[time-nuts] Top Posting

2016-11-09 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
List,
There is always going to be some top posting however it has been six or seven
pages long multiple times lately.
I save all these on MS word for reference later.  How about shortening these at
least a little bit please?

Why is this extra repetition a problem when top-posting, but not a problem when bottom
posting

Exalted Listers,

Because of the high amount of useable technical information to me I copy each
month’s postings to a word file. I do this for two reasons. First is that
sub-dividing posts into different subject files is just too complicated.
Secondly net archived information relies on the goodwill of the provide r(s)
and is not guaranteed to be there when one might want/need it. I usually end
up with over 200 pages of condensed information.

My top posting complaint is not because of one earlier post at the bottom.
That is reference information. Typically, in the past, it was not uncommon to
see top posting of five or six previous posts. This would then fill up four or
five pages.

There might be two or three such top postings for each issue. Deleting all of
this extra repetition becomes a mighty PITA for someone like me who is still a
neophyte in this area of expertise and attempting to become better educated.

I thoroughly enjoy the sometimes mislabeled as OT adventures (and the
occasional mis-adventures). They provide both knowledgeable insight and a deep
appreciation of previous attempts toward technical excellence.

I’m very appreciative of the more pruned issues of late.

Perrier

The protocol behind bottom posting is to edit the prior text, so that you are
only incorporating, and responding to, the appropriate text.

Top posting on top of layers of previous posts is just lazy.

You guys should get out of the dark ages and use a modern mail client. Then
it won't matter!

I won't name names, but the one I use is popular, has a web front end, keeps
all of my mail around in a searchable format (no need to waste your time
generating a word doc), squashes out quoted fragments of the previous
messages (puts them behind a -Show Quoted Text- link), and rhymes with
female. It took me a while to figure out what you guys were even
complaining about :-)

[time-nuts] Top Posting Clarified - Hopefully

For what it is worth, I agree 100%. I have also been top posting for over 30
years.

A lot of times when I open a thread, and, do not see anything but previous
posts, I delete the whole thing. Why should I go all the way to the bottom
to see what someone may have said, or, to even see if there is something
there. Unfortunately, I probably miss out on some good info this way, but, I
do not have the patience to sort through it all. If I have been following
the threads then I know what has been said anyway. If I have not, the latest
top reply might peak my interest.

Another thing that really annoys me is when people comment inside of a
previous post, about every paragraph/sentence or so. Most of the time it is
difficult to tell what was the previous post and when the new response
begins.

Just put it all on top. Regards - Mike

Re: [time-nuts] Top Posting...

2011-05-23 Thread Jim Lux
Sometimes, though, interspersed responses are appropriate. For instance, if
you've got a long analysis or list of things, or a list of questions, then
answering interspersed is more appropriate. (with a note at the top saying
answers interspersed below)

Many mail clients facilitate the distinguishing of original and new text by
adding arrows, change bars, or colors, although some are really annoyingly bad
about this (e.g. the webmail client I'm using right now is truly horrible).
There's also the problem when the highlighting is done using HTML rendering or
which relies on some outside semantic interpretation.
