[time-nuts] one-off PC board

2010-08-12 Thread Dick Moore
I have a board layout that I need made, simple single-side, 2.3 x 6.5 inches.
Any suggestions on where I can get this made at a reasonable price? The mask
layout I have is a printout from a pdf document that has black where the traces
are and is full-size.

Others may be interested -- this is for Bob Cordell's state-variable
low-distortion oscillator (similar to a Tek SG505), which delivers THD around
3ppm in the audio mid-band, works from 10 or 20Hz up to 100 to 200kHz, with
generally very low distortion overall. A very nice inexpensive way to get great
amplitude stability and ultra low THD, with output up to 10VRMS... I built
this unit years ago, and now, after selling mine, I've discovered I'd like to
have one again.

Best,
Dick

www.barebonespcb.com is high quality, fast and cheap. Many board
houses offer a similar service. The caveat is that they all expect
Gerber files rather than PDF. You might be able to call and see if
they can take PDF as a special case. Otherwise try to dig up the CAD
files that were used to create the PDF, or recreate the layout in
Eagle, gEDA, PCB Artist etc and export as Gerber.
Or skip the professional board houses and find someone with an etch
tank who can help.

There's a guy in Berlin who offers such a service:
http://www.prodigy-pro.com/diy/index.php?topic=37108.0. He started
out mostly focusing on creating boards to repair/recreate older audio
equipment, but he's turned it into a general PCB service. He actually
prefers Illustrator, PDFs or even scans of boards over Gerber files.
He's a musician, and his language may be a bit flowery at times, but
there's nothing wrong with the quality of his work.

Note that he doesn't do solder masks (yet), but neither will anyone
else with an etch tank. This may or may not create leakage
susceptibility, depending on your circuit and whatever post-treatment
you give the board.

I don't think they can do anything with .PDFs, but if you can come up with
Gerbers, check out http://www.batchpcb.com . Great service on 2-layer
boards, somewhat slower on 4-layer boards since they take longer to
accumulate a full panel from other customers.
