If you use the HP Oscillator in your GPSDO, you can then use the
10 MHz output as an external reference for your counter.
I picked up a 10 MHz distribution amp and use the same GPSDO to
act as external reference on several instruments.

I have gathered everything I need to assemble a GPS
Disciplined Oscillator. I have the Brooks Shera
controller assembled, am about 99% done on the linear
power supplies for +/- 5V, 12V supplies and a separate
24V oven heater supply. The GPS Engine is purring away
happily with a good active antenna - spewing NMEA
data and 1pps to anything willing to listen to it.

The HP-10811 oven is sitting happily in a working
5328A counter that I'm willing to cannibalize, but do
I need to? Is there any reason why I shouldn't put the
controler in the 5328 case so I can use it as a
counter as well as timing source?

Look at the Z3815A and the E1938A on TVB's website and note the subtle
difference between the E1938A installed in the Z3815A which only has a
single DAC and the other E1938A which appears to have 2 DACs.

Which E1938A version do you have?

coupler that I could block / sink the 12V current.

I have a Symmetricom SmartSplitter, and I know that *should* do the job as
long as a lower numbered port is supplying power, but I really don't want to
take the accidental risk of sending 12V to my antenna.

Doing the math to sink 25ma of current would require a 480 ohm resistor...
That should make the receiver happy and think all is well. But that's as far
as my knowledge goes. What size capacitor would I need to use? Do I need to
add an inductor in series with the resistor?

[time-nuts] 5 MHz from 10 MHz

I have several 10 MHz sources that are locked to GPS. I just
acquired an HP 8640B that requires a 5 MHz reference input.
Other than building up something, are their any commercial
devices that will give me a 5 MHz output from a 10 MHz source ?

Thanks,

It just an RF bypass capacitor to ground.
This circuit was embedded in a very small section of a much larger
paper, so its difficult to find.
You may even have read the paper and not have noticed the mixer circuit.
The resistor from the centre tap to ground is selected so that the peak
drain current is around 28mA or so when the RF is applied

 RF input ~ 13dBm.
Input transformer 1:4 turns ratio (or thereabouts) centre tapped secondary.
Output transformer 2:1 turns ratio (or thereabouts).
RF bypass capacitor depends on input frequency typically 100nF or so.

 Hi Bruce,

 nice circuit. Many questions:

I wonder how well it works to get a 5MHz source up to 10MHz?

Also, would you have recommendations on the transformer part numbers?
(MiniCircuits, MaCom, etc)? I think the transformers are probably key to
 getting
good phase noise (preventing them from saturating, crosstalk, etc).

Do you have a suggestion on who makes the best (lowest-noise) JFets?

Where could we find the original paper's PDF?

Lastly, how much fundamental attenuation would you expect from such a
 circuit?

 Thanks!

Re: [time-nuts] another Ebay mixup

2007-06-09 Thread Dick, W1KSZ
The answer is simple ...
Packing = $$$, right off the bottom line.

Since most, if not all electronics on e-Pay is sold
as-is, the seller has no reason to be concerned with
the item arriving safely. Only his conscience, which,
sadly, in the case of most sellers is non-existent.

Don't blame the UPS Store, he only packs with the $$
the seller gives him.
