iframe viewing is prevented see Part B below.
  5. Youtube videos
  - "www.youtube.com/watch?_video ID_" won't view in iframe, but
  "www.youtube.com/embed/_video ID_" will.
 - Right click on a video at Youtbe and one of the options given is
an embed snippet which is an iframe with the video url
- often gives a "video unavailable" error message.
 6. direct viewing of web hosted multimedia content:
  - Images, audio, video files online can be the src of an iframe
  - or images, audio, video files online can be embedded into tiddlers
 - this is useful with archive org audio which brings up a web page
 hosting the audio file
 - (1) using TW's _canonical_uri: for the file url and setting the
tiddler type field ("audio/mp3" for audio)
 - (2) or using HTML audio and video tags in a tiddler
 - image hot-linking prevention on a website may block this
  - Text based files online can be the src of an iframe, any file that
your browser can display in it without needing an external app, can be
displayed in an iframe in its text format.

   - In these cases where content will not display within an iframe, the
content will have to be opened in a new browser tab using Wikitext external
link markup, due to iframe security precautions preventing viewing in an
   iframe.

B. *View in new browser window*:

(using Wikitext external link markup or html "a href" tag with
target="_blank")

   1. Google Doc's, Sheets, Drive & other Google app's
  - signed in or not- depends upon the share setting of the asset
   2. other file hosting - OneDrive, Dropbox
   3. many websites
  - sites/pages using HTTP response header X-Frame-Option "DENY" or
"SAMEORIGIN", displaying it in a new tab is the only way to view it.
  - sites/pages using javascriot log-in/front end (ie URL's ending in
".jspa", displaying it in a new tab is the only way to view it.
   4. Dropbox, others?
   5. Youtube videos can be opened in a new tab with Wikitext external link
markup using the standard "www.youtube.com/watch?_video ID_" in its url.
   6. Of course images, audio, video, text files online can be viewed using
   Wikitext external link markup.
  - Interesting experiment- Facebook won't display within an iframe but
setting the iframe src to an image on the Facebook page, the image will
  display wit
