Re: [time-nuts] Personal time keeping...
Many radio stations had at least one Western Union clock that generated a tone at the top of the hour. The clock was designed so that it ran just a slight bit fast. As the top of the hour approached, the second hand would be held momentarily at 00 seconds, then when the signal came down the line from Western Union, the second hand was released and at the same time a relay was closed to produce the hour "tone." Good stuff... 73, Don, W4WJ In a message dated 5/19/2011 11:21:20 A.M. Central Daylight Time, m...@maxsmusicplace.com writes: Is anyone else old enough to remember when you would hear on the radio "Time at the tone, 5 o'clock. Beep." The tone was anywhere from half a second to one second long and it might have been hard to pin down if the beginning or the end of the tone was 5 o'clock but it was probably within a couple of seconds accuracy which was plenty good for setting your watch or the kitchen clock. Why don't you hear that now a days? Digital TV has latency which is dependant on the equipment used by the cable or satellite company and is somewhat variable between receiver manufacturers. The engineer of our local public radio station told me that digital radio has 7 seconds delay. When I asked the station manager if there were any plans to run studio time 7 seconds ahead of real time so listeners would get accurate time he just frowned. Regards. Max. K 4 O D S. Re: [time-nuts] What are these towers?
So here are some URL's to explain the pattern for KNTH... If you will note, there are two Texas stations that KNTH is protecting, since they are SENIOR on the frequency... Also, WAPI in Birmingham 50KW daytime non-directional is being protected in the ENE null. We could go on and on!! The first stations that must be protected are those ND (non-directionals) that are within several hundred miles of the Houston transmitter site. Also any directionals (DA) that do not have nulls towards Houston must be protected. Oh, 1060 and 1080 also have to be protected to a lesser extent!! ;-) _http://www.amlogbook.com/freq/freq.htm#1070_ (http://www.amlogbook.com/freq/freq.htm#1070) Here is the page to look at the day and night patterns of KNTH... Note that the patterns are essentially the same: _http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/finder?call=knth&sr=Y&s=C&x=16&y=6_ (http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/finder?call=knth&sr=Y&s=C&x=16&y=6) and the stations being protected... KOPY WSW of the KNTH transmitter site _http://www.radio-locator.com/info/KOPY-AM_ (http://www.radio-locator.com/info/KOPY-AM) Note that KOPY DOES NOT have a NULL towards KNTH either day or night... and note that non-directional KWEL is in the null off the back of the KNTH array. Bottom line here... someone wanted an AM station in Houston... After a lot of midnight oil, and a lot of station day and night pattern searches, it was calculated that a pattern could be created for 1070 in Houston using 9 or 11 towers!! AM antenna array black magic at work!! Oh... the AM rig is most likely GPS locked!! ;-) 73, Don, W4WJ In a message dated 5/20/2011 6:47:39 P.M. Re: [time-nuts] Time Signals on TV signals
Unfortunately "cesium passthru" went away with the advent of the use of frame synchronizers to receive the network signal and then re-clock it to match the local sync generator phase and frequency. The FCC requirement for the color burst signal (3.579545 MHz) is plus/minus 1 Hz... and you can certainly do better than that with most rudimentary oscillators. So, the phase stability of your local network affiliate is only as good as their local sync generator... Some stations do have sync generators with 10MHz EXT REF capability, allowing use of GPS or stabilized oscillators for that input... 73, Don, W4WJ In a message dated 5/25/2009 1:14:45 P.M. Central Daylight Time, hmur...@megapathdsl.net writes: > Why did TV stations stop broadcasting time signals? HDTV requirements? One thing that may be relevant Many years ago, all the TV sources were kept in sync so there wasn't any glitch when they switched feeds. The sync timing was distributed from at atomic clock at network headquarters. The time of day probably piggybacked on that. I remember an old NBS booklet describing it. That was back in the late 70s. (It's probably a valuable collectors item now.) I think HP and NBS used to publish a table of delays for several major TV stations. Somebody on this list will probably recognize that description. The breakthrough that got around the timing requirement was frame buffers. (Thank Moore's law.) > Could a cable company interfere with the time signals? I did not participate previously, so I have no experience with the test. If I understand correctly, they will transmit on all 3 frequencies simultaneously, but we are supposed to measure only the specific band they announce at a time? Since I only have a decent antenna for 80m, can I take advantage of all 3 transmit windows on 80m? The "official" readings are taken for the band that is announced. Even though the exciters at W1AW are left on for an extended period of time before the test, there is some drift during the test period. I would suggest that you listen on 160 and 40 meters during the callup to determine wether you have a shot on those bands or not. If you are going to submit in the tenths of Hz, I would suggest that you only measure during the announced time for that band. The object is to determine as accurately as possible the carrier frequency of a signal sent from W1AW on the 160m, 80m and 40m bands. There will also be a signal sent from the west coast on the 40m band. A lot of time nuts are hams. Who plans on participating?
