Annette,
Part of the reason I did this was to find out how long it would take. The
answer: too long. I'd say between reading the article, sketching up some ideas
for graphics on a piece of paper, finding the clipart, then putting the whole
thing together using LineForm took about 6 hours.
The other reason I did this was to determine if there was any pedagogical value
in the exercise and I think there was. The experience is similar to any work
you do to teach others about an idea: you learn more about the topic as you try
to figure out how to communicate it to others. For example, there were a few
times during the drawing creation when I realized I had to go back and re-read
sections of the article i really didn't understand well enough the first time.
I think it would be a good experience for students to find out what they really
didn't understand the first time they read an article and to think about the
key ideas in more depth as they figure out what is the best way to represent
them in images.
The key issue is whether the amount of time needed to create the graphic is
worth what is learned. Tough one to answer. This was the first time I used
LineForm, so some time was lost just learning how to use the tool. Other tools
might have been just as good, such as Photoshop or Illustrator (but Illustrator
has more power than is needed and is a really complicated program). If a
student has some facility using a graphics program then it wouldn't take as
long.

Wow. How long did this one take you to make?
This would have taken me HOURS and I'm not at all convinced that students
will LEARN better :(
But it is impressive. Unfortunately this is an EXTREMELY minor part of
anything that I teach, so it's not very useful for me. I'd like to see some
on more salient things like obedience or conformity.

Subject: [tips] Psychology Research Infographic
I decided to try my hand at creating an infographic. InfoGraphics are really
not a new idea - just the act of translating data into an appealing visual,
but infographics have become all the rage in the twitterverse. I based
this infographic on two pieces of very interesting research:
Dunn, E. W., Gilbert D. T., Wilson T. D. (2011). If money doesn't make you
happy
then you probably aren't spending it right.. Journal of Consumer Psychology.
21(2), 115-125.
Van Boven, L., Gilovich, T. (2003). To do or to have: That is the question.
Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 85, 1193-1202.
Happy to get your feedback on this graphic. To create it I used a vector
drawing program called LineForm (Mac only), along with some clipart and a
little Photoshop hackery. Came out pretty good I think:

I'll put a link to download the PDF on this page later today.
Again, feel free to let me know if there are mistakes or areas lacking
clarity.
