[time-nuts] Re: 1 pps / Gerber files

2021-11-25 Thread Andrew Kalman
DaveM is absolutely right -- JLCPCB is crazy cheap (and great quality) for
small runs of PCBs, esp. in the default config (green soldermask PCBs,
simple HASL (leaded) finish, 0.062" thick, et.).

When I do PCBs I often choose alternate soldermask colors (there's a
madness to the method :-) ), and I pretty much always go with ENIG (gold
finish), to avoid any corrosion issues, etc. But that adds an easy
$20-$40/board.

If you want the absolute cheapest way to go, follow DaveM's instructions!
It's a great way for folks who are not yet experienced with PCBs to get
into handling PCBs, esp. if someone else is providing the Gerbers (the
source files for making the PCBs).

(At this point in my life I have designed around well over 500 PCBs).

2021-11-25 Thread DM
To all who are interested in Gerhard's boards;
If you just send a zip file of the Gerber files that Gerhard has provided to
JLCPCB, you can get 5 boards, including shipping to your address (I'm in the
USA; I can't say what shipping would be to other countries) for a grand total
of $5.90 USD. The board manufacturing cost is $2.00 for all 5 boards, shipping
is a measly $3.90. PCB build time is 1-2 days. Shipping is fast and reliable.
I've used DHL for previous orders, usually arriving within a week.
They accept Paypal for payment.

By ordering boards yourself, you get 5 boards, for less money than having to go
through a 3rd party, and avoiding USPO costs and delays.

Cheers,

It's worth noting that the HP5370A has a doubler on the reference
input. It will accept either 5 or 10 MHz, and in the case of 5 MHz, it
doubles.

It may not be as clean as what you need, but the full schematic is in
the service manual.

There is a reasonable chance that I could measure mine and see if it
comes close. Bear in mind that it converts to a square wave in order to
drive the counter, but also back to a sine wave for the reference
output.

Have fun,
Darren

2021-11-11 Thread Andy Talbot
You seem to have gone to extraordinary lengths to trap out each unwanted
product, yet the final spectrum shows only -50dBc products. That seems a
poor return for that effort in filter design.

I made a 5MHz doubler plus distribution for my HP5061. You can see the
design at http://g4jnt.com/10MHzDist.pdf The doubler is a full wave
rectifier and the filter a three section top capacitor coupled LC
resonator.I achieved better than -80dBc rejection of the 5MHz
fundamental and something like -75dB at 15MHz but this far down,
measurement is quite a challenge.

For most practical purposes these levels are more than adequate, but I do
sometimes directly multiply up to 10GHz or higher, using this 10MHz source
as the reference input to a PLL synthesizer. I think I've seen evidence
that even -80dBc at 5MHz can introduce spurii at this level of
multiplication, so really ought to be aiming at -100dBc - but that woul dbe
impossible to measure with any test equipment I have. Even seeing -80dBc
was a challenge.

Your receiver documentation should say whether it's the rising or

Some receivers, just to make things exciting, generate the pulse by
gating an internal clock, so at the nanosecond level, there's a
variation due to the internal clock not being synced with GPS, but free

seconds, which is what GPSDOs do).

A simple question you ask and it can lead you down such a rabbit hole
